Q 6 All this was accomplished under the reign of John Zuccerella President Barbara Carpenter Veep Dot Zygmont Secretary and Nancy Walker Treasurer The Leap Year Dance was a sudden and successful climax of the winter season thanks to Ruth Gisborne who was the recipient of the divine inspiration Sora Sibley and Ro Chcappetta governed the dance It was gurls nnvutatlon course and held February I5 Weather for the class plcmc was nlce enough for swimming fvoluntary or otherwise mostly otherwlset A Game committee was supposed to thunk up interesting diversions but the boys reverted to the tradltlonal practices of throwlng Ice down necks and dunklng By this time we had more money an the bank than the Seniors did We were known as the moneyed class the predatory filthy rlch And what do we see lurlung in the shadows but a slight but of common sense coming to the Class of 537 My my' The operetta The Gondolners claimed many classmates Bill Murray and Charlie Mangold had leading roles The audience almost burst a seam The peasant costumes Introduced a new fad to G H S cnnollnes Thus operetta also had an aftermath leave us say no more Dedicated to those who remember The be all and end all of our Junior year was the Junior Porm In this we have several firsts to our credit We were the first class ever to break even financially on a Junior Prom the first to serve punch and the first almost not to have any decorations because the artificial flowers werent nf9Pf00f Uhonks to The undaunted spirit of committee members this calamity was averted we sprayed emlj The theme Aprll In Pans was carried out despite thus almost Loulse Murphy and Nancy Walker were responsible for the sheet behind the bandstand bearing the notes and words of April In Pans Helena Moralo was head of the Dance And so with the end all of our Junior year our Junior year ended Back to the brick walls steep novel Idea of having a huge muslc stalrs legendary lunches a new green lawn but the famlllar bulldlng with the hole tn the mlddle for the last time We were Sensors Amateur pole vaultmg over buckets of green paint skidding on canvas ducking scaffolds gaping at the flamboyant green cafeteria we were Seniors First on the agenda was election of officers Milton Wallace was elected President Ben Bronsdon Vice President Ro Chlappetta Secretary and Herman Glass Treasurer We cannot omlt summer vacation from our nostalgic recollections Marcelle Yale was crowned Mlss Byram Barbara Jensen was a finalist nn the Miss Surfmotd contest and The Pirates of Penzance was put on an Old Greenwich Tarantara' chlldnshness to chlldtshness If you must but sober sensitive and conscious of the part we play ln the world No longer are we the madcap Juniors we re the horned hurried worried fbut somehow happyj Seniors We discovered to our dlsmay that Macbeth was sensa lonal scurrled thither quoting Wlllle S like mad brandishing cafeteria knives and crying ls this a dagger Part of the class lolned the French Club under the assumption that cognac was Involved Senior gurls sent out an Immediate SOS to all the nearby prep schools when they reviewed the mon situation They also developed mad crushes on the new football coach Once we used to pray for the football team now all our spiritual efforts were dedicated to Registrars A new and vastly different comprehension of what Senior year IS really like Cwork work and more workl dawned on us as we Iuggled supersaturated activity periods Eddie Rowe was tndlspenslble on the football field along with Milton Wallace and Harvey Lambert Naturally we had a Sadie Hawkins Dance Only some parts of ut werent natural' The guests of honor were two plglets freall introduced by Bull Kelly armed with a bottle of alr wick Helena Moralo was chosen chairman of the dance Oscillating from the net overhead were some 250 shmoos one for each couple Garnnshlng the mlddle of the dance floor was an empty PJ stlll real Dogpatch style The scenlc wonder was the outhouse borrowed from Tod s Pomt complete even to Lll Abners crescents hanging from the door Dress was seml formal not quite an keeping with the rustic embelllshments Many classmates were making such a name for themselves they were becoming permanent fixtures around the school Duck Blllm was President of the GO Carmelo Guerrlerl President of Hospltallty Club for the second year Renae Healey Jeanne Urell and Patncxa Mullan editing the tabloid THE WITCHES BREW KBIII Kelly writing the space between the lines for samei Nancy Walker President of the Youth Council Frank Sauter winner of the I Speak for Democracy contest the officers of the Key Club cheerleaders Nancy Erickson Frances Maduru Frances Toomy etc rallying the fans all the nllustrlous characters on the COMPASS Finally the people who made the Senior Vaudevllle one of the bed G H S had ever known Bull Kelly Chairman Sonny Genlse as the Maharalah the Intermission chorus lane and scads of other noteworthy sluts and gimmicks June was fast arrlvlng Suddenly there were finals caps and gowns paying Freshman Dues and the mevltable Senior Prom Signing yearbooks on someone s knobby knee pens running dry Then the last malsle up the aisle of He runs G.H.S. with tact and efficiency but he always has time to hear our little troubles and dissolve our difficulties. He II stick up for our rights when they re threatened- he was the one who insisted that we have a Compass Dance. As a token of our esteem and respect for Mr. Bella the yearbook staff leaves this page our tribute to a faithful friend. 'I06 IN APPRECIATICDN Anyone who has ever worked with Mr. Aurell knows what a wonderful teacher and a fine man he is. The Compass stat? are wont to consider him our own personal friend and advisor, forgetting all the help he has given to the school in general. He has not only started the artistic part of our minds working, but he has also lent his room, materials, and experience for dance decorations and show preparations. The Compass staft bothered him for endless advice, and, whether it was page layout, an elusive word, or a matter of diplomatic intervention with the authorities, we always received a good suggestion. He appreciated our good work, showed us how to improve the not-so-good. Always ready to stick up for us, he was one of the few teachers to trust those students who are trust- worthy. We are truly sorry to leave so loyal a freind-in-need as Mr. Randolph Aurell. Thanks for everything! 'I07 M n of dISfIl1CfIOI'1 I' 108 '-N Come up and see me some :me v..
