MESSAGES TO OUR . . . lt is not always easy to . . . apologize begin over take advice be unselfish keep on trying be considerate think and then act profit by mistakes forgive and forget shoulder the blame but it usually pays! BEST WISHES James Briglin Superintendent .' . . 1987 GRADUATES One of the truths about graduation is that after that special day you will never see over half of the graduates again. While that is not a happy truth, it should convince you to be sure to keep in touch with those special few classmates who have shared your life and your education these past thirteen years. You will find - as your parents know - that people are more important than things and high school friends have shared with you that most critical portion of your life. Wherever you go, and whatever you do, protect your health, strive for positive achievement and retain your friends. lvly very best for your future. P ,. ,af Miss McManus McManus of Ballston Lake was to replace Mr. John Ross, retir- Elementary Principal. Miss McManus formerly employed by the Saratoga School system as an elementary in grade 6 and grade 1, district- teacherfcoordinator of the gifted talented program and most recently a full-time administrative intern. Miss McManus is originally from West and from a family of eight children. graduated from Albertas Magnus chool in Bardonia, NY, received her Degree from Dominican Col- attended Russell Sage and the Col- of St. Rosep received her Master's from SUNY Albany and attended Adams State College. We welcome her to Greenwich Central. Students in grades K through 6 have been active during the 1986-1987 school year. Listed on this page are some of the functions in which the students have been active par- ticipants. Also given are some changes which affect faculty and students in the Elementary and Middle Grade Buildings. 2nd Graders Are Choosy Chewers The first food choices that children make are often for snacks. 2nd graders are becom- ing familiar with nutritious snacks. The children are discussing and are encouraged to choose healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables, cheese, crackers, popcorn, etc. Encourage your children to follow the slogan and to Be a Choosy Chewer and to make better snack choices. 4th Graders Visit Brookside Museum On October 10 all of the 4th grade classes went to the Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa. The colonial centered workshops focused on the many hardships experienced by the im- migrants of this era. The children watched and participated in ac- tivities such as food preservation, crop harvesting, soap making and linen making. The workshops allowed the students to gain an appreciation for the work involved in such activities. 5th Grade Visits Thunder Mountain Each of the 5th grade classes visited Thunder Mountain this year. Mr. Barber, owner of Thunder Mountain and a self- taught naturalist, assists the classes with their nature studies. The classes hike to Thunder Mountain from school and spend the day there. Three more trips are planned for the year to allow observations of changes through the four seasons. 5th Grades Visit Hildene The 5th graders visited Hildene in the fall of 1986. Hildene is in Manchester, Vermont and is the former home of Robert Todd Lin- coln. While there students hiked on a nearby nature trail, saw a slide presentation explaining the history of the estate and had a guided tour of the home. PTSA The Parent Teacher Student Association is a volunteer association seeking to unite the forces of home, school and com- munity on the behalf of the children. PTSA is composed of teachers, parents, students, school officials - everyone who cares about children. The local unit worked to achieve the following: staff recognition day, volunteer aide program, classroom parent program, assemblies, fund raising goals for school equipment, parent-teacher conference babysitting and, much more. Campbell's Product Labels The GCS PTSA again par- ticipated in the Labels for Education project. Accumulated Campbell's pro- ducts labels are to be redeemed for educational equipment for use within the school system. The PTSA wants to redeem the labels for a computer printer for use in the high school. FOURTH GRADE Row 1: S. McLean, J. Johnson, E. Phalen, Fl. Jeffords, S. Cary, J. Carter, C. Kelly, K. The Greenwich Chapter of FFA has been awarded the Superior Chapter of FFA for the past 15 years. This has been accomplished through year-round activities which include the National Convention, County Fair, judging contests and leadership classes at State FFA Camp. ' X 1 x 1 Mr. Robert Kuba Mr. Matthew Jones The Athletic Director has many responsibilities. They in- clude scheduling gym time, attending league meetings concerning individual teams, budgeting funds, and seeing to it that each coach and team has the necessary equip- ment. A great deal of time and effort goes into making cer- tain that each teams' needs are met. Mr. Kuba has been the Athletic Director since the fall of 1980. In that time he was pleased to see an increase in the number of students who participated in sports events. He was also instrumental in having the sports bus re-instated. Mr. Kuba resigned this position before the beginning of the 1986-1987 school year. He felt that with all of his out- side activities he had insufficient time to deal with all the responsibilities of Athletic Director and to be an efficient classroom teacher. Mr. Jones was agyointed Athletic Director at the begin- ning of the 1986-19 school year. He hopes to institute a regular practice of submitting end-of-the-season reports by the individual coaches. Mr. Jones feels that the responsibilities of Athletic Director are many and varied. We wish to thank Mr. Kuba for all the time and effort he has put into the athletic department. And, we would like to wish Mr. Jones well. We want to express our thanks to each of these men for their dedication to the athletic department. The 1986 Softball season was highlighted by a very ex- citing and successful sectional tournament. The girls brought a 9-5 league record to the tournament which gave them a fourth place seed. ln the first round of sectional play Greenwich defeated a very good Ft. Plain team by a score of 11-2. The semifinal round pitted the girls against an even tougher opponent, Canajoharie, who they defeated by a score of 10-4. In the championship game Greenwich dug deep and held tough as they went on to Maple Hill, 8-6, in a cold, wet, rain-soaked 7 inning ball game. With the win the Greenwich Witches regained the Section ll Class C Softball Title. 84 Quote: l got interested in running while watching my sist Nebraska.1. Our record declines from there with three more losses, two to our rivals from Hoosick Falls. We ended our season with a league record of 9-5. Determined to win jackets, we went to sectionals. We played tour emotional games jsome in pouring rainy in Saratoga, we won all four. This made us sectional champs - we earned our jackets.
