We are getting away from the idea that grammar is a Set of dusty, cut-and-dried rules, but instead we learn that it is a science. Language is the basis of all learning, therefore we need a thorough knowledge of it so that we may take our places with other educated people. Since language is the means of most human relationships, then literature is the col- lection of the best uses of language. In our literature classes the students have an op- portunity to become familiar with the many different kinds of literature and they also have an opportunity to read the best books by the best writers. Pat Shelton and Ava Lee Cocke are hardat work on an English report. Bill Mustain is trying to find a book for English. The French students are not only learning to write but to speak French this year. More stress is being put on vocabulary than has been done pre- viously. Beginning students use the first ten minutes of the class period for various forms of oral work. Second year students enjoy using the new modern language laboratory to improve their speech. At Christmas Monsieur Brinard from Belgium spoke on French customs. Monsieur Brinard is now associated with Chatham High School. Some of the activities of the French students this year include sending Christmas cards to the Faith Home and planning a French Banquet in the Spring. Danny Simpson, Tom Swanson, and Becky Pickeral are hard at work. French Students Have Lab Dianne Mayhew, Sherry Love, and Susan Rowland are taping French vocabulary. Carol Crowder seems to enjoy listening to a French recording. 20 When our school opened this year, our students had an opportunity to enroll in Latin, anew language for our school. The Latin classes this year are learning that Latin is far from being a dead language, that it still lives in literature, that it has shaped and will continue to shape the thoughts and speech of millions, Mrs. Angel says that in the Latin Department the objectives are: 1. To teach pupils that an elementary know- ledge of Latin will make them secure in their use of Englishand ensure them against many common errors. 2. Totrain pupils in accuracy, application, memory and reasoning which make for straight thinking. 3. To helppupils enjoy the fullness and the so- ciety andinterests of a cultured Roman people. The students in Latin are planning a spring as- sembly which will feature phases of Roman life. Dianne Mayhew, Patsy Dalton, Martha Dalton, Jimmy Nelson and Janet Keesee are having a panel discussion in Latin. Latin ls Not Dead Mrs. Angel and Phyllis Franklin admire the bullentin board while Jenny Payne seems to be taking a rest break. Judy Blair, Ray Sisk, and Gwen Ingram are looking at some research material for Latin. 21 Our science students this year are using new Jaboratories. The new labs and equipment help in- crease the students’ interests. Five science courses are offered at GHS this year: 8th Grade Science, General Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, In 8th Grade Science and General Science, students study our environment, Biology students study plant and animal life. In chemistry and physics students increase their scien- tific knowledge and get valuable training for future careers, Mr. McKeever listens to his 8th grade science class. Mike Short, Carol Younger, Johnny Johnson, Carl Simpson, Glen Crosby and A, C. Orrell dissect frogs in the biology lab, and Roger Newman perform a chemistry experiment. New Labs Increase Interest Miss Tyler demonstrates the changing seasons for her class, Jane Bowen, Mr. McKeever, and Tommy Johnsondiscuss a lab R. G. Rowland, Richard Fratzke, and Kenneth Dalton work in experiment, the chemistry lab. 23 Mr. Fowler points to some mountains for his social studies groups. Mr. Evans checks over some papers for history. Social Studies Department Offers An Interrelated Curriculum Carolyn Kelly and Steve Mann select a book for a research paper. The Social Studies Department at Gretna High School offers an organized and interrelated curri- culm of history, civics, and government. Eighth grade students begin their social studies program with U.S. History, a basic introduction to our coun- try's heritage. In Civics freshmen delve into the mechanics of local and state government. Sopho- mores obtain international scope of man's cultural and national development in their studies of world history. A more advanced U.S. History course is offered to juniors in preparation for the senior re- quirement of government, Members of Gretna High School's Math De- partment endeavor to show students the practi- cal, as well as the theoretical, side of mathe- matics. Aware of the dependence on a good mathematical background in today's modern world, the department this year introduced a series of new textbooks which present math studies to the student in a clear and concise method. Through an organized system of study, students become proficient in basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Mrs, Tyler's solid class studies a geometric figure. A Good Math Background Is Essential Mr. Johnson helps Richard Yeatts with an algebra problem. Mr. Musick shows Joe McKinney a math problem. 7s) Linda Kepley and Janice Oakes study their office practice Gloria Roberts, Betty Anthony, Joyce Roberts, and Ann Johnson books. receive help from Mrs, Hayes. Joyce Hudson and Gloria Roberts are busy typing. Students who take commercial courses in high school often secure jobs immediately after gradu- ation. Thesecourses also help students who plan to enter college because they can use the knowledge for their own personal use. Commercial courses taught at GHS this year are Typing I and II, bookkeeping, general business, and shorthand. All these courses are excellent training for secretarial jobs. The knowledge of bookkeeping and general business helps students learn to keep neat and accurate personal records. Students can use typing knowledge for such purposes as term papers and business letters, and shorthand may be used for note taking. Mrs. Pendergrass checks Marsha Bayliss’ typing. Commercial Courses Are Practical Brenda Dalton, Linda Arrington and Betty Dove are taking Mrs. Hayes helps Connie Creasy and Carolyn Shelton with shorthand. their bookkeeping. The Band practices during its class period. Action has been the by-word for the band this year. It has performed at football games, in the Christmas Parade in Chatham, and in the town festival in Gretna. A Christmas concert at GHS and a concert for the elementary stu- dents were held. The band also attended the Pittsylvania County Christmas Music Festival and the annual high school band day festivities at the Uni- versity of Virginia at Charlottesville. In January the band plans to attend the District VI Instrumental Music Festi- val. For March a spring concert is being planned. Mr. Swart, the new director, is pleased with the band's progress and is hoping for an evenlarger band next year. Band Has New Director Judith Anthony, Wayne Bailess, Raleigh Bennett, Garet Bosiger, Kenneth Clay, Bennie Dalton, Faye Dalton, Danny Emmett, Richard Fratzke, Ronnie Hagood, Dwight Ingram, Richard Mayhew, Ronnie Menesses, Bill Mustain, Earl Myers, Kieth Pendergrass, Robert Power, Richard Scruggs, Steve Scruggs, W. C. The girlsin Mrs. Mann's classes this year are enjoying the new modern equipment in the Home Ec. Department, Those taking Home Ec. study many phases of home living such as: selecting, pre paring, and serving family meals; selecting, caring for, and making clothes; managing the family income; im- proving housing and home furnishing; and contri- buting to happy family living. The girls have home projects which they must turn induring the year and alsoduring the summer, Bonnie Collins and Lillian Dalton, a couple of homemakers do housework. The students have more activity and work harder this year, but they find their work more pleasant. There is more in- terest andenthusiasm this year because the dress- ing rooms are better equipped with lockers and showers. This year there areclassrooms for special classes. Eighth Graders have first aid, freshmen have driver's education and sophomores have advanced health, Classes are grouped ac- cording to ages. Members of the Physical Education Depart- ment feel handicapped because it has no play area, but they hope to get one in the near future. Mean- while, the large gym is a benefit. The students spend 15 minutes of class period onexercise including laps andthe restof the period is spent in various organized activities. Students spend four tofive weeks on aSsingle activity and then they switch to others. Activities include relays, volleyball, basketball, marches, and others. On Fridays boys andgirls use the gym together for co- recreational activities. Physical fitness tests show that our students have above average scores. Patsy Tucker, Lois Farris and Ann Garby put bandages on Dinah Simpson, Elsie Haley, and Ann Rowland. Phys. Ed. Department Is Proud Of Facilities Mrs. Moon directs her Phy. Ed. girls in exercises. Mr. Moon lectures his boy's Health class. 32 Industrial arts, offering to the student an op- portunity to study phases of industrial growth, ma- chines, processes and occupations, is new in the curriculum at Gretna High School. The student's studies include work and experience in wood, elec- tricity, electronics and mechanical drawing. In industrial arts the student learns by doing. He plans, designs, and constructs his own projects. This enables the student to better select, judge and use products of today. Opportunities in industrial education are tre- mendous as can be seen by the fantastic industrial development that has occurred in the United States in recent years, Training in industrial arts prepares students for future jobs in such a society. Mr. Taylor lectures his Industrial Arts class. Opportunities in Industrial Arts are Tremendous A group of Industrial Arts boys inspect a machine. Glenn Bowling seems to be enjoying his work. 33 Mr. Culbertson watches some of the Agriculture students work, Vocational Agriculture as taught at Gretna High School makes a major contribution to the total school program inpreparing boys for careers in our largest industry, agriculture. A vocational agri- culture student gets training in the classrooms, in the shop, in the Future Farmer of America organi- zation developing leadership abilities, and on the job learning as he carries out a supervised farming program or a work experience program in an agri- culture industry such as feed manufacturing, man- aging a business serving the farmer, selling farm supplies and many others. In the classroom a boy studies the newest de- velopments in the field of agriculture both on and off the farm. Almost half ofa boy's time in school is spent in shop where he learns basic skills in the areas of electricity, general metal work, plumbing, sheet metal, woodwork, the principles of engine operation, and operation, care and maintenance of farm mach- inery. The supervised farming program and the work experience program are designed to let the student learn by doing. This department also sponsors several adult programs which gives many farmers an opportunity to receive further training and to keep up with the news in Agriculture. Vocational Agriculture Trains Students Kenneth Dalton works with wood in class. Mr. Culbertson lectures his classes. 34 INTRODUCING YOUR STUDENTS Serving the Senior class are Butch Cocke, treasurer; Karen dent; Joyce Hudson, S.C.A. representative; Ann Johnson, Holbert, president; Joyce Roberts, treasurer; Sammy reporter; and Peggy Smith, secretary.
