S X' FOREWORD Within these pages burns the flame of cherised memories kindled and strength- ened by the activities of our high school days. We -not only walked down the same hall for tour years, We shared also the task ot our responsibilities. We worked on dances together, rooted at the games together. originated new ideas and clubs together and ultimated friend- ships more valuable than gold. The Munhinotu staff hopes to preserve these precious memories within the pages of this book. May you treasure them forever. 5 TO YOU Mr. Wynired Chilton DEDICATION We Dedicate the 1955 Munhinotu. TO YOU Whose Principles, Indelible, Remain in the Hearts of All Seniors, TO YOU Whose Friendly Smile and Heart of Gold Have Enlivened Our Golden Rule Days, TO YOU Whose Calm, Wise and Revered Leadership Has Remained Aloit in Our Thoughts. A new tradition was started When Gresham accepted Central Cath- olic's challenge to a 'lTrash Clash. This contest having the purpose of seeing which school could keep its premises the cleanest tor a cer- tain length of time. Gopherville proved to be the cleanest behind the ears. The council added a third classification to the student body elections, which was the intermediate offices. Skits were eliminated from the campaigns and extemporaneous speeches added in an effort to bring out the candidates' best qualifications. A grade requirement of 80 per cent was placed on the Rally Squad nominees and the candidates can have no failures in previous years. The Student Council also attended a Fall Student Council Conference at Forest Grove Where lim Sitzman led a discussion. They attended a Winter Conference at Iefferson High, and hosted a Spring Con- ference for about 40 schools in May. 57 GIRL'S LEAGUE 'gk Myrna Houghton, B. Gannon, P. Foreman, I. Thomas, I. Carole Stone brought home honors when she was elected vice-president at a Tri-County Girls' League Conference at Parkrose. ln March an All Freshman Talent Assembly was presented, which proved that Gresham's baby gophers had good and varied talent. This event was backed by the very active Freshman Council. Girls' League ended the '55 season With their formal lnstallation of Officers and serving at the Senior-Parent Reception. This year's Pep club was very successful in their attempts to carry out this plan. They sponsored skits in assemblies, and, after decorating goal posts and grandstands at all home football games, they would distribute themselves systematically in the stands to root for the Gophers. The Pep club held the first shoe dance in the new cafeteria, sponsored a Halloween party, a Christmas potluck dinner, had a canned food drive for the less fortunate, sold different items at home games, had a box social, and ended the year With an annual picnic. These activities were all carried through under the leadership of the president, Carole Brauer, the advisor, Mr. Ivan Gillam, the secre- tary, Carole Brown, and sergeant-at-arms, Richard Hanson. SENIOR CLASS PLAY Stage Door, directed by Miss Wini- fred Casterline, proved to be a real challenge for all those involved. The cast, consisting of 32, was one ot the largest ever arrayed on the Gopher- ville stage, The action was built around a group ot young hopeful actresses, and the many conflicting and h u m o r o u s events that can only occur in a girls' boarding house. The challenge was met by a very capable cast and di- rector, and the play was a tremen- dous success. The leading roles Were portrayed by Elin Hendricks, Pete Bank, and Iim Sitzrnan. The supporting roles were characterized by Carole Brown, De- Loris Narvasa, Helen Van Zyl, Iudi Thomas, Deanne Bauman, Pat Per- kins, Mary Rhude, Marilyn Moen, Annette Otis, AnnaBell Bees, Marg- aret Petferly, Marcia Heinzel, Gerry Crosby, Bob Dixon, Fred Vinton, Lyle Hughes, Chuck Spink, Tex McCas- land, lohn Dirkson, Barbara Fortune, Georgianna Birch, lean Markle, Ioan Hughes, Gwen Hughes, Phyl Sim- mons, Nancy Buchanan, Alan Beck- ley, Tom Dull, and Ted Crrimsted, PETE RANK KEITH BURGESS L.,, J V ' zgg??z,e I f L , 1nprf 5'TQ.w . Track 4 COACHES The '54-'55 coaching staff received a new look when three new coaches were added to mentor varsity squads. Two of these coaches, Mr. Brad Ecklund and Mr. Iirn Sunderland, were entirely new to Gresham. Mr. Ecklund took over varsity football after completing a career of playing professional football. Mr. Sunderland came to us from Hawaii, where he taught at a private school, and formed the first wrestling team. The third addition to the staff was Mr. Trostel Werth, algebra and consumer math teacher, who coached the tennis team. . 88 T1'OSl9l Weffh Bill 'Watkins lim Sunderland Varsity Tennis VCUSHY Track Wresuing Q I.V. Coach Brad Ecklund's first season with Gresham proved to be very suc- cessful. Although the l954 football team suffered two defeats, to Milwaukie and Beaverton, who each went to fthe state playoffs, the squad won six ball games and tied Corvallis who later in the season tied South Salem, the state co-champion. The 1954 football season held many thrilling moments for Gresham. Iack Stone, senior tackle, was selected to the state All-Star team. Stone and Don Laudenslager were selected to play for the Shrine All-Star team, and Bob Dixon was selected as first alternate to the Shrine team. However, the most thrilling moment of the l954 season was the night of October 30, 1954. The 1954 football squad will go down on record as the first Gresham varsity foot- ball team to defeat Central Catholic since the rivalry between the two schools began. Gresh.
