A 5hip's History USS GRIDLE Y ICG-2 ll, the third man-of-war named for Captain Charles V. GRIDLEY, has a great reputation to uphold The name GRID'-FY IS noted both for Captain GRlDLEY's honor, bra very and devotion to duty and for the distinguished records of two previous ships which bore the name, The present GRIDLEYICC-21l. was commissioned May 25, 1963 at the Puget Sound Na val Shipyard Bremerton, Washington, and was assigned to the U. S. Pacific Fleet. In March 1964, GRIDLEY deployed to the Western Pacific as a unit ofthe U.S. Seventh Fleet, and was part of Task Group 77. 6 during the Gulf of Tonkin crisis in August of that year. She was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation for service in gupport of successful air strikes and counter attack operations against North Vietnamese torpedo boats and supporting facilities. As a unit of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, GRIDLE Y again deployed to the Western Pacific in 1965, 1966 and 1968 where she served in the South China Sea and the Tonkin Gulf. On July 22, 1968, GRIDLEY departed her homeport of Long Beach, California, bound for the Bath Iron Works Corporation, Bath, Maine, and decommissioning incident to undergoing an extensive anti-air warfare modernization conversion. During her shipyard period, GRIDLE Y was fitted with the Naval Tactical Data System INTDSI which provides rapid communications and information displays, enabling ship and force commanders to make decisions in countering hostile threats in today's highspeed warfare. After commissioning on January 17, 1970, GRIDLE Y returned to her homeport of Long Beach. California. From November .1970 to May 1971, GRIDLE Y again served in Japanese and Vietnamese waters. During 1972, GRIDLEY underwent a conversion to Navy Distilate Fuel and completed another successful deployment to the Western Pacific. In February of 1973, GRIDLE Y entered Hunter's Point Na val Shipyard San Francisco, California, for a complex overhaul. During this period she received an Anti-Missile Defense System and was outfitted with highly sophisticated electronic equipment to help her meet her continuing operational committments. GRIDLE Y sailed to her newhomeport, San Diego, California, in December of 1973. There she was outfitted with a closed circuit Shipboard Information, Training and Entertainment lSlTEl Television System. ln 1975, GRIDLE Y again deployed to the Western Pacific as a unit of the U. S. Seventh Fleet and Task Group 71.5 During this seven and one half month deployment, GRIDLE Y visited such foreign ports as the Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore and Western A ustralia. As well as providing air traffic control and on station support during Operation Frequent Wind the evacuation of persons from South Vietnam, GRIDLE Y also was on station as air traffic controller during the MA YA GUEZ incident off the coast of Cambodia Since her commissioning in 1963, GRIDLE Y has had a total of nine commanding officers who have carried on the famous Captain Charles V. ONORA Tl, USN Executive Officer 72 October 7974 - 78 July 7976 Commander Onorati was born i'n Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 8, 7939. After graduating from Tenafly High School in Tenafly, New Jersey, he attended the United States Naval Academy as a member of the Class ol 7967. Upon graduation in June, 7967 he was assignedto the USS CHARLES S. SPERRY KDD-6.971 for duty. Following a period of instruction at the Naval Submarine School in New London, Connecticut, he served on the USS REMORA lSS-4877, and USS STERLETKSS-3927. From 7.966 to 7953 he attended the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California where he earned a Master of Science Degree in Oceanography. He then reported to the USS WAHOO lSS-5657 for duty as Operations Officer and Na vigator. His following tour of duty was as Executive Officer of the USS DOLPHIN lA GSS-5557, the world's deepest diving submarine which was engaged in oceanographic and acoustic research operations. Commander Onorati then attended the Air Command and Start College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama where he gi.1du.ated in 7974, While there, he earned a Master ofArts o't-give in t'5'usiness Administration by attending night school at Auburn University, He then reported to the USS GRIDLEY iff?
