' ' . : S 4 ' 1' ' S D' ' ' ' NK ff my 5 'ff fn FOOTBALL 1950 Midway through the month of August, 1950, football practice sessions were begun by Greenwood High Blue1ays Approximately L0 boys, 12 of whom were returning lettermen, reported for the drills In the opening game of the new season, the Jays met Houston on the home field The highly rated Houston eleven finally yielded and the Jays left the mud laden field with a 20 6 victory After a week of rest the Bluegays Journeyed to Ava With the team as a whole playing exceptionally well, they recorded a 32 7 triumph Now, having knocked over two big teams the Jays were called the Hlittle iron men.N Next on the schedule was a home game with Walnut Grove In this game, also played in the mud the Jays' line held their opponents to a minus 6 yards The Jays piled up 21 points, making a final score of 21 O for win number 3 The following week, Jopl1n's HBH team came to Springfield for a night game with the Jays After trailing 6 7 at half time, the Bluejays rallied The Jays'next game was at the SHS Stadium w1th Spr1ngf1e1d's Bullpups Halfback George Hackney scored three touchdowns as the Jays won the game, 20 O This was the first time in 2h years that the teams have met Once again the rivalry with Bolivar was renewed as the Jays played on the Tigers' field Unaffected by the bitter cold and aided by two Bolivar fumbles, the Jays annexed a 32 7 win One week later the Bluegays played at Cassville Trailing O 6 at half time, the reguvenated Bluegays started the last half with a spurt that netted them a well earned 21 o victory The season's finale was played against Sarcoxie on the home field Exploding for three touchdowns in the first quarter, the Jays marched on to win number 8, L7 7 This was the third time that Greenwood has had an undefeated and untied football team, but it was the first time they were able to sport 19 consecutive wins which were compiled over a period of 3 seasons These boys received letters and gold footballs SENIORS Harry Baker, Bob Brown, George Hackney, Dick Houk, Jim Moon, Eddie Nonweiler, Richard Thompson, JUNIORS Terry Brown, David Fay, Jim King, Wayne Niederhuth, John Smith, Stephen Thomas, SOPHOMORES-Maynard Ginsburg, Ronnie McCormick, A J ' .
