Dr. Chen was assigned to USS GRIDLEY fC G-21 I by Chapman College to teach three semesters of college mathematics falgebra, trigonometry and calculus, etc. j during the '76 WESTPAC Cruise. His previous experience saw him on the faculty of Wuhan University fhis alma mater, where he earned his B. S. degreej and Northwestern and has taught PA CE in WE S TPA C as well as in the Mediterranean and NorthAtlantic. He has also done years of industrial research, after-hour teaching, technical consulting and writing, covering such diverse subject matters as health, energy, space and electronics. Born in China, he came 10 the United States in 1948 on a temporary student visa to study ph ysical chemistry in the University of Oregon where he earned his M. S., and later in the University of Chicago where he earned his Ph.D., only to find himself permanently naturalized as a citizen of the United States. He now lives in Carlsbad California, with his wife Catherine and six children. He has traveled extensively in the United States. He likes to read, write, chat - and walk. .t at sly Ll-l

C. His purpose aboard GRIDLE Y was to provide training and assistance to ship's force personnel in the maintenance ol electronic equipment. Mr. Reed' s home is in the Angeles NationalForest north ol Los Angeles where he lives with his wife Genny and daughter Crystal, When not working, his favorite pastimes are golf sailing, tennis and chess
