GRIDLEY, has a great reputation to uphold The name GRID'-FY IS noted both for Captain GRlDLEY's honor, bra very and devotion to duty and for the distinguished records of two previous ships which bore the name, The present GRIDLEYICC-21l. was commissioned May 25, 1963 at the Puget Sound Na val Shipyard Bremerton, Washington, and was assigned to the U. S. Pacific Fleet. In March 1964, GRIDLEY deployed to the Western Pacific as a unit ofthe U.S. Seventh Fleet, and was part of Task Group 77. 6 during the Gulf of Tonkin crisis in August of that year. She was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation for service in gupport of successful air strikes and counter attack operations against North Vietnamese torpedo boats and supporting facilities. As a unit of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, GRIDLE Y again deployed to the Western Pacific in 1965, 1966 and 1968 where she served in the South China Sea and the Tonkin Gulf. On July 22, 1968, GRIDLEY departed her homeport of Long Beach, California, bound for the Bath Iron Works Corporation, Bath, Maine, and decommissioning incident to undergoing an extensive anti-air warfare modernization conversion. During her shipyard period, GRIDLE Y was fitted with the Naval Tactical Data System INTDSI which provides rapid communications and information displays, enabling ship and force commanders to make decisions in countering hostile threats in today's highspeed warfare. After commissioning on January 17, 1970, GRIDLE Y returned to her homeport of Long Beach. California. From November .1970 to May 1971, GRIDLE Y again served in Japanese and Vietnamese waters. During 1972, GRIDLEY underwent a conversion to Navy Distilate Fuel and completed another successful deployment to the Western Pacific. In February of 1973, GRIDLE Y entered Hunter's Point Na val Shipyard San Francisco, California, for a complex overhaul. During this period she received an Anti-Missile Defense System and was outfitted with highly sophisticated electronic equipment to help her meet her continuing operational committments. GRIDLE Y sailed to her newhomeport, San Diego, California, in December of 1973. There she was outfitted with a closed circuit Shipboard Information, Training and Entertainment lSlTEl Television System. ln 1975, GRIDLE Y again deployed to the Western Pacific as a unit of the U. I from the Commanding Dfficer... 21 December 1976 Our return to San Diego on 21 December marked the termination of another highly successful WESTPAC deployment for the USS GRIDLEY and her crew. For many of us this constituted the second such deployment within a period of two years. This cruise book has been compiled to provide a tangible means of recalling old friends and faces, as well as the events which occurred, and the places that we visited during the past six months. On behalf of all GRIDLBY crewmembers, I would like to express our appreciation to the editorial staff and photographers who expended so much of their personal time and effort to produce this book. During the deployment we participated in several Seventh Fleet exercises and we served as a member of the MIDHAY Task Group CTG 77.41 throughout the Korean Augmentation operation in September - October l976. The number one goal of our Fleet Comnander is readiness - and I was particularly proud of GRIDLEY's ability to respond immediately when called upon during the Korean crisis. We paid port visits to Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong and the Philippines, and also stopped briefly in Guam and Hawaii during this cruise. Wherever we went, the men of GRIDLEY served as goodwill ambassadors for our nation and the Navy through their conduct and the hospitality which they displayed. The sh1p's success in fulfilling its mission on a deployment such as this is dependent upon a team effort. Each department is inter related with all of the others: each individual makes his personal contribution toward the departmental result. Every member of the GRIDLEY crew, whatever your future occupation, may look back upon this period with pride and know that you served your country well. That's what this book is all about. C. W. 'lynn J 'U' 5 July 1976 Almighty and everlasting God, in a simple and sincere way, we give thanks for our Country. It is unique that we should be alive to experience and celebrate her 200th birthday. O God, in your majesty and power, You permit nations to rise to great- ness and fall in disgrace. We openly acknowledge that we believe the United States of America to be the greatest country in the world. Its constitutional principles of Liberty and Justice for all are unparalled by any other Nation. The potential for the wellbeing of all its people is beyond measure. Yet, there are flaws in the fabric of greatness which covers us. Some, in government, institutions, industry, and society-at-large have been corrupted by greed, power, and prejudice, depriving many of justice and equality: exploiting the poor and underprivileged. These are weaknesses within, which is a far greater enemy than one from without. On this special day, at the dawn of her 3rd century, we face the test of whether this Nation can long endure, if we fail to mend the flaws. We, therefore, pray that You will forgive the sins of the Nation. Forgive us our sins, for we are the Nation. Wash us clean of the things which corrupt and do injustice to others. Enable us to care for one another, ns well as be cared forg to respect and be respectedg to love and be loved, in the highest meaning of these words. By so doing, we believe Amcrlcn can and will endure, and become, indeed, America the Beautiful, hccnuse we have done something to make her beautiful. Bless the crew on the CRIDLEY in our mission of representing the United States. Be with our families and loved ones at home. Bless the President and all those in governmental authority over us. Bless our Captain, and aid him in the heavy responsibility of co manding this ship. :in81lYv be the Cod of our history, of our heritage,-and of our future ope. Amen GARY v. LYONS LTJG. CHC. Therefore, with the ard of Chaplain Lyons, Petty Offrber O'Callahan and various volunteers, closed circuit television was brought to the crew by the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. The crew saw everything from Rhoda to Star Trek with movies and talk shows every night. And to keep the crew informed, news, weather and sports were aired after supper with news brought to us by teletype from the United S rates. A publisher had to be found, volunteers had to be solicited and a staff had to be assembled. Once areas of responsibility were assigned, the real job began, that of selling subscriptions, accounting for film, processed negatives and prints. The important job fell on the volunteers from the division who did an excellent job of seeing to it that their division was represented. We had over 5700 prints to choose from. As you can see, we had to elimi nate many, and when we came down to choosing the 300 plus pictures, the chore became even more difficult. Here you see the best of what was offered. Many individuals were involved in the finished product. I would like to thank the Division Representatives for their contributions. My Business Manager, Luis uPanamau Clark did an excellent job of account- ing for all the costs involved with the processing and printing of negatives and prints, and of the selling and accounting of funds in- volved with the subscription sales. Tony Burnett did a fine job of photo editing and coordination. Both men gave up many hours of free time, both at sea and in port, to rough out the cruise book. Both provided many hours of work with the walsworth Publishing Company staff in San Diego to ensure that the finished product would be the best we had to offer. I extend my thanks to the Commanding Officer, Executive Officers and to both the Recreation Council and Com ittee for their support. With- out their support this endeavor would not have been possible- I hope you will enjoy this cruise book for many years t0 CONG- l L.Iq?T O f J YNC USN , , - ' L If 5, f'fL,3'ii,'f . It is interesting to note how much effort has gone into the support of our mission and of the 380 men attached for a period of six months. Below is a small indication of what has occurred during the cruise. Administrative Division processed 75 personnel reporting for duty while 60 personnel were transferred. They reenlisted 5 personnel and promoted 45 personnel in rank or rate. The ship's office crew used 270,000 pieces of paper in the Xerox and Ditto machines to reproduce the ship's bills, instructions, notices, Plan of the Day, etc. The postal clerks received more than 13,442 pounds of mail and sent off approximately 6,494 pounds of mail. Over S165,000 worth of postal money orders were purchased and more than 84,500 was spent for postage stamps. ln our Supply Department the ship's bakers pulled out of the ovens 8,000 loaves of bread and cooked over 13 tons of beef, 8,870 gallons of milk was consumed as were 6,268 dozen eggs, 1,751 gallons of ice cream, 3,391 pounds of butter, 2,242 pounds of frankfurters and 5,018 pounds of hamburger. Total value of provisions consumed during the cruise was over S137,687.00. Our barbers provided 1,640 haircuts while our Disbursing Officer paid out S641,591.12 in wages. Our Ship's Servicemen washed over 29 tons of clothing using 1,650 pounds of detergent, 1,100 pounds of bleach and 100 pounds of starch. The ship's store sold over 67.811 sodas and over 3102208.25 in merchandise. The Engineers refined from sea water over 1,278,473 gallons of fresh water and expended over 3.916.367 gallons of fuel to steam over 36,556 nautical miles during the cruise giving us 121 days at sea and 62 days in port. The ship's boilers used over 1,675,800 gallons of feed water while steaming 3,582.2 hours during the cruise with the main engines turning 21,034,842 revolutions from San Diego thru WESTPAC and return to San Diego. Our Hospital Corpsmen saw over 1,000 patients and provided over 1,700 inoculations for everythin from Swine Flu to yellow fever. Communications Department personnel processed over 14,300 f'1C0mff19 m9SS09es and over 2,500 outgoing messages. Our Weapons Department personnel expended over 4,228 rounds of small arms ammunition for indoctrination in the use of hand held weapons and fired 463 rounds of 3 50 caliber munitions during general quarters exercises. Ship's force used 300 gallons of primer, and 1,128 gallons of paint, 275 gallons ofpaint thinner to keep the ship in the highest material condition possible while our Operations Department personnel detected and tracked on radar over 8,400 surface contacts. The U.S. Customs Department collected customs declarations indicating the crew had spent over S174,326.00 for personal items ranging from stereo equipment and athletic gear to motorcycles and chop sticks. DEDICATION A book is usually dedicated to an individual who has attained a degree of notoriety: in memory of someone, or to one who has made some significant contribution to society, or the publication of the book itself. This book is not dedicated to the memory of anyone, nor to any prominent personage. lt is dedicated, however, for a significant contribution. lt is dedicated to all the wives, children, families, and loved ones of the crew of GRIDLEY who have, to one degree or another, contributed to the success of WESTPAC '76. All the responsibilities of maintaining family relationships, and being supportive of each other and of the crew member you had on board helped the GRIDLEY, in part, do its job. For this contribution you are appreciated, and to you this Cruise Book is dedicated. l- r ww . --.,,.,,,g,v , .nu-ln, K'- +'1'!'-virirf'w'I'1 .
