from the Commanding Dfficer... 21 December 1976 Our return to San Diego on 21 December marked the termination of another highly successful WESTPAC deployment for the USS GRIDLEY and her crew. For many of us this constituted the second such deployment within a period of two years. This cruise book has been compiled to provide a tangible means of recalling old friends and faces, as well as the events which occurred, and the places that we visited during the past six months. On behalf of all GRIDLBY crewmembers, I would like to express our appreciation to the editorial staff and photographers who expended so much of their personal time and effort to produce this book. During the deployment we participated in several Seventh Fleet exercises and we served as a member of the MIDHAY Task Group CTG 77.41 throughout the Korean Augmentation operation in September - October l976. The number one goal of our Fleet Comnander is readiness - and I was particularly proud of GRIDLEY's ability to respond immediately when called upon during the Korean crisis. We paid port visits to Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong and the Philippines, and also stopped briefly in Guam and Hawaii during this cruise. Wherever we went, the men of GRIDLEY served as goodwill ambassadors for our nation and the Navy through their conduct and the hospitality which they displayed. The sh1p's success in fulfilling its mission on a deployment such as this is dependent upon a team effort. Each department is inter related with all of the others: each individual makes his personal contribution toward the departmental result. Every member of the GRIDLEY crew, whatever your future occupation, may look back upon this period with pride and know that you served your country well. That's what this book is all about. C. W. STREI I Captain, U. S. Navy Commanding Officer .y .,
