Under the guid- ance of Mr. George Perry and Miss Leonora' Guinazzo, class advisors, the baby gophers elected the following officers: President4Bob Parsons, Vice President-Pat Kirkpa- rick, Secretary-Virginia Koon and Sergeant-at-Arms-Bob Esler. The freshman offi- cers performed the traditional trophy polishing under the helpful? guidance of the up- perclassmen. The Freshman class had a party and reception for the parents. They spon- sored the Hoop Hop in honor of the freshman basketball team and then the baby go- phers also had their freshman party, Cotton Capers. Guiding their sophomore classmates through the 1955-1956 year were: President-Pat Kirkpatrick, Vice President-Ken Landgraver, Secretary-Mary Hering and Sergeant- at-Arms-Mike Gillard. At the annual sophomore party, November Nocturne, Jackie Grouse and Mike Vawter were crowned King and Queen. Bonnie Bachelder was chosen Sophomore Princess of the Basketball Dance. Activities of the year included Spring Fantasy, the sophomore party, The Baby Gophers Ball in which the sophomores wel- comed the freshmen and finally the activities of the year were completed by serving for the Junior-Senior Prom and by decorating for Baccalaureate. When Miss Guinazzo left Gresham High School in the junior year, Mrs. Alberta Fog- doll became the class advisor with Mr. Perry. ln 1956-1957 the juniors elected their of- ficers: President-Mike Vawterg Vice. President-Dic,k'Ramsey, Secretary-Mary King and Sergeant-at-Arms-Bobbie Willoughby who led the juniors through a very success- ful year. In April the juniors staged The Boarding House Reach , a comedy, which starred Dave Cayton and Thad Henderson and which was successfully directed by Mr. Merle Frizell. The Junior-Senior Prom Underwater Serenade under the general chair- manship'of Mike Vawter was a big success. The Juniors also served at the Senior Ban- quet. During 1957-1958 as the leaders of the school, the seniors elected: President-Jerry McKittrick, Vice President-Mike Gillard, Secretary-Mary Hering and Sergeant-at- Arms-Skip Pringle. The senior play Far Her Che-i-lds Sake or Her First False Step was a tremendous success. It was a melodrama which featured oleos between acts and starred Terry Riddell as the villain and Beverly Bristow as the heroine. The play was directed by Mr. Merle Frizell. The latter part of the year seniors were occupied with preparations for the Senior Banquet, the Senior Party and Commencement. This was the busiest, best, and final year for the class of 1958 as they prepared for the climax- commencement exercises. With their eyes on the future, and their minds full of won- derful' and fond memories of happy experiences at Gresham Union High School, the class of 1958 ends its high school career. Many of the members were sent as delegates to various Student Government functions such as the three Region Ill 'Student Council Conferences, the State Student Council Workshop in Eugene, the POftlaI'td Area Junior Traffic Safety Council, and the Oregon Youth Code Conference. This year the Gresham Student Council sponsored an all day leadership workshop with David Douglas I-ligh School invited as guests. Reports from both schools said that it was both educational and enlighten- ing as to the way Student Government is run. For the third year the Gresham Student Council and the Central Catholic Student Council sponsored the trash clash. Once again the rivalry ran high but, alas, after being victorious for two years, Gresham's Gophers fell to the determined Central Rams. To end the school year, the Student Council and the National Honor Society sponsored a dance. Last Row' G Dowsett M Gillard G Stone P Akse R. Ramsey, J, Ellertsow, M Baird 2nd Row: G. Morgan, J. These fun nights present the students with the opportunity to spend a friendly social evening with classmates and alumni. A well planned agenda provides for a variety of entertainment: dancing, ping pong, volleyball, and basketball. Class parties give the students the opportunity of becoming better acquainted with the students in their own classes and offer an evening of games, dancing, entertainment, and, of course, refreshments. Class committees go aIl out to plan these affairs, and do so around such themes as Harvest Hoe- down and Satellite Stomp. The Gophers of Gresham had a hard time learning-the 'new 'methods of Coach Doug Vickery, until they had used them inicompetition play once. The Gophers were defeated 27-0 by the Fort Vancouver Trappers, ,at their first appearance-. After learning their new tactics, the Gophers came back to win over Oregon City, Parkrose and David Douglas-in shutout-gan1es,'The Gopher team was then struck by the plague lAsian Flul and fell into a deep dark pit. The Gophers tied 'a game-'with Central l3 all, and then lost to Milwaukie, Astoria and Beaverton. The Gophers then saw a speck of light and wound' up, their season' with a 7-7 tie with the Hillsboro Spartons. Before becoming varsity basketball coach, he was coach of varsity baseball. Gresham's Varsity Basketball team for the first time in a number of years ended up on the bottom of the league, winning 2 and losing I2 games, The reason was not that they were poor, it was because it was short in experience. There were four sophomores on the Varsity Squad, the tall man for Gresham was 6 tt. 2 in. Although Gresham was handicapped, they had a strong heart. High point man for Grasham was Dick Ramsey.
