Washington D.C.: President of the United States, CORRINE GRANT, has called a special session of Con- gress to consider the plea for statehood made by Puerto Rico's special representative, MARY ANNE PIRRITANOQ and to investigate the security leak on the moon project, headed by top physicists, EVERT LEHTOLA and MARY LOUISE FRIEDMAN. DANIEL RUKAVINA'S radical new spaceship design has somehow become known to foreign agents. It is believed that KATHERINE HIGGINBOTHAM, first woman chairman of the Senate Internal Security Committee, will take this opportunity to introduce into Congress the findings of private detective ROBERT ELICH, whom she has had checking on possible sub- versives. It is likely that Senator MAURINE JOHNSON, the only other woman on the committee, will try to block this action for party reasons. Secretary of State FRED BJ ORK, and Senator RICHARD COLE QR., Minn.j and Congressman MIKE BARNES QD., Minn.J are meeting with our U. N. dele- gate, DONALD HAAPOJA, to discuss the creation of an international moon port. Lady JUNE ELLA JONES of Great Britain will join them later to discuss England's part. Famed industrial designer, DAVE DOTLICH, has been stricken with a mysterious malady. Accompanied by nurses, NANCY STOWE and PAT ONDRASEK, he was flown in his private plane piloted by BILL PAVICH to Miami' Hospital, where he will be under the care of Dr. JOY SCHOCHET. Nurse JANE WILSON reports his condition is improving. CAROLE BROWN, Time magazine editor, reports Wall Street financier, EVELYN HAKALA, has engaged RODNEY OJA, noted broker, to handle her affairs. Mr. OJA, along with DAVID KANGAS and MYRNA LA- DOUX, through manipulation of stocks, have gained control of General Motors Corporation, headed by WIL- LIAM BREEN3' SONJA LEPISTO and VIOLET PRICH, both owners of large blocks of stock in the Conrad Hilton Hotel line, have combined their votes to make JEANETTE BARAT- TO president of the company. Actually this could not have been accomplished without the backing of chain- store owner MARGOT HAGEMAN, who owns a large block of stock. The four women had arranged secretly for this move and with the advantage of surprise they managed to gain control. Teachers of America, headed by BARB LARSEN, have declared to labor union leader ROGER ROESKE that unless wages are raised they will go on a nation-wide strike. It was announced ANNA LEE SEATER of Maine, CAROL TROBEC of California, and DOTTY GRAY oft Wisconsin, meeting as a committee, have drawn up a list of grievances to present to the union. Also in the field of education, JANET SISLER and CAROL SIMAT as Co-Deans of Togo Tech have been chosen Teachers of the Year for their revolutionary ideas in teaching. One of the World Wide Airline's planes crashed in the Rocky Mountains with Airline President JOHN CLARK aboard. Radio operator JACK AIMONETTI made a call for help. The rescue squad headed by GENE NURK- KA and TOM MORTON, and stewardesses DELORES BILL and DIANE KENTALA were cited for heroic service rendered after the tragedy. We are happy to say no one was seriously injured. For his tireless work in tracking down out-of-season hunters, GEORGE SHEVICH has been acclaimed as Best Game Warden of the Year by ORVAL WICK of the National Conservation Commission. Geologist DARRELL ANDERSON has announced the discovery of tremendous oil pools beneath the vast South- ern estate of FLORENCE ORTLEY. He was told of the possibility of oil by archaeologist WANDA LEKSEN, who had been investigating some ruins. DON MORROW, noted African guide, has just re- turned from the interior of Africa where he was guiding novelist LARRY LAAKSO in his search of material for a story. Mr. MORROW reports that MIRIAM JOHNSON, a missionary nurse, has succeeded in civilizing many of the natives, thus reducing the danger in the area. A feud seems to be developing in Washington between the higher echelon of the Armed Services headed by MARY SKORICH, Wave Chief, and President CORRINE GRANT, over the Chief Executive's decision to cut the size of the Navy. Navy Chief JOHN SOVIL wants to ac- complish this by cutting down Wave enlistments, but Admiral SKORICH is standing firm on the Waves' ability to accomplish as much as the male branch of the Navy. Admirals SKORICH and SOVIL are both agreed, how- ever, that it is the Army which should be reduced most, causing General DONALD FISKEWOLD and Wac head, GLORIA TRAVICA, to enter the fight. Some sort of blowup seems imminent. B77 Alarmed by an increase in juvenile delinquency, CAROL KORPI, Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, has set up a special commission, headed by sis- ters JO ANN and MARILYN STADE, to investigate the problem and see what can be done. The STADE sisters are well known for their work with young people. A drought condition is imminent in the Great Plains area, report Conservation Department experts WILLIAM KRUEGER and MISS ADELA RYDBERG. MRS. AUD- REY STEINBERG, whose husband owns large areas of farming land in this vicinity, has initiated a costly pro- gram to alleviate this problem but more help is needed. Wealthy farm owner LESTER BARTELL has contributed enormously to the program, but he too says that what they need is cooperation and aid from all those in- volved. And now for the sports news, brought to you by the JANIS and JANE Commercial Art School. JANIS STEIN- BERG and her colleague JANE PETERSON agree - 'For beauty in advertising, see us'. LEE CHRISINGER, after a near accident in the last few laps, pulled ahead to win the Indianapolis 500 mile race. Today, DON ERKKILA won the National ABC tournament. On the other side of the Atlantic, MARY MARGARET FOUCAULT made news by swimming the English channel in 9 hours, 20 minutes. The prev'ous record was 10 hours and 2 minutes. Coach BOB SARFF'S Golden Bears have copped the Rose Bowl title this year by defeating Stanford, 20-13. Congratulations Coach SARFFV' Some Winter Olympic news from Minneapolis, Min- nesota. CONNIE MANGSETH has just broken all Olympic ski jumping records by making a 490 foot jump. This is truly an amazing feat. And now, KAY MOREN bringing your news of Hol- lywood, fashions and society. But first a word from our sponsor, HAKALA'S Tooth Brush, invented by nurse KAY HAKALA, a noted orthodontistf' Emminent sociolo- gist, DOROTHY MANDICH, agrees that to be popular you should brush your teeth twice a day, so as long as you must, try HAKALA'S. Flash - from Hollywood, Lana Glamour, well known movie star surprised the picture colony by marry- ing Paramount's ace cameraman, BILL SCHWARTZ. PHYLLIS HARRINGTON has turned out another great performance on Broadway after being a smash hit in Domestic Symphony . MARIE POPOVICH, after years B78 of standing in for Jane Russell, is being acclaimed as a star in her own right. She is to be seen in the forthcoming movie Underground . Singer BEBO BERCHIN and BETH PETERSON have just finished an entertainment tour of army camps. These two have been doing won- derful work in making our boys happy and should be given a big hand. Actress KATHLEEN BECK has signed a contract to appear as Private Secretary , to replace the retiring Ann Southern. Last night a few were privileged to view the first 3-D television show, TOIVO KUJALA'S Toast of the Town, featuring the singing Cloverdale sisters, JANICE MAZAR, ELEANOR YUHALA, and ELEANOR KAIS- TO. JOELLE GALLANT brought down the house with her Gobelish humor. Even the commercial hit a new peak in T.V. production with the use of Power's models IRENE MANEY and EVELYN MILLER demonstrating the new style of eye glasses complete with the new JOHN HANSON windshield wipers. Fashion News: Fashion designers JOAN FOSS and MARY ANN ANDERSON created a furor by bringing the hemline of dresses to the calf-level. As you may recall, it was fashion expert GARY ABRAHAMSON who had raised it to knee-level in the late 50's . Society: MRS. BARBARA BELLEFY Hanson, wife of U. S. Steel Executive Gene Hanson was hostess last night at her annual spring ball at her home in Long Island. Present were several society leaders, such as DARLENE ANDERSON, wife of the Governor of New York, who appeared in a stunning evening dress designed for her by her private dressmaker, LAVONNE WAY- DULLA. Miss WAYDULLA is known as one of the best in her line. Also present was HELEN DIMICH, Wife of the President of Columbia University. What two well-known wealthy young play boys were socialites LYLIAS DRAXTEN and CHARLOTTE ED- NER seen with last night? A romance or two seem to be blooming. An amusing incident took place in Long Island this week end. While society leader DARLINE BECKER was paying a call on GERALDINE BERG at her Long Island estate, the ladies thought they smelled smoke and im- mediately called the fire department. Upon arrival, Fire Chief LLOYD LAROCK discovered it was merely a cake burning in the oven. The ladies invited Chief LAROCK to stay for lunch. This is your reporter KAY MOREN signing off. Listen in tomorrow again - same time - same station, for your up-to-the-minute news. SUCCESS To be a success should be my aim, My elders say to me. But let me please inquire of them Just what success may be. Yet asking let me answer, If I may be so bold, For I do not agree With all that I've been told. For not wealth, nor fame, nor power Can guarantee you happiness, But if you've a friend and are a friend, Then just living is a success. Mike Barnes I A sc.-vi' ,,Z,T 'p THE SEA The sea is the living, the sea is the dead. It is all that you know, but what can't be said. It is all that you see, and all that's not here, Everything darkened, everything drear, Everything shining, everything bright. The sea is both the day and the night. Evelyn Hakala THE TREE Outside the window is a tree, Its branches bare and blowing. The wind whistles the branches free While softlv it is snowing. Slowly the buds of spring appear. W'e see them for awhile. The winter is over, dull and drear, And spring begins to smile. Then summer again is here to stay The green leaves are alight. The summer rain came down today And will caress the leaves tonight. Evelyn Hakala ALONE Alone along the highway of life With no one by my side I knew the bitter struggle and'strife, I could not run and hide. Alone, alone, so all alone With nothing but my pride. But, now - oh, now, I'm never alone For God is by my side. Evelyn Hakala GRADUATION NIGHT What thoughts do you think On this night of all nights? Do you think of the past, Present or the future sights? Are you happy or sad As you look out at the crowd? Do you long for days past As you sit with head bowed? Are you waiting for the future Your eyes bright and clear, Or are you happy with the moment And with your friends, true and dear? These are my thoughts as I sit here among you, And I know you won't answer the same. But I speak for myself on this night, My thoughts are mixed up and I think of it as a game, A game of life, both happy and sad, But I know, really, I'm happy to be a grad, Q ' Evelyn Hakala WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE? Look at the soft, white flakes of snow, Floating so gently down to the ground, Then comes the cold and biting blast Of a blizzard, swirling all around. What makes the difference? Hear the gentle breezes blow, Causing the leaves to rustle and playg Then comes the swift and stinging wind Of the merciless hurricane on its way. What makes the difference? Feel the warmth of the summer sun, Bringing us health from its healing raysg Then comes the dry and blistering heat Of the drought that lasts for days and days. What makes the difference? See there the gentleman walking along, Honest and loyal and true to his callg Then comes the cruel and cheating form Of the brute who is hated and feared by all. What makes the difference? Audrey Schultz Steinberg A SMALL TOWN How dull, how empty the small town seems To a young and restless boy 5 But in city lights and crowded streets, Life's glamour becomes life's joy. Yet this joy when touched, when tasted, Is cold, and harsh, and rudeg And each passing stranger seems to say, To live you must be fast and shrewd. How then does that town appear While accompanied and yet alone? Why: that old town's not empty or dull- T at small town is home. Patronize Annual Advertisers First I UNDERSTANDING Some day the economic problems of all people will be solved. That day will come only when people learn to cooperate and understand each other. In this concluding paragraph of her first- prize winning essay on the subject How Farm- er and City Worker Can Best Solve Their Eco- nomic Problems , Sharon Tappe, member of Half-Way 4-H club, Keewatin, Minnesota, hits the main problem of our time - need for cooper- ation and understanding among people. The essay contest, sponsored by the CIO Farm Relations Committee, was begun as an effort of the CIO to improve relations between the farmer and the worker by promoting better understand- ing of their interdependence. The prosperity of the farmer, as a major purchaser of steel products, is vital to the steel- worker. Also, since a large part of the worker's wages goes for food and other farm products, it is important to the farmer that the worker's living standard be raisedg thereby bettering the farmer's market. In these challenging times the school can play a decisive role in bringing about understanding among people. It is increasingly important that educational opportunities be broadened and varied, to better train the leaders of tomorrow to courageously solve our problems, old and new, as well as problems yet unseen. The 3 r's no longer are enough. Some CIO Legislative Views Improvement of the Unemployment Compensation Law. Improvement of soil conservation program including conservation practices affecting wild life, game and fish. Enactment of a state-wide tenure law for teachers. Increased state aid for education to 25100. Aid to and development of small business legislation. Support of Cooperative Community Health Plan. Enact an F.E.P.C. program outlawing discrimination because of age, color, creed, religious or national ancestry. Revise the taxes on iron ore so that the mining com- panies bear a fair share of the tax burden. Repeal the vicious Per Capita Tax Limitation Law aimed at Iron Range schools and towns. We oppose sales taxes, payroll or wage taxes, and head taxes because they bear most heavily on those least able to pay. Support legislation requiring school districts to carry full coverage medical and surgical hospitalization insurance on all supervised activities on school property. Support permissive legislation to allow for granting of Sabbatical leave for teachers of at least one-half their salary on the schedule. Establish state aid to Junior Colleges on the same basis as for secondary students. Oppose any diversion of income tax fund, restricting its use for Public Education. Favor legislation permitting teachers to be covered under the social security act. Support legislation reducing the voting age from 21 to 18 years. Support legislation increasing the minimum wage in the state of Minnesota to 51.25 an hour.
