Settergren, Chairman W. W. Bill Masten Harvey L. Snyder Earl F. Vincent Alvin W. Gustafson Mrs. Rose Glasheen SCHOOL BOARD Responsibility for assuring Gresham High students of the best possible education within the scope of the school budget lies with the Board of Directors. Decisions regarding em- ployees, building improvement, curriculum, and general policy also are made by the Board with the aid of the ad- ministration. The Gresham High School Board consists of five mem- bers who are elected by voters of five different areas which comprise the union high school district. Elmer E. Settergren of Orient replaced Vic Sipe this year as chairman of the Board. William W. Bill Masten of Lynch District No. 28, Harvey L. Snyder of Powell Valley District No. 26, Earl F. Vincent of Gresham, and Alvin W. Gustafson of Damascus Union District No. 26 served as directors this year. These men, along with school clerk, Mrs. Rose Glasheen, deserve much credit for an important service rendered well for the school and community. Harvey Snyder, Mrs. Rose Glasheen, Chairman Elmer Setter gren, and Superintendent Harry Thompson look over the plot plan of the school grounds. HARRY THOMPSON Superintendent Harry Thompson has completed his first year at the mammoth task of being adminis- trator of Gresham Union High School. Moving up from his former job of athletic director and dean of boys, Mt. Thompson took the helm of Gresham High with 10 years of teaching experience behind him. He deals skillfully with the problems of public relations, crowded conditions, complicated class sched- ules, student complaints and faculty assignments. Under his guidance the student council has grown in responsibility and leadership. FRANK BARTHOLOMEW Assistant Superintendent Frank Bartholomew han- dles many of the unpleasant but necessary details of administration. He checks attendance, toutes and schedules the busses, supervises the cafeteria service, and takes care of a host of disciplinary details. For these jobs which have so great a responsibility and so little reward, Bart deserves the thanks of all- even the victims of his vigilance. MILDRED WHARTON Miss Mildred Wharton, our understanding and resourceful dean of girls, finds no dull moments around her office. Her busy days are filled with major and minor emergencies, conferences, and meetings with girls, committees, parents, teachers, and community leaders. The First Aid room and health services operate in conjunction with her office. She is also adviser to the Girls' League, the Usher Corps, and to the MUN- HINOTU. BERNARD MONNES Genial, crew-cut Bernard Bud Monnes spends his day dealing with boys, either as physical education in- structor and coach or as dean of boys. In this, his first year as dean, he advises the newly organized Boys' League and counsels with boys re- garding their individual problems. As coach, he works with varsity players in basket- ball and baseball, and assists in varsity football. The '53 basketball squad did great credit to his coaching. 1 i I I ! l W r w r MacLeod, james Miller, Nettie Monnes, Bernard Newhouse, Hazel Olson, Charles Ott, David Ott, Marianne Pepper, Grace Perry, George Poucher, Lucille Poucher, Robert Rice, Esther Richardson, Janette ACULT I F I E i V l l r P n K E STUDEN1 OFFICER! The council was headed by Bob Nelson, who also presided over the assemblies. Early in the year the council set up an assembly committee which planned the assembly schedule and Studentbody president Bob Nel- son looks on as Donna Gay Snider, student body secretary, reads the minutes in assembly. instituted competitive class assemblies. A winter carnival, under the chairmanship of Doug I-Iering, student body vice president, in late january was another major undertaking of the council. The various school clubs ran the carnival booths and the profits were divided between the clubs and the stu- dent body on a 20-80 per cent basis. The approval of the rally squads, chartering of the Ski Club, selection of the candidates for Argus editor, were among the accomplishments this year. The student council consists of eight class represen- tatives Ctwo elected from each classj, three members chosen from the student body at large, and the five student body officers. LEFT TO RIGHT Mrs R Glasheen Mrs N Weber B Collins J Hill Mrs J Cunningham OFFICE STAFF Hey, anyone found my chem book? Couldija make this announcement just before lunch? D'ya suppose you could give me a pink slip to get into class? How about chang- ing my class schedule for me? These are only a few of the questions and problems with which the hard working office staff is constantly bombarded. These obliging women, Mrs. Rose Glasheen, Mrs. Nella Weber, Mrs. Joyce Cunningham, Juanita Hill, and Bonnie Collins, serve as the go-between for students and adminis- tration, smoothing out the daily emergencies with both patience and efficiency. Under the leadership of Rich Lear, presi- dent, Syl johnson, vice-president, and Shirley Harrington, secretary, the class en- gaged in the traditional senior activities with unique flair and success. The presen- tation of the Senior Play, My Sister Ei- leen , starring Margaret Edyvean and Mary Lou Almond, was the late fall class project. Presently Commencement and Bac- calaureate exercises will climax four years at Gresham High School. Individually, many seniors brought distinction to the class during its last year. In the fall, Nancy Leake and Eva jo Knudson, Bob Ziemer and Jim Sweatt, Gresham's delegates to the Ameri- can-Legion-sponsored Girls' State and Boys' State, reported on their activities there. In janu- ary, Frances Brusenhan received the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award. Later in the year, David Grimsted was elected speaker of the House for the Hi-Y state youth legislature. He also served as vice-president of the state Inter- national Relations League. Generally considered the greatest honor to come to Gresham was the national presidency of the American junior Red Cross, which went to Eldon Erickson. Garnering honors in the field of science were J. Kemmer Pfund, who received honorable men- tion in the national Westinghouse Science con- test, Arthur Toyooka, who took a first place award in the state Student Science Exposition, and Bruce Bloomfield, who qualified for the SENIOR CLASS COUNCIL FRONT ROW-Rich Lear, president, Bob Ziemer, Student Council represen- tativeg Syl johnson, vice-president. Led by Presi- dent Ken Snyder, Secretary Pat Perkins, and Vice- President Chuck Dutton, the sophomores started their year with a lively Sophomore Party. Ap- proximately 20O classmen were present to wit- ness the crowning of Bill Masten and Gerry Crosby sophomore king and queen. Twirp Day, an innovation this year, was sponsored by the class in conjunction with the Print and Cord Dance. In April, the sophomores presented their assembly and concluded their activities in May by serving at the Junior-Senior Prom and decorating at Baccalaureate. Like the upperclassmen, some sophomores distinguished themselves this year. The one sophomore to receive national recognition was Gale Armstrong who shared silver honors with two Gresham seniors at the national FFA dairy show at Waterloo, Iowa. On the state level Anita Shellhart took fifth place in a baton-twirling contest. Sally Knox represented the sophomores as princess on the Basketball court. A total of seven boys played varsity football and basket- ball. Officers in addition to those mentioned above were Cliff Shelton, sergeant-at-armsg Gerry Crosby, Girls' League representative, Don Laud- enslager and Donna Clark, Student Council representatives. THE YEAR IN SPORTS From Coach Ray Segale's first booming call for football players last August through the gravel-voiced discipline of Coach Bud Monnes for basketball and baseball to the stern command of Coach Bill Watkinds out on the track, Gresham's '52-'53 sports program was thrilling, vigorous and most successful. This year brought many changes. Two new coaches were added to the well-rounded staff. A ski club under Mr. Eugene Goodrich and a golf team tutored by both Goodrich and Mr. Harold Weber were formed for the winter and spring sports enthusiasts. The fresh- men had their first baseball team and the boys' intra- mural program reached new heights with a muscle competition. Athletic Director Bud Monnes scheduled some of the best competition in the state and the Gophers won more than their share of games as they fought their way through the various sports. Spectators saw thrills and spills, joys and heartaches, victories and Central Catholic. The Segale-piloted Gophers came out second in foot- ball in the Valley-Coast league and the Monnes-men grabbed the league championship in basketball. Though the season at this point is still young, both the track and baseball squads hold high hopes of nabbing a district crown. From the spectator standpoint this was one of Gresham's best years. Capacity crowds flocked into Stapleton field and hundreds were turned away at some of the basketball games. The businessmen of Gresham showed up in force to back the teams all the way. They even chartered a bus to the Salem foot- ball game. Yes, this year in sports will be long-remembered. Spirit, performance and competition reached a new high. Now the seniors of '53 wish the coaches and their boys great things for '5-4. ALLAN THEDE-J. V. Basket- ball, J. V. Track, Ftosh Foot- ball. CHARLES HOSFORD-Assists ant J. V. At the state FFA convention Gresham received a first prize for its farm safety exhibit. Projects for this year included a camping trip to Suttle Lake and two radio broadcasts over KPOJ. Club members formally initiated the Sandy and Corbett chapters and entered, at vari- ous times, projects in the Multnomah County Fair, the State Fair, and the Pacific International Livestock Exposition. Gresham FFA officers at- tended the leadership conference at North Marion, Oregon. At the State Fair, a dairy judging team com- posed of Fred johnson, Duane Denning, and Gale Armstrong received a first place award. In October, this group traveled to Waterloo, Iowa, and entered national competition, where they won two silver emblems and three gold, silver and bronze medals. Also, in the line of individual accomplishment, Norman Strebin won a first prize in state competition for land and water management. Later in the year he was awarded a Union Pacific scholarship to Oregon State College.
