,mzm afvzwezmof P Unaware that we were to witness such cataclysmic events as the invasion of Poland, the fall of France, the battle of Britain, the attack on Russia, and Pearl Harbor, the freshman class of January, 1939 entered the hallowed halls of Greenwich High School much as did the countless classes preceding it-bewildered, noisy, egotistical. The sharp corners were soon rounded off, however, as we ventured into the hitherto unknown realm of extra-curricular activities. During our first year the ranks of those in the music departments were swelled by Alexander Bogdanchik and George Whelan, who gave freely of their talents to the band' and the orchestra as well as to the Boys' Glee Club. Victory Huley, one of the most talented violinists ever to pass through the portals of our Alma Mater, was destined to attain the honored position of concert-master of the orchestra in his sophomore year. Robert O'Brien ably served both the band and Boys' Glee Club, and Alma WILLIAM WOODRUFF President Helupka and Frank Peterson contributed their abilities to the Glee Clubs. ' The roster of the Dramatic Association was increased by Dorothy Doyle, Gladys Levine, who, as a sophomore, starred in the play What A Life, and Gertrude Hall, who was, in her senior year, to give a memorable performance as the nurse in the Man Who Came To Dinner. She was awarded the honor of initiation into the select group of Thespians. This year also found Joseph Romeo and Edythe Ehlers members of the Dramatic Association, the latter ably performing an im- portant role in It 'I Were King, and continuing to score many ,., . ,,-,,- 4, MURIEL SNELL Secretary ' GEORGE WHELAN G. O. Representative more successes, rising to the presidency of the D.A. and to mem- bership in the Thespians. Like the calm before the storm, our junior year was rather uneventful compared with the activity in the year to come. To the ranks of the Dramatic Association was added the name of another candidate, Mildred Travalgia. The Opera Club presented as its annual operetta The Waltz Dream, in which John Allan and Dick Conlin played leading roles, as they did in The Mocking Bird, which was given the following year. The Witch Staff acquired Gert Hall, Rose Grippo, and John Cooney as literary aspirants. John Kirhoffer brought honor to our class by winning an award- in the Annual Witch Short Story Contest, while Edythe Ehlers starred in the D.A.'s productions June Mad and The Thirteenth Chair.
