Ake Scce 3 va Foreword A new and challenging educational institution, hereby known as Gretna Senior High School, became a reality this year. Gone are the shrill sounds and childish antics of the Eighth-and Ninth-graders; only the mature utterings of sophisticated upper-classmen remain in our hallowed halls. These are students whose desire for self-improvement and future esteem has compelled them to achievements that are exposed on the following pages of our chronicle. Witness, then, the results of our infant year as Gretna Senior High. He is happy and contented with his life and his job. Although both have given him problems. He can. make his students laugh out -loud Or he may make them want to cry. He is respected and needed and has been throughout his life. He is the impossible dream answered. Because of his hard work and patience We dedicate the 1970 Junction to JAMES L. McKEEVER. One of the largest graduating classes at Gretna Senior High School has a total of 248 members. 120 of these students have already completed applications for continuing their education next year either at colleges, business schools or some specific training. Two outstanding seniors. Steve Taylor and Carol Aylor, received letters of commenda- tion from the National Merit Scholarship Te@at. All seniors participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities, including music, sports, drama, and clubs. Seven of the se- nior girls led fans and underclassmen in cheers while fifteen of the senior boys played their best to secure victories for the Hawks. In basketball we had two senior girls lead- ing the Hens to victory and nine senior boys winning for the Hawks. For the first time the Senior class sponsored their Prom. It was held on May 15. Graduation will be the main event of our se- nior year. Each student is looking forward to receiving his diploma. The students participated in sports such as basketball, football, track, baseball, and cheerleading. For the first time GHS organized a group of JV cheer- leaders made up of sophomore girls. They were elected to cheer the JV basketball team on to victory. This team consisted of boys that are in the Sophomore Class. We are very proud of this team. The sophomores enjoy such subjects as band, biology, English, phys. ed., geome- try, and they can take a foreign language. 63 oe } j ‘ } FIRST ROW: H. Dalton; M. Bond; R. Jones; F. Putting Our Minds To Work ‘ , ‘ : Miss Douthat gives assignments to her Geometry class. Mathematics is the practical tool which plays . an important part in man's understanding and mastery of his environment. The Gretna High School Math Department endeavors to teach each student the mathematics necessary to develop him into a competent citizen. In math, math, students are encouraged to think and to develop creative ability. Each math course provides an opportunity for developing funda - mental skills and understanding the basic operations of math. Plane Geometry and Algebra III are taught by Mrs. Tyler and Miss Douthat. Trigonometry and Analysis are taught by Mrs. Tyler. This year the Math Department is using all new books. In all math courses an effort is made to re- late math to other subjects as well as life situations. All students are taught an under- standing of basic mathematical process and relationships. 74 I came, I saw, I conquered. The power of the slide rule. Algebra III seems to amuse many students. Art lends strength and beauty to everyday living wherever it is taught. This is es- pecially true here at Gretna where art courses help students use their imagination and knowledge in forming works of art. To make things that have form and beauty they put in many hours of hard work. Our teacher Mrs. King emphasizes the meaning of lines and colors as she teaches the students con- tour drawings, and the use of water colors, pastels, and oil paints. Studying hard, Boys?! !! It is the intent of the language arts program to promote the achievements by students of the following abilities, understandings, and attitudes: To develop a reading procedure that will provide healthy attitudes, high ideals, critical standards, and worthwhile goals as a background for living and adjusting to the work- day world. To develop a method of reading for understanding infor- mation, enjoyment and appreciation. To enable the student to express himself clearly, cor- rectly, and effectively in sentences, paragraphs, and composition. To train in correct spelling, punctuation, neatness, and legibility. To teach effective communication through speech which is logical, thoughtful, distinct, and fluent. To equip the student with skills and habits necessary for listening intelligently, critically, and responsively. To foster critical thinking, to glean from literature the basic tenets of freedom and dignity concomitant with the democratic civilization. To stimulate an awareness of the ethical and moral ideas which promote universal love, respect, and understanding. To supply the student with that measure of linguistic sophistication which facilitates appraisal of culture of any chosen group of people. Mrs. Anderson lectures to her English classes? We strive, in the homemaking program at Gretna High School, to make a large dent in the girls' preparation for living in an ever- changing society. We feel that regardless of what a student will become, or what her aspirations are, she will always need to know how to improve her methods of every day living. For this she will always have to do, whether alone or ina family. Home Economics is concerned with the applica - tion of knowledge and skills that will enable the girls to become very consumer oriented. Since we will be using goods and services the rest of our lives, every unit of work is geared to this end. Improved living habits, other than foods and clothing are stressed. We strive to make each student proficient in the homemaking arts and a contributing member of her home, school, and community. We work with the problems of every day living. New members are taken into the club during the second semester of their sophomore year and must maintain a 3.2 average to stay in the club for the remainder of their high school days. Members of the Beta Club receive the National Beta Journal, the official magazine of the Beta Clubs throughout the nation. This magazine has wonderful and exciting articles, poems, and strains of other Beta Clubs throughout the nation in their efforts to make their Clubs the best ever. This magazine's stories are enjoyed by everyone, and they tend to broaden the horizons of its readers. The Beta Club members sold candy as its money-making project for the year. The Beta's also sponsored, as they do each year, the White Christmas. They took up money, canned goods, clothing, and toys and gave all of these things to a needy family. As usual, the highlight of the Beta year is the annual Beta Convention. This year, the convention was held in Roanoke. Everyone seemed to have had a wonderful, exciting time. The rock hard defense once again was the trademark of the team, giving up only 85 points in ten games, to sport the best defense ever at Gretna. Their best game of the season was played on the Gretna field when the undefeated Governors of Nelson County invaded Hawk territory boasting a 6-0 record. The aroused Hawks played an outstanding game. In the final minutes, Mike Bond slanted off left tackle and rambled 48 yards to the twelve yard line. Three plays later Mike Felts booted a 20 yard field goal for the 3-0 victory with 33 seconds remaining. The Hawks closed out the season with a respectable 6-4 record. STRATFORD-ON-THE-MOON? It's not as far-fetched an idea as you might suppose Stratford College has added some new dimensions lately to its liberal arts program for young women -- new courses, new faculty, new buildings. . . and new ideas. Stratford believes that the full educational potential of its students may be extended by providing opportunities for study in environments specifically suited to their academic fields. Thus, Stratford's Abroad Programs cater to the lan- guages with Stratford-in-Italy, a summer program for study of the fine arts. And, for those interested in English literature and history, there is a Stratford-in- England summer study-tour. With new programs being added each year to Stratford's four-year curriculum, anything. . . anywhere... is possible. Come to Stratford and watch her grow. The Impossible Dream (The Quest) To dream the impossible dream, This is my quest, to follow that To fight the unbeatable foe, star, To bear with unbearable sorrow, No matter how hopeless, no matter To run where the brave dare not go. how far; To fight for the right without To right the unrightable wrong, question or pause, To love pure and chaste from afar, To be willing to march into hell To try when your arms are too weary, for a heavenly cause! To reach the unreachable star! And I know, if I'll only be true To this glorious quest, That my heart will lie peaceful and calm, , When I'm laid to my rest, And the world will be better for this; That one man scorned and covered with scars, Still strove with his last ounce of courage, To reach the unreachable stars. 176 SENIORS Allen, Robert Stephen 19 Anderson, Alene Beth 19 Andrews, Bonnie Jean 19 Andrews, Mae Belle 19 Aylor, Carol Marshall 19 Badgette, Doris Mae 19 Bailess, Larry Coleman 19 Bailess, Leonard Michael 19 Bailey, Patricia Lee 20 Bandy, Janice Marie 20 Barbour, Shirley Jean 20 Bennett, Leigh James 20 Bennett, Phillip Marshel 20 Berger, Betty Jean 20 Berger, Glenn Lee 20 Betterton, Clara Jane 20 Blackstock, Nelson Carroll 21 Blair, Alice Irene 21 Blair, Dale Thomas 21 Blair, Deborah Abbott 21 Blair, Richard Odell 21 Blanks, Jinny Frank 21 Blue, Janes Napoleon 21 Bowen, Werna Mae 21 Boyce, Deborah Doreen 22 Brown, Cynthia Ann 22 Brumfield, Andy Ray 22 Brumfield, Hilda Pickeral 22 Bryant, Mark Wayne 22 Burton, Connie Sue 22 Callands, Crownie Olean 22 Carr, James William 22 Carter, Janice Marie 23 Chumley, Linda Sue 23 Clark, Beverly Andrew 23 Clark, Caroline Gail 23 Clark, Nancy Faye 23 Clark, Tommie Luther 23 Clay, Carter Monroe 23 Clements, Edna Marie 23 Clements, Helen Rebecca 24 Coles, Bobby Earl 24 Cooke, Bobby George 24 Cooper, Tony Barnett 24 Cothran, Paula Dianne 24 Craft, Kenneth Gerald 24 Crawley, Carolyn Sue 24 Crawley, Karen Kelly 24 Crews, Amn Frances 25 Crews, Charolette Phillips 25 Crews, Dianne Arthur 25 Dalton, Emmett Gold 25 Dalton, Gail Aurelia 25 Dalton, Stanley Eugene 25 Davis, Aubrey Ray 25 Davis, Dennis Darnell 25 Davis, Leon James 26 Davis, Nancy Gail 26 Davis, William Thomas, Jr. 26 DeLappe, Deborah Jean 26 Dickerson, Cathline 26 Dixon, Anthony Tone 26 Dixon, Henry Carrington 26 Dixon, Hobert Harvey 26 Doss, Janie Katherine 27 Doss, Nell Frances 27 Doss, Randy Arnold 27 Dudley, Alton Ray 27 Eades, Shirley Mae 27 Eanes, Paul Elson 27 Eastham, Margaret Anne 27 Edwards, Margie Elizaveth 27 Edwards, Zachariah Westley 28 Elliott, Deborah Kay 28 Elliott, Lloyd Wayne 28 Epperson, Patsy Ann 28 Farmer, Benjamin William 28 Farmer, Max Auburn 28 Farmer, Ramsey Benjamin III 28 Farris, Ted Leonard 28 Felts, William Michael 29 Glenn, Aubrey Lee 29 Grastey, Ethel Juanita 29 Green, Jennifer Susan 29 Green, John Lucas 29 Gregory, Michael Wray 29 Hailey, Barbara Jean 29 Haley, Herman Lewis 29 Hall, Robert Bryant 30 Hall, William Henry 30 Hammock, Barbara Ann 30 Harper, Jo Ann 30 Hedrick, Mary Jolene 30 Henry, Ann 30 Hines, Laura Ruth 30 Hodges, Dennis Sims 30 Hodnett, Barbara Jane 31 Hogan, Linda Orie 31 Hubbard, Aubrey Dianne 31 Hubbard, Delma 31 Hubbard, Patricia Gayle 31 Hunt, Theressa Faye 31 Hunt, Valeria Buteen 31 Hutcherson, Rose Marie 31 Hutcherson, Tommy Calvin 32 Irby, Benny Washington 32 Irby, George Barney 49 Jackson, Phyllis Ann 32 Jacobs, Cynthia Gale 32 James, Rhonda Charlene 32 Jefferson, Anthony James 32 Jefferson, Betty Ann 32 Jefferson, Dwight Emerson 32 Jefferson, Vickie Adkins 33 Johnson, Belinda Gayle 33 Johnson, Danny Ray 33 Johnson, Dennie Warren 33 Johnson, Kathy Ellen 33 Kelly, Charles Edmond 33 Lanier.
