It ran from Cfrcenville t Cfolumhia. ln 1857 the town received its first charter from tht State of South Carolina. ln 1858 the f'rst church was built. It was a Methodist Church and stood in front of the old ccmeterx on Church Street. ln 1887 the first ttxtile plant was orcranifcd hx local citiyens. It opemd in 1891. The earliest records of Greenwood lligh School 'arc from tlae school vcar of 1918-1919. The school was at Magnolia School. There w erc 233 pupils 'and 9 teachers. The high school uscd 14 of the 22 classrooms. The present building w as first opened in 1926. There werc 455 pupils and 18 teachers. 11 1928 tht total enrollmtnt reached 500 f the first time. ln 1930 thc gxm building was added. ln 1938 the total cnrollf ment reached 1 OOO. In 1947-48 the vocational buildinu was added. ln 1957 not onlv has Cwrecnwood outgrown its schools but also it has enlarged its citv linaits to talce carc of the evcreincrcasing population.
