We have tried to portray graphically, memories that may serve to steer us on the path to success in future years. Our days in school are num' hered and time in its inimitalwle style passes on. Thus the sole purpose of this hook will have heen accomplished if, in days to come, one who has hutfeted the storms of fortune can, in perusing these pages, find guidance from the inspiring traditions of Greenwich High School. We hope that we have made this Conv pass symlwolic of the high ambitions and noteworthy achievements of our classmatesg so that it will serve to remind us of our group as one rich in ideals and memories. Although the ticket oflice on the right was closed, they could visualize Mr. Morgan peering out at tardy students. The bulletin board displayed that lone woolen glove as yet unclaimed, and yesterday's menu hung limply, 'supported by a single tack. Satisfied that nothing had changed, the phantoms as' cended to the third floor, their former abode. They noticed an old locker hanging on one rusty hinge in a woefbegone manner. Inside was a loose-leaf notebook, mottled and musty :with age. Why, it contains all the data of the class of '4l! Look, this faded writing seems familiar! exclaimed one, brushing the accumulated dust from the yellowed pages. Our feats as freshmen are recorded on the first page. Well, we were rather unimposing at first, but Paul Martin, Beverly Smith, Mary Martin, and Mary Murdoch joined the Freshman Glee Club, and George Butter and John Steeves be' came members of the band. Lou Feldman, our great football star, began his career as a member of the freshman team. Let's look at the sophomore year when we were just starting to lose our inf feriority complex. You remember, we presented three Caney Creek plays which were written by Josephine Bologna, Donna Larrabee, and Helen Kirhoffer. Adeline Glionna, Dot Nickerson, and Beverly Smith showed their acting ability and soon appeared in major productions. Dell Davison scored a direct hit in 'Arms and the Man'! In the fall Adeline and Dot had small but forceful parts in 'Stage Door'. Here's the list of class officers: Gordon Hale was presidentg Don Kullander, vice presif dent, and Edna Myder, secretary: We can't turn the page without mentioning the operetta 'My Maryland', for Beverly Smith and Dell Davison played important roles and Mary Murdoch was in the chorus. We haven't much time left. Let's see what happened in the third year. Oh, yes, Madeline Chmielowiec, Betty Jane Kinzel, Katherine Clarke, Marie Wanamaker, Evangeline Crombie, Anne Meyer, Concetta Morganti, and Josephine Bologna were active in sports. Dell Davison was superb in both 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'You Can't Take It With Youf There's no doubt about it, Dell was the Class Actress. Our two leading male singers, Beverly Smith and Paul Martin, starred in 'H.M.S. Pinaforef Now we'll see our past glories as Seniors. Here, you read for awhile, even a ghost's throat gets hoarse. Righto. The class oiiicers that year were Bob McKinley, president, Don Kulf lander, vice president, Adeline Glionna, secretaryg and John Morrison, treasurer. Donna Larrabee was president of the Debating Club, and Helen Kirhoffer was editor of the 'Witch' with John Steevcs as exchange editor. Adeline Glionna and Dot Nickerson became stars in 'If I Were King'. Addie again had the lead in 'What A Life', ably supported by Bev Smith and Dell Davison. Remember how delighted we were to learn that Mr. Bella was to be our new principal? I'll never forget that! The impressive list of our illustrious classmates in the National Honor Society was also memorable. It included: George Butter, Donna Larrabee, Vernon Abramson, Donald Kullander, Helen Kirhoffer, Adeline Glionna, Betty Jane Kinzel, Concetta Morganti, Jean Callaghan, Evangeline Crombie, Mary Martin, John Morrison, Josephine Musca, Edna Myder, Catherine Paight, Mary Murdoch, Beth Yule, Dot Nickerson, Helen Shmak, Josephine Bologna, and Bob McKinley. In football Lou Feldman, Bob McKinley, Bud Salvatore, Tom Musca, and Norman Iron were running and tackling their way to fame. Then there was the vaudeville, class day-but, time's up now. Anyway, they were four eventful years with something always going on. I tell you I wouldn't mind being back. With this remark the two wraiths returned the antiquated tome to its dusty rest' ing place, and, as silently as they had come, departed from the halls of G.I'I.S. H. S., enveloping it in a black, foggy shroud. Inside, mutterings and strange murmurs are heard. Suspicious, we come closer and crawl through a window. We have chanced upon the annual meeting of the Memory Club. Each year after the last graduate has departed, the building settles down to apparent peace and quiet. However, as soon as privacy is insured, the rooms awaken and draw forth longfforgotten memories. Each room likes to think itself richest in these priceless treasures, thus, the arguments. Tonight the discussion is concemed with the june Class of 1941. If we walk on tiptoe and keep silent, we shall overhear their conversations. From what we can understand, this class had the unusual distinction of having had three different principals. As shy freshmen, their adviser and friend was Pop Folsom. Through the vicissitudes of sophomore and junior years, they were led by Mr. Shattuck. In their senior year they followed the counsel of Mr. Bella. We are startled by a clear voice, proud and boastful: I have seen the girls at work and at play for four years. Especially well do I remember: Virginia Monty, Betty Moore, Virginia Eldred, Eleanor Hogan, Alice Nunnenkamp, Alice Mayes, Ann Murphy, and Gloria Belmont. Afternoons they played hockey, basket' ball, volleyball, badmin- Suddenly a booming voice interrupts. I also have seen the boys come and go. We sent forth teams full of fight and spirit. Each fall, football teams ran from my locker room, eager and willing. During the '40 season they won the Fairfield County Championship, helped by Don Ash, Pete Dluznieski, joe Halligan, Larry Dudas, and Dick Cunningham. Reluctantly leaving the argument, we creep through the gloomy corridors, until we are stopped by a forceful voice calling out: During junior year, the National Honor Society was granted a charter in G. H. S., and twelve members of the class were initiated: Elly Ahnert, Donald Ash, Robert Bonaparte, Catherine Davis, Lois Faulkner, Carolyn jackson, Betty Landis, Alice Mayes, Betty Moore, Alice Nunnenkamp, Frank Palmatier, and Miriam Walsh. In their senior year twelve more were selected: Pearl Baker, Mary Ann Beiser, Virginia Eldred, Josephine Koziel, Antoinette Letta, Arthur McElfresh, Florence Okerman, Virginia Stevenson, Virginia Tedeschi, Gerda Thorenz, Evelyn Victor, and Frances Witewskif' Down the hall we hear: I have observed their earliest efforts at acting. In their junior year they suddenly rose and took important roles in the plays, 'It Can't Happen Here' and 'If I Were King' During their senior year they excelled in 'What a Life,' and 'The Thirteenth Chairf This class contributed to the ranks of the National Thespians such outstanding actors and actresses as Gordon Hale, Mary Thiel, Betty Moore, Jack Pearl, Howe Morris, Henry Zieba, Bill Taylor, Charles Emerson, and Leonard Ashinf' In another room, elections are being discussed. Do you remember their junior year when Dick Slater was President, Peter Dluznieski, Vice President, Don Ash, Secretary'Treasurerg and john McDonnell and Don Ash, G. O. Representatives? Yes, and during senior year the popoular Don Ash was elected Presidentg Miriam Walsh, Vice President, Justine Arata, Secretary, Bob Barnes, Treasurer, and Henry Zieba and Joe Halligan, G. O. Representatives. Once more the rumbling voice of the gym: They called the junior Prom, 'The Stardust Prom'. Dancing beneath a canopy of twinkling, silvery stars- Gradually the talk becomes softer until finally words are scarcely audible. As we again crawl through the window, more slowly this time, our minds are filled with thoughts of this class. People will contend that inanimate objects have no emotions. We know, however, that our redfbrick edifice will always cherish memories of the illustrious Class of june, 1941. Under the ex' pert guidance of Mr. Ray Harrington, the band has participated in a great many important activities. The annual concert, held on February 14 of this year, was a good example to demonstrate how much can be ac' complished by many hours of practice and also showed the skill of the players. Lee Carpenter, shown in action at the right, our gallant drum major, has held that haton for the past three years, and he certainly can twirl! As almost every sports fan knows, the red and white uniformed hand is a striking feature of all our high school foothall games. .ev 'C IN' am. N. Every Monday night in Rye on the Playland Rink our boys get on the ice and do their level best. Mr. -I. B. Conlon, head of the athletic def partment, is coach of the team and a mighty fine job he does. Johnny Mc' Donald was elected captain by the boys with Buddy Tiebout and Bobby Griggs as managers. Bob Bonaparte, john Roddy, Red McKean, Tick Townsend, Newkirk Crockett, and Pete Bonvenuto make up a great part of the team. The squad has an excellent rating, having lost only two matches and tied one out of twelve games played. Ten games make up the league and two games are played outside, one with Norwalk and one with St. Francis School. As yet we have no rink in Greenwich so that the boys are forced to practice in Rye. We hope to have a rink of our own in the near future. Front row, left to right- V. Benvenuto, S. Stefanowicz, R. Bonaparte, P. Mitchell, Roddy. Rear row, left to right+R. Griggs, manager, W. C. card is used as an admission ticket to all the home basketball games and entitles us to a reduction on the outfofftown ones. With Mr. C. Gustafson as coach and Pete Dluznieski as captain, the red team moved right along. Usually eight' een games are played by the end of the season and this year we chalked up nine victories to our name. We also tied for second place in the County Championship. Home games were played with Danbury, Fairfield, Bassick, Central, Norwalk, 'Nestf port, Port Chester, Alumni and Collegians. The squad has long been noted for its team work and spirit of fair play. Much credit should be given to: Dick Cunningham, Pete Dluznieski, Walt Richardson, Don Ash and Bob McKinley, seniors who played their last game for their alma mater. . VVhitey Lepo, John Frassetto, and George Hupal have distinguished themselves in the eyes of G. H. S. because of their ability in cross country racing. Orchesfra -One of the oldest activities in Greenwich High School is the school orchestra. Under the expert leadership of Mr. Ray Harrington, it has been in existence since 1924. With an average of fortyffive players each year, the orchesf tra takes a major part in the fall and spring plays of the Dramatic Association. Also for the past seventeen years each graduf ating class has marched to the familiar strains of Greenwich Alma Materu, played by the orchestra. The rehearsals, held on Monday after' noons, are eagerly attended by all mem' bers. Sometimes Mr. Harrington allows the orchestra to play some of his own compositions. A set of chimes was inf vented by Mr. Harrington and has proved a valuable addition to the orchestra. Due to earlier training in the gram' mar schools and private instruction, many of the entering freshmen are able to join the orchestra immediate' ly. Among the veterans of the 1941 class are: Nancy Harrington, Anne Hatheway, concert mistress, Gerry and Esther Denning, Wesley Robin- son, Hjalmar Schmitz, and Jimmy Glenister. Boys' Glee Club -This organization is comprised of approximately thirty boys, who have shown an inf terest in music and enjoy singing en masse , under the able direction of Mr. Ray Harrington. Although it is only possible to meet once a week, the boys accom' plish a great deal of work. They learn to read music, to sing in four part harmony, and they become ac' quainted with the various choral types of music. The group has a large repertoire from which it chooses the tunes it enjoys most, to sing in public. The glee club sings at many public affairs and has taken part in practically every graduation. The club has made numerous recordings for various purposes. Among these recordings several Christmas carols were chosen to be amplified throughout the town during the past Christmas holidays. Many boys make the college glee c choral and glee societies. lubs and are members of the local Un the upper right is a picture of Johnny Steeves as he plays the piano. Front row, left to rightfG. Every spring the magazine sponsors a short story and essay contest and awards prizes to the best in each entry. This year has been an especially busy one for members of the staff. In order to raise funds for a betterlmagazine, the staff challenged mem' bers of the faculty to a hairfraising broomstick hockey game, which went over with a bang! And that wasn't all. Later, they took on the football team in an Information Please quiz- and won!!! The judges are pictured at the ieft: Miss M. C, Donovan, Miss D. Finnie and our former principal, Mr. H. C. Folsom.
