I 'M ,,,,,..-5 Meeting of the Board T4 Headed by Superintendent Harry Thompson the Gresham Union High School Board advises and directs the activities and expenditures of both Gresham and Centennial high schools. The board must make decisions that will insure maximum educa- tional opportunity to all the students of the district at the mini- mum price to the public. The educational standards set by these board members must meet traditional as well as contemporary demands. The task is difficult it not nearly impossible, but a board of hard-working individuals do their best to serve their community in this way. Frank BarTholomew DirecTor of Trans and Supplies HW s t f George Jelinek, counseling New and Old Faces Coming to us from the small coastal town of Astoria, Mr. Robert Parnell found himself among a much larger student body than he had previously known and was faced with many new decisions and tasks. But he distinguished himself through many wise decisions and was found to be an able leader. Another new face was that of Mr. George Jelinek, who became a highly valued member of the counseling staff. An interesting person, he .rticipated in a play during the school year which was produced by the Mt. Hood Community College. His ready smile won the hearts of many Gresham Students. Robert Parnell Principal Mrs, Kathryn Rutherford Mrs. Marion Fenwick Librarians Bernard Monnes, Dean of Boys, Mrs. Esther Jones, Dean of Girls Guide Gresham tudents Doug Vickery, Counseling, Athletic Director Mr. Bernard Monnes, Dean ot Boys, and Mrs. Esther Jones, Dean of Girls, were also faced with many difficult tasks again this year as they attempted to guide us and mold us into respected young adults. By working closely with each other and with the students they aided many and accomplished much. f-K Dahl BlauvelT, Senior Counselor as Counselors Prepare To Guide As a new year began The counselors aT Gresham High School goT ready for many new faces and new Tasks, Mr. Blauvelr, The Senior counselor had an especially busy year as he again worked Tirelessly To adequoTely prepare anorher class for graduation. The year was young yet and eagerness showed through in both students and faculty mem- bers. Classes were pensive as solutions were sought and the- ories developed. For the ath- letes, fall endeavors were nearly over, but their work would con- tinue to the very end. The faculty too still had tar to go in this year. And they immersed themselves in the project. Always in the classroom helping, they often took time away from their preparation to help others with spirited class presentations. The year 'I967 was coming along fine. Large- ness has brought on diversification and decen- tralization. The language department has gained the newest equipment. The choir, before this time deficient in boys, can have tenor and bass sec- tions that equal the girls'. Never before have there been so many boys to choose from on the football field. Possibly though, that which is the music and athletic departments' gains has pre- cipitated the loss of a long maintained attitude. Perhaps Gresham has traded the unanimity and individuality of its smaller days for all these things. vgwwdk Mrs. Marianne OH, French, in language lub. It is a PR book put together by a staff of 10 who give up sleep, grades, and reason for a student body of 1800, most of whom couldn't give a care it the thing lived or died- the latter of which they suspect. lt runs llimpsl on a budget ot 56,000 and only manages to get published after the staff puts in two or three nights without sleep. It is a 272 page book that gets almost no help from anyone, but more than its share of advice from experts in every cobweb-filled cranny in the school. lt is an attempt to capture in about two minutes of photographs one year of lunch- room food-tights lwhich no one wants to see printedl, tires in the trash cans lwhich no one wants to see printedl, and general classroom activity lwhich everyone wants to see printed-as they see itl. But in the final analysis it is history-skimpy, disorganized, arnateurish history of GUHS which will mean little more than paper on which to scribble hopeless drivel to a classmate in the tall, but in 20 years will be one of the most important books in someone's library. c,,r, sf ,Q , 'W5 'P9fFmH-V1 s-i- v's, L -f.::x4,fg4, ,,,. ., ,.., W, .,,,' 4,1-get M. Romans Gather for Annual Banquet The Latin Banquet, the highlight of a Latin student's course of study, was held in Gresham's cafeteria. lt was conducted in the usual manner: without silverware or chairs, and with students seated at low tables. The students selected Sandy Field and Dwight Fuiimoto to reign over the event as Empress and Emperor. Pontifex Maximus Jeff Morey offered incense to the gods before the dinner began. Each class presented a skit for entertainment, and awards were given for not only outstanding, but also memorable students. r .3 , Caesar watche . ww wvs.. 'sl ,,,. Vocal Music Director Richard Barbour Barbour Leaves GUHS After six years of dedicated service, the faculty and the student body will truly miss their fearless vocal music director. And fearless is the word to use when describing this man, for he endured frantic musicals, concert preparations, and long hours of stress and strife over performances and just the daily classroom routine. Respected for his determination, he is a man who would overcome daily obstacles by teaching others to overcome their problems. Surely the influence and knowledge he has passed on to his students will cause them to enjoy a fuller life of music. 132 L C-.. ..,, S , 2-2 z 'Qi Q -Q ' g tp. -- '..::'L7g-Q 979 ra .Ji Q: sf! 1 no f '5' v, JEL ' ', Q L .0 ' ' , K rl pg, -vi Q . Year Ends With Anxietg and Hesitancg Anti-climactic was the mood of the night as grad- uates realized the finality of four years of struggles and diversions. Anticipating an exciting evening, seniors found it not so somber to leave security and routine after all. Friends and familiar situations left behind would now give way to the new challenge of life as a college student, a career girl, a housewife, or a private first class Viet-Nam bound. Probably four of the best years of their lives now past, yet a bright hope for worthwhile achievements in the future. The last walk begins ,qvi f 'Q' 1 I-W Q , 2.
