'fii .15 ,,,,- Ya- ing two touchdowns. Then the home team roared back in the second half to score two touchdowns of their own. Greenwich won the game in the final sec- onds when sophomore Art MacKail knocked down a Norwalk pass attempt for the extra point. Bassick, rated as one of the weaker teams, proved a tough nut for the Cardinals to crack when they re- turned home a week later. This Bridgeport team fea- tured wide-open plays and a confusing offense to assist their weak line. Soon, however, the Greenwich squad took the upperhand and forged ahead to win. Against Port Chester, at their field, G.H.S. played one of its best games of the season. Working as a well coordinated unit, they trounced the New York team, holding them scoreless and pushing over three touch- downs. The star of the game was fleet George O'Brien, who raced 88 yards to score the flashiest touchdown of the season. The following Saturday a strong Fairfield Prep team visited Havemeyer Field and showed the Cardinals a tough brand of football. Their speedy halfbacks seemed to be unstoppable and their power plays and tricky offense gave the G.H.S. line a tough time. The well rounded Fairfield squad had run the score up to 26-14 when the final gun sounded. Although defeated by Fairfield, G.H.S. was still in the Hght for the State Title. We had our chance against Bridgeport Central, the final champs, and gave them a real battle. After a nip and tuck game, the Central team was only ahead by one touchdown. The Greenwich team gave the class of the league a real fight and showed that we had fine spirit. Now the Witch team was ready for its biggest game of the season, the finale with our old rival Stamford. The pre-game estimates called this the most even game of the present-day series and the contest actually was decided by the breaks. The Orange and Black received the kick-off and started strongly, driving to the Green- wich 32 where they lost the ball on downs. The Cardinals were soon forced to kick and got their first break when Hal Bouton pounced on a Stamford fum- ble. Charley Chiappetta then scored standing up, after weaving 23 yards through the home team secondary. A placement by Luvara gave Greenwich a 7-0 lead. Stamford lost the ball on downs after receiving the kick-off, but soon intercepted an Abbot pass and began to roll. They couldn't be stopped and Cullinan scored to make the score read 7-6. The Orange and Black soon scored again when end Saunders out ran the Cardinal defense, took an aerial from Q. B. Prince, and scored standing up. As the half ended, Stamford was ahead by 12-7 after missing both conversions. Greenwich kicked off to start the second half, and on an exchange of punts neither team made any pro- gress. Then Pastoli of Stamford, on the first play from scrimmage, broke away for the fiashiest play of the game dashing forty-eight yards behind perfect inter- ference for the touchdown. The Big Red team, not discouraged, fought back sixty-five yards on twelve plays and scored to put themselves back in the ball game. Abbott finally plowed across on a quarter-back sneak and this made the score board read 18-14. With the score this close, the Greenwich stands, although hoping for a break, were disappointed when Stamford intercepted a pass. The home team, taking advantage of the chance, then turned in another T.D. to put the game on ice. The 5,500 fans were thrilled when the Cardinals twice held the Orange and Black aggregation at the goal line, and kept them from scoring. The post-season decision to end the present-day series with Stamford came as a surprise to the many fans and students who enjoyed these contests. They did an outstanding job supporting the Big Red at every game and keeping up the spirit whether they were winning or not. They were on the job-rain or shine. Several of the girls attended the Cheerleaders' Clinic at Bridgeport University, where they represented our school. With eleven new girls on the squad and several new original cheers, the cheerleaders had a very good season. Greenwich High will long remember this spirited and enthusiastic group under the leadership of Miss Boles and cap- tained by Peggy Mann. 151' Q 'I7 5 'N-.ua -sf if Row 1: R. Wong, R. Lockwood, P. SOCCE With the beginning of a new school year, the soccer team, represented by a fresh group of 'green' boys, took to the field under the combined efforts of Mr. Wood- vine and Coach Gustafson in the hope of a fruitful season. The few returning veterans, however, were hardly enough to spearhead their inexperienced team- mates to a successful season in this tough sport. The Redmen were sparked by the undying efforts of C. Boyle CManagerD. In spite of the results, the scores of the games are ample proof that the margin of defeat was not decisive. The success of the soccer team can be counted on in the future if the response of its present aspirants is used as evidence. Their eagerness and competitive spirit will open a path for victorious teams in years to come. Paced by that fleet senior, Ray Chickanis, who cracked the course records at Bruce Park, Norwalk, and Fairfield, the team had a fine year. Besides achieving a perfect slate for the season, they placed first in the County Meet and third in the State Meet. Usually finishing close behind Chickanis, who copped first in all regular season meets, were seniors E. Fox, B. Mead, J. McGrath, G. Brother- ton, and F. Marr. The squad made a good showing at the State Championship Meet, placing third, with Chickanis finishing fifth, and Fox coming in eleventh. The many hours of practice on the two and one half- mile course at Bruce Park under Coach Gustafson certainly paid big dividends. They were defeated only by the Yale Freshmen, one of the best college teams in the country. With Ray Chickanis holding down the div- ing and Koehlert taking all the firsts in the 50 and 100 yard free-style, the G.H.S. team proved too much for their opponents. The team was also strengthened by many promising under classmen. Although they were not chosen as state champions, they captured more points than any school in the state meet at Yale, and also won fourth place in the New England Cham- pion ships, the only school in Connecticut to place. Excellently coached by Mr. Covino, all the boys turned in fine records throughout a difficult season. 20 iv Greenwxch Greenwnch Greenwxch Greenwlch Greenwmh ,l wvf' SCORES Greenwlch Greenwlch Greenwxch Greenwxch Greenwxch ' .... 42 ' ...................... 24 ' ' .... 4 1 ' ...........,........ 34 ' ' .... 2 5 . ............. 50 ' Greenwich .... 58 ............................. 17 Greenwich ' .... 49 ' .......... 26 ' ' .... 49 .......................... 26 ' 21 Row l, left to right: V. BASKETBALL The success of this year's basketball squad cannot be seen in the lifeless figures of the score book, for our team has done a valiant job reaching above its tower- ing opponents. Fighting against overpowering height in almost every instance, the boys, spirited by Captain V. Fiorito, have done themselves credit on all counts. The school turned out in force to pack the gym at all home games, and cheer Giansello on to break the individual scoring record previously held by Worthy Patterson. The spirit and sportsmanship exhibited by the team have impressed the courtmen of other schools to the extent of overbalancing the importance of score. TENNIS Coach Dattola will lead the complete last year's net team against its foes for the 1950 season. The return of all these regulars promises a good season with more thrilling tennis than ever played before. With the Coming of Spring, the racquet boys on our squad will be driving that ball back and forth across the nets. They will be joined by many enthusiasts who will encourage them on to success. Because our year book goes to press before the Conn. State Relays and the Rye Invitation and State championship meets, it is impossible to give results although we can make predictions as has been done in previous years This year Coach Gustafson will depend largely upon Ray Chickanis, his record breaking senior in the dis- tances, followed by Eddy Fox, Bill Griffin, George Brotherton and jim McGrath. The sprints with Bill Cody and Whitey O'Brien as the nucleus and Larry Wah, Bryce Brown, Cullen, Serna, and Phil Decker to brighten the picture, the outlook appears promising. A 24 K The field events will feature such stalwarts as Fred Marr in the lavelin Chuck Kidner and Bill Griffin leading the high jumpers and Bob Mead along with Ed Kristoff topping the pole vaulters Bill Cody and Cliff Cross will try for top honors in the broad jump while leading the shot putters will be Harold Bauten and Doug Salter The discus will be action packed in a contest between Doug Salter and lanky Fred Marr Although our track team has compiled an enviable record in previous years it cannot coast along on its laurels. Championship teams are produced as a result of hard and tedious hours on the field and considering the host of eager aspirants on this years team we should have nothing short of a better than average season. ow 1, left to right: B. HOCKEY With only two members of last year's starting line-up on the roster this year, the Big Red hockey team broke from the opening face-oil to three consecutive victories. Although hampered by sickness and injuries, the team managed to end the season with an even record of four wins, four set-backs, and two ties. High spot of the season came when the Cardinals faced Mamaroneck in the final game of the schedule with the Westchester Hockey League title at stake. With both teams playing a thrilling brand of hockey, Mamaroneck, in the final period, managed to sneak the puck past goalie Clarke Russ on a screen shot to notch a 1-0 victory. -T The sextet's games were sparked by the enthusiasm and playing of Captain Tom Montgomery, Pete jenkins, 'Mouse' Prat- ley, Fred Marr, Gif? Reed, and Clarke Russ. SPRING TRAINING BASEBALL With about one-half of last year's regulars return- ing, the G.H.S. baseball team of 1950 should have a very good season. While playing with last year's squad, these men showed plenty of hustle and spirit, two fac- tors which can make a big difference against the tough reams in the league. The expert coaching and guidance of Mr. Covino should, as in the past, turn out a line squad which our school can be proud of. Although this piece merely represents a gaze in the crystal ball, we look forward to hearing the crack of bats and the roar of the crowd come from Havemeyer Field. 4 Row 1, left to right: 1. Ryan, j. GREEN WITCH In this school year as in the past, our school magazine, which is published once a semester by the students, has kept up its high standard. New articles were added which pertained more to the students them- selvesg such as class activities. Once again the staff promoted the Christmas Dance, which was informal- the f1rst time in its history. In the Spring, it sponsored the essay and short story contest-looked forward to by many. THE NEWSPAPER The Witch's Brew, the school news- paper, under the direction of Mr. Hathe- way, has had an auspicious beginning. Composed of four pages, each monthly edition deals with the current happenings around school, plus many special features. The newspaper has quickly taken its place among the older club activities.
