The sharp corners were soon rounded off, however, as we ventured into the hitherto unknown realm of extra-curricular activities. During our first year the ranks of those in the music departments were swelled by Alexander Bogdanchik and George Whelan, who gave freely of their talents to the band' and the orchestra as well as to the Boys' Glee Club. Victory Huley, one of the most talented violinists ever to pass through the portals of our Alma Mater, was destined to attain the honored position of concert-master of the orchestra in his sophomore year. Robert O'Brien ably served both the band and Boys' Glee Club, and Alma WILLIAM WOODRUFF President Helupka and Frank Peterson contributed their abilities to the Glee Clubs. ' The roster of the Dramatic Association was increased by Dorothy Doyle, Gladys Levine, who, as a sophomore, starred in the play What A Life, and Gertrude Hall, who was, in her senior year, to give a memorable performance as the nurse in the Man Who Came To Dinner. She was awarded the honor of initiation into the select group of Thespians. This year also found Joseph Romeo and Edythe Ehlers members of the Dramatic Association, the latter ably performing an im- portant role in It 'I Were King, and continuing to score many ,., . ,,-,,- 4, MURIEL SNELL Secretary ' GEORGE WHELAN G. O. Representative more successes, rising to the presidency of the D.A. and to mem- bership in the Thespians. Like the calm before the storm, our junior year was rather uneventful compared with the activity in the year to come. To the ranks of the Dramatic Association was added the name of another candidate, Mildred Travalgia. The Opera Club presented as its annual operetta The Waltz Dream, in which John Allan and Dick Conlin played leading roles, as they did in The Mocking Bird, which was given the following year. The Witch Staff acquired Gert Hall, Rose Grippo, and John Cooney as literary aspirants. John Kirhoffer brought honor to our class by winning an award- in the Annual Witch Short Story Contest, while Edythe Ehlers starred in the D.A.'s productions June Mad and The Thirteenth Chair. W, 1943 Unaware that we were to witness such cataclysmic events as the invasion of Poland, the fall of France, the battle of Britain, the attack on Russia, and Pearl Harbor, the freshman class of January, 1939 entered the hallowed halls of Greenwich High School much as did the countless classes preceding it-bewildered, noisy, egotistical. Robert O'Brien ably served both the band and Boys' Glee Club, and Alma , 74 ,, .1F'..t 1 X. 2' , MAUDE WAGNER Vice-President ville under the able direction of dauntless Dot Doyle. Although it is impossible to enumerate the many without whose help it would have been impossible to stage the production, Bernard Cuperman, Gertrude Hall, Bill Woodruff, and Jerome Wanko deserve special mention. In addition to the customary affairs and duties confronting every senior class, we were concerned principally with activities related to the war. Some of our members, wishing to give their all to the inevitable accomplishment of victory, entered the ranks ot our armed forces. Alex Bogdanchik,,Alex Gerasimuk, George Hyland, Victor Huley, Roman Kosinsky, Robert Kunz, Edward McNamara, Joseph McTeigue, Kenneth Meredith, James Murphy, 1 itil? RICHARD CONLIN Treasurer Robert O'Brien, Joseph Romeo and Mario Stroili are members of this group, and others are on call or plan to join immediately after graduation. The rest of us, not in a position to contribute so fully, are doing our part on the home front as active members of the Victory Corps, an organization formed during this year for the purpose of consolidating many of the activities relating to the war effort, and introducing many new ones. And so amid this aggressive spirit of war and its sacrifices, we leave, confident of the dawning of' victory and peace for the hosts of freedom, who may once again enjoy the advantages of which our present educational system is a major part. The taller, removing a dripping rain hat, leaned I understand you were the historian for the June class of '43 ? he asked. I nodded. The other man reached inside his sweater Perhaps you remember this issue. He pointed to a picture on page one. It's the model community the government built recently. Instead of breaking it up, as was planned originally, And, interrupted the taller, the entire population is to con- sist of just one graduating class. In this way the familiarity and brotherhood of former school companions can be utilized, and We, broke in the short one, want to know it your class at the whole business. V V Q forward. and brought out a current newspaper. n y: I I . H M they re going to settle it permanently. if Q 5 sy.. t',i better results obtained all around. A ,.,,Q would do. How many were in it ? ,ff-...f ' f 'J ., . A gag? 205, ' I stammered, dumbfounded i ROY BONAPARTE President Incredible, returned me coated one, 'tis the exact accom- modation of the community. But come, what sort of a class was it ? Bob McPart1and, Prank Daur, and, 'for the last two years, Roy Bonaparte were the class presidents-the vice presidents, also in order, Were' Ann Cunningham, Pete Mitchell, Paul Keegan, and Jeep Salvatore, I said in one breath. Fine, returned the bright shirted one, and the secretaries and treasurers ? Jimmy Muir and John Carmichael, Donald Creamer and Steve Purcell, Steve Purcell and Dave Schroeder, and, for the senior year, Steve Purcell and Bill Caryl. The G. O. class representatives for the four years were Frank Daur, Ruth Doran, Bill Caryl, and Willard Sent. The stubby man looked up. Did you have any intellects? We'1l need them. Oh yes, I hastened. Elizabeth Frazier, Virginia Fanning, Helen Heikkila, Janet Hull, Corinne Morrell, Josephine Murgiano, Ange- lina Russo, Janet Tooley, Rolf Pjelde, George Davis, and James Fin- STEPHEN PURCELL Secretary ney were elected to the National Honor Society in their third year. Not many, remarked the bright shirt. Well, some more made it in their fourth year, I offered, and WILLARD SENI-' G. O. Representative gave him these names: Jane Banta, Tilda Bologna, Evelyn Comeau, Joy Hacker, Margaret Hnotter, Elizabeth Larrabee, Phebe Meringolo, Joan Roberts, Lillian Robinson, Jean Wilhelm, Lehbon Brandt, John Brennan, Hodge Brush, Charles Butter, and Vincent Perna. The model community will have a theatre- began one. , Of course. Our class abounded with dramatic ability, I inter- rupted. The Dramatic Association, of which Joan ,Bradley and Michael Isbell were president and vice president, produced six great plays with talent from our class. 'If I Were King,' in which Eleanor Hale and Cliff Wilmot had parts, 'What A Life,' with 'Joan Bradley, 'The 13th Chair,' with Eleanor Hale appearing again, 'June Mad,' with Joan Bradley, Jane Banta, and' Cliff Wilmot, 'High Tor,' with Eleanor Hale and Michal Isbell featured, and Janet Tooley, 'The Man Who Came To Dinner,' with Joan Bradley in an important role. Those dramas were great entertainment, I hear, remarked the une, 1943 stubby man, stroking his beard. And what of the Operettas ? Three, I answered. First, 'Little Women,' with Lillian Robin- son fstudent director of the opera clubl, Josephine Barone, Janet Tooley, Margaret Knotter, Tilda Bologna, and Charles Butter. Second, 'The Waltz Dream,' with Lillian Robinson, Virginia Ash, Josephine Barone. Third, 'The Mocking Bird,' with Lillian Robin- son, Janet Hall, lclub secretaryl, Betty Hawkins, Joan Bradley, Jose- phine Murgiano, Ruth Nelson, Gloria Skue, and Dan Jankovich. The club had some wonderful voices, mused the taller of the two. On the subject of music, I suggested, there was also a group fx who, through faithful adherence to the Band and Orchestra, en- A-i ,, riched the quality of the school. Charles Butter, Wiles Dauphine, ' .,, W ' V Frank Fuscaldo, Sam Pasquerelli, Angelo Pucci, Joseph Policastro, 7 t. , and Douglas Stevens are some. Also Tilda Bologna, Betty Chard, Mar- ' Eg,-Qtf 1 .L ff, garet Hnotter, Winifred Yelsosky, George Davis, .and Patsy Bova. .V N, K... . We've heard what a job they did, both remarked. Tell us ' iit' f though, would there be material for the model newspaper? V, V X5g?f9x? fit, Throughout the class ran a literary vein, I recalled. 'The lg'Av,:Eg,3,b?T'W ,iiw,,,:, EUGENE SALVATORE Vice-President WILLIAM CARYL Treasurer They were a team, confessed the two together. But say- have you anything to say about the class as a whole? I thought a minute. Mr, Shattuck, and later, Mr. Bella were our Green Witch, our superior school magazine, had Rolf Fjelde, editor, Jean Wilhelm, associate editor, and many more from the '43 class on its staff, including Michal Isbell, Gloria Hannigan, Janet Tooley, Claire Kelly, Elizabeth Frazier, Robert apJones, George Davis, and James Finney. When the 'G.H.S. News' appeared in our fourth year, several seniors were on its staff, two of them running a column. Many students ofthe class, I added, distinguished themselves individually. Elizabeth Frazier rose to head the debating club. Rolf Fjelde, president of the German Club, received, in his third year, the Harvard Book Prize for being the most outstanding junior. That's only two, there were others--some in the field of sports. That's right, remarked the stubby one. This community will have a football team-. But I cut them short. What a bunch of scrappers Coach Conlin, and later, Coach Wilson turned out. Why, there was Pete Mitchell, John Cooney, Hodge Brush, Albert Carroll, Bob Kepple, Paul Palmer, Vincent Perna, Jeep Salvatore, and- principals. The '43 class went through a lot with their inspiration. And you may want to remember the war. It burst on us as seniors, and we had to step lively to set the school an example by purchasing bonds and shouldering the Victory Corps. However, I spoke, that is all by the board now, gentlemen. The 'class' will never more exist. Only its spirit haunts the old school, for the individual members are scattered far beyond its shadow. But say, ,I said, collecting myself, will you bringsthem together for your model town ? They arose together, one tucking his beard in his sweater, the other tumbling with his cap. Well, spoke the taller, we hardly expected your class was that good. Why, we'd have to rebuild the town completely to do it justicel Consider yourself lucky to have belonged to it, the class of '43l They left, disappearing into the rain. GEORGE DAVIS, Historian. Bennett 1 cours The Greenwich High School Victory Corps was officially started December 7, 1942, on the first anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Its primary purposes are to give all pos- sible student aid to the war effort, and to train its members to take their places in war industries or the armed forces after graduation. Although the Victory Corps movement is government spon- sored and nation-wide, each school may use its own discretion as to organization and leadership of its activities. In our case, a board of teachers, headed by Mr. Clarence Schwager, took the suggestions of the War Department, adapted them to our particular needs, and has, through continued effort, made the Victory Corps the efficient and useful organization it is today. Included in the list of Victory Corps activities are some jobs immediately vital to the war effort, such as the Surgical Dressings and the Home Ties Groups, and such civilian defense activities as Air Spotters and Mobile Unit, as well as many War Courses that train pupils for future induction or war work. The training programs range from pre-flight to cooking and include such valu- able possibilities as boxing, chemical warfare, marksmanship, home -mf Clarence E. Many of our old clubs have come into the Victory Corps set-up' and have gained new life in the transition. The S. News has been revised as the official organ of the Victory Corps. lts staff, under the editorship of Bill Duff, with Mr.'Cunningham as adviser, has done a grand job of keeping us posted on develop- ments around school. The News staff has also done valuable work in suggesting improvements in the program and by giving an S for Service in recognition of exceptional contributions of time and effort on the part of students to the war effort. At press time an S had been awarded to only two deserving students. One went to Edith Vahsen for her untiring work in gathering and compiling data for the Victory Corps roster and the office file of Victory Corps information, andthe other to Tom Little for his able instruction in the aircraft identification course and his more than five hundred hours on the tower as an airplane spotter. Though these two people have' made great individual con- tributions, certain activities have made equally enviable records. The Surgical Dressings Group, for instance, recently established a production record of four hundred dressings in a single day, while the Home Ties Group does equally well by keeping in touch with 350 G. H. S. men in the service. Shown at left is Daphne Wilkins, one of our most faithful airspotters, phoning in a plane. l i Elizabeth Frazier is shown leading a discussion of the United Nations Club. These students, realizing that there will be a serious food shortage unless every available garden is made to produce, have been working since early in the spring. ln addition to preparing seed flats and distributing them to various home rooms, pupils have made their own Victory gardens, which they tend faithfully during Victory Corps periods and after school. With the experi- ence gained in this garden and in their classes, many of the stu- dents hope to be able to get jobs on farms this summer where they can really work for victory. We of The Compass feel that this spirit, typical of that in all our war courses and in the whole country, will lead to a speedy victory over our enemies. POUGHHEEPSIE-GREENWICH The Greenwich High School football team, per- haps the most inexperienced Cardinal team in recent years, dropped its inaugural contest at Poughkeepsie, coming out on the short end of a 19-12 score. The Redbirds, however, provided their hosts with a hard-fought contest, which fea- tured, among other things, a strong aerial attack sparked by the throwing arm of half-back Pete Mitchell. Paul Palovchek scored in the third quar- ter on a pass. In the fourth quarter, just before the final whistle, Maxon scored again on a pass from Mitchell. Both attempts at the extra point failed. Poughkeepsie scored one tally in the first quarter, another in the second, and another in the final quarter. The weather was the common foe and enforced a dull, uneventful contest by virtue of the muddy, slippery field, pelting tor- rential downpour, and a slippery ball. Greenwich outplayed their opponents and would no doubt have won but for one of those bad breaks, suffered when Referee Eddie Shugrue, through a mistake, exposed a Greenwich sleeper to the opponents. A tense moment. PORT CHESTER-GREENWICH On Hal1owe'en the Greenwich High School foot- ball team went down to a bitter defeat at the hands of a powerful, unbeaten Port Chester eleven 38-18. The traditional rivals met on Have- meyer Fieldqand -played one of their most spec- tacular games. At the close of the contest, an im- pressive, and somewhat startling list of statistics was compiled. Featured were spectacular touch- down runs, one of ninety yards by Mitchell in the first quarter and one of seventy-one yards by Bill Bergeron in the third quarter. Because of a leg injury during the third period, Charles Howgate was removed from the game. The third Cardinal touchdown was scored by Bill Bergeron after re- ceiving a pass from Mitchell. Scrimmage on the hockey field. WEST HAVEN-GREENWICH The Greenwich High School team went down to a stunning defeat at the hands of a powerful West Haven eleven. At the conclusion of the game, the fourth of the season for the Cardinals, they found themselves on the wrong end of a 21-0 score. The Redbirds gave their best, but the best just wasn't good enough. The game was all West Haven except for a fifty yard run by Bergeron in the third period and a subsequent march to within twenty yards of the goal line. CENTRAL-GREENWICH The Greenwich High School football team once again succumbed to defeat, but not without a hard battle. This time they were defeated by Bridgeport Central in a suspense laden game on Havemeyer Field. The Cardinals' aerial attack was highly ineffectual-the result of a cold, whipping wind. The Bridgeport team scored in the first and fourth quarters. Bud Carroll came through with the only touchdown in the third period. At the final whistle the Big Red was on the short end of a 13-T score. l l l GREENWICH-TWENTY TWO i DANBURY-GREENWICH N The Greenwich High School football team, after suffering five set-backs and one tie, finally met with elusive and long awaited victory-the vic- tory being gained at the expense of the Cardinals' hosts, the Danbury football team. The Big Red boys, full of fight and determination, made the ilone tally of the game in the second quarter on a pass to John Cooney, giving G. H. S. a 7-0 advan- tage. l NORWALH-GREENWICH The Greenwich High School football team brought its sadly begun 1942 football season to a conclusion in a blaze of power and glory. The victory, the second in a row for the Redbirds, was a much deserved one over Norwalk, with the Cardinals making nine first downs as opposed to two for Norwalk. The Cardinals outplayed their visitors throughout the contest, which ended, inci- dentally, with the Cards on the better side of a 6-0 score.
