General Information On The U.S.S. Greenwich Bay, designated AVP-41, is C1 SmC111 S90- Iane tender capable of tending a squadron of seaplanes in a forward rea or a linuted period of time. During the recent war this type f itssel was often used in conjunction with the larger AV's since e small tenders are not able to hoist the planes on board for .Jar overhaul work. This vessel has the approximate dimension of a destroyer, being . emhat shorter in length but.wider. The overall length is 310 feet d the approximate displacement is 2830 tons as compared to 2200 n for the average destroyer. The crew consists of approximately officers and 200 men. Having a cruising range approxinately the same as the B-36 mber this type vessel is able to establish seaplane bases almost ywhere in the world. Such a base, with m oring bouys and seadrome nding lights, can be set up on a few hours notice. Such m bility ables the Navy's far ranging patrol planes to cover effectively il corners of the globe without the time consuming and expensive -cessity of establishing land plane fields which cannot'be moved . other areas as war theatres shift. A measure of this tender's bility is the fact that she covered a distance of 43,898 nautical les during a period of 15 months. ' The Greenich Bay, in addition to laying mooring buoys and es- ,blishing seadromes, provides the squadron personnel with complete- jy air-conditioned living quarters on the ship and supplies them th all the necessities of life such as food, laundry, barber shop, f ' 's store, etc. L The aircraft are provided with lube oil and aviation gasoline gf , GTE k ft. nrt: led! The ship's aerogrnpher provides weather data and all flights are controlled from the bridge in a manner similar to the aircraft cont rol tower on a land plane field. 5 While not heavily armed and annored in the manner of a naval combatant vessel this ship is capable of providing protection against attacking aircraft with weapons ranging from the fast firing 20 and 40 millimeter guns to the larger five inch dual purpose gun. Warning of the approach of attacking aircraft is provided by the radars located in the Oommand Informit ion Oenter. A varied assortment of bombs, depth charges, torpedqes, machine 91111 ammunition, etc. is available for the aircraft depending on the type of mission assigned to each plane. JATO Cjet asiisted take offj bottles are carried to aid in rough weather take cliffs, res- tricted seadromes and for overload conditions. The Greenwich Bay is one of two ships in the navy painted all vmite. The other being the President 's yacht, Williamsburg.
