We have tried to present the school as it appears to everyone-the first-term freshmen, the graduating senior, the faculty, the school board and the public. Here are shown not only the big events which go down in the records but also those everyday scenes which to students will symbolize Gresham Union High School. MUNHINOTU STAFF FIRST ROW-D. Ware, M. Because she has stood by us and worked for us in accomplishing all that we have done, she will always occupy a prominent place ia our memories. l E. G. LARSON, Chairman SCHOOL BOARD The Board of Directors is the democratic foundation of Gresham High School. They are elected by the legal voters of the school district, to build, maintain, and operate the school. They are the people's voice in the management of the school, and they conscientiously work toward making the school one of the best. Gresham's School Board has five members coming from separate ele- mentary school districts, but who attempt, nevertheless, to represent the entire population served by the school. E. G. Larson, chairman of the group, is from Gresham, District No. 4. Other members are: W. W. Masten, Lynch, District No. 28, V. H. Sipe, Union, District No. 26, Clackamas County, E. E. Settergren, Orient, District ljointl No. 6, and Harvey Snyder, Powell Valley, District No. 26, Multnomah County. George W. Page is the clerk, appointed by the School Board and a resident of Gresham. The School Board decides on all matters of policy as well as handling the innumerable small details necessary to operate a school of Gresham's size. They authorize the spending of money for school expenses, plan the budget, hire employers, and okay all improvements in the school's building, curriculum and management. ' Much of Gresham's student body comes from non-high school districts, which complicates the duties of the School Board. They, nevertheless, work for the welfare of all the students of the school and resolve that all attending shall receive as good instruction as this school is able to afford. They okay the expenditure of student body funds, limit the nominees for student body officers from the petitions presented and decide on other matters pertaining to the welfare of the student body. This year they authorized the money to buy robes for the Choir and limited the nominees for '50-'Sl offices. The Student Council sits to guard the honor of Gresham Union High School, to determine policies with respect to student affairs and to supervise in the general way expenditures of money. This is done subject to faculty approval, and it is rare that the judgment of our student council members is questioned, or changes suggested in their decisions. The council initiates new activities, supervises old ones, perfects old practices and keeps alive worthwhile traditions. STUDENT COUNCIL SEATED-B. Rogers, G. Luarca, M. Hathaway, T. McWilliams, P. LAEL TILLSTROM, Secretary BOB HAYES, President LOUIS ELAM, Vice-President SENIOR CLASS HISTORY As a typically bewildered freshman class, the seniors entered Gresham high school in the fall of l946. Miss Hazel Newhouse was awarded the ambitious class to advise, I Their first meeting together was highlighted by the selection of these class officers: Ken Sipe, president, Carol Williams, vice-president, Janice Kesterson, secretary, Joanne Olson' and Carl Nelson, student council members, Jim Holcombe, sergeant-at-arms, and Joanne Chapman, Girls' League repre- sentative. ' The well remembered freshman party, the class trip to the beach and the traditional cleaning of the trophy case made that year significant. A little more self-assured, the class returned as sophomores, led by class president, Roy Bodine, vice-president, Norma Taylor, secretary, Betty Holland, sergeant-at-arms, Junior Walters, council members, Ken Sipe and Carol Williams, and Girls' League representative, Edna Mulkey. That year the now-traditional choice of a king and queen of the sophomore party was started. Bob Rounsefell and Pat McCullough reigned as king and queen of hearts of the Valentine party. The class made a trip to the beach that year also. Junior class officers were: president, Jim Thibodeau, vice-president, Howard Butzer, secretary, Barbara Bush, sergeant-at-arms, John Cronin, council members, Roy Bodine and Jean Hathaway, Girls League representative, Ruby Takashima. The lower halls were invaded that year by this class, who presented a successful production of the play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay , directed by Miss Marjorie Machen and Miss Newhouse. Theme of the junior-senior prom was ln a Chinese Temple Garden . lt was staged only after much hard work and preparation. As juniors they chose the class motto, Of a good beginning cometh a good end , which aptly describes the progress the class has made. The carnation was named class flower and rose and white became the class colors. The senior year, always the most interesting and eventful, was presided over by: president, Bob Hays, vice-president, Louis Elam, secretary, Lael Tillstrom, council members, Jim Thibodeau and Barbara Bush, sergeant-at-arms, Harvey Rutz, and Girls' League representative, Donna Lambert. The presentation of Life With Father was directed by Miss Janette Richardson and Miss Newhouse. This constituted another first , since the play was presented before the junior play in order not to interfere with graduation activities. The senior mothers' tea, senior skip day, held on a Monday for the first time, the banquet, whose theme was Rhapsody in Blue , the prom, baccalaureate and the graduation exercises were the outstanding events of the Year. I The class chose to revive the tradition of giving a gift to the school and presented a flagpole for the football field. I The mid-century class is leaving Gresham high school this year, but the traditions they have helped maintain, the friendships they have cultivated and the memories they cherish will not be gone. The job of compiling and preparing news and features fell to the writing staffflunder the editorship of Ruby Takashima, assisted by associate editor Don Dederick. iNews editor for the first of the year was Jerry Dick, but Carol Wood took over thegi latter part of the year. Feature editor was Patsy Pfeifer, while Don Gaines handled the sports page. I The editorial board was created to determine the policy of the Argus on cdntro- versial school and community issues. They meet periodically to stimulate interest in these issues. A Another important group of the Argus family was the Personality of the Week Committeejcommonly referred to as the P.O.W. Committee . This group, composed of one representative from each club and department of the schodlfmet to choose the person who was to be personality of the week . This honor is awarded to someone who had done something worth while for the school in the field of activities but had received little recognition for it. One of the most hard working groups in the school was the Argus business staff, who supported SO per cent of the cost of the paper through their ad-soliciting efforts. Business manager was Eunice Park. Miss Janette Richardson advised the group. I Pins were awarded Argus writers and business staff workers on the basis of their service to the paper.
