FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA Future Homemakers of America is the national organization of students from forty-five states, Puerto Rico and Hawaii, who study homemaking in Junior and senior high schools. We work together for better and happier home life for every one. We think that helping to make happy homes now and in the future, is the most im- portant thing youth can do in a democracy. Iouisiana's Home Economics clubs were known as Junior Home- makers, the organization developed into one of the strongest in the nation. In fact, for a period of years, Louisiana had the honor of having the largest membership in America. Our organization was known as Junior Homemakers until June, 1945. That year Louisiana's Junior Homemakers clubs accepted the name Future Homemakers of America. The emblem of the Future Homemakers of America is octagonal in shape and bears the name of the organization, Future Homemakers of America around the top of the plane, while around the lower Efde of It is the motto, 'Toward New Horizons.' 'In the center, there is a house supported by two hands which symbolizes that the homes of America are in the hands of its youth. The colors, red and white, are symbolic of youth, our flower, red rose is symbolic of vibrant, glowing health, a necessary attri- bute for happiness and efficiency in home and group life. Our motto 'Toward New Horizons' expresses the purpose of the organization--learning to live better today in order that our lives and those of our families may be better tomorrow. The Greenwood Chapter has been on the Standard of Excellence for ten years. Our chapter sent Martha McCluney to Kansas City, Missouri last July to represent us there at the National Convention. Soem of the Greenwood Chapter's projects for the past few years are: Remodeled bedroom and sick room, made curtains for Recreation Room and helped prepare the lounge for the teachers. Betty V. Brooks served as North Louisiana District F.H.A. secretary. Three girls of our chapter served as officers of the Caddo F.H.A. They were Martha McCluney, President, Betty V. Brooks, Secretary, Helen Williams, Treasurer. Frances Haggard will serve as President and Elsie Meyer will serve as Vice-President of the Caddo F.H.A. for 1949-50. Our local officers are Martha McCluney, President, Betty Bryson, Vice-President, Frances Haggard, Secre- tary, Elsie Meyer, Treasurer, Betty Jo Cobb, Parliamentarian, Betty V. Brooks, Program Chairman and Wanda Hines, Reporter. Our first Chapter Mother is Mrs. Tom Bryson. The Greenwood Chapter'has made great progress for the last few years under the wise leadership of our advisor, Mrs. Ethel Spencer, and we hope to make further progress 'Toward New Hor1zons.'
