Miss DeNucci maintained a high scholarship average throughout the year, and Mr. Pedersen was a class officer, and was one of the five reasons why Itasca had a good basketball year. Close behind were Tanny Hopfinger and Gerry Faricy, taking second and third places, respectively. Tanny, a de- bater of the highest rank, was also a class officer, had mem- bership in various social clubs, and was in the college play, while Gerry, our editor-in-chief, was one of the charter members of the newly organized W. A. A., and also in the college play. Al Sandberg, who finished second in the Most Popular Boy contest, will be remembered as an all around good sport, and active in social clubs. Judo Predovich, third, earned positions on both the All Conference Basketball and Foot- ball teams, this, his first year, in college. Everyone who purchased an Annual was entitled to ten thousand votes, and had the privilege of dividing their votes between a girl and a boy, or using the whole amount for one person. The contest was used to stimulate interest in the sale of annuals, and at the same time to find out who were considered representative of the student body as a whole. Queen Nancy Nelson and her attendants, Dorothy Fa- lancer and Ruby Campbell, held the spotlight on the night of the Bachelor Home- coming Dance which was held after the Duluth-It-asca game. Petite Nancy was choosen queen by the entire student body in a contest sponsored by the Bachelors, with red-haired Dorothy, and tall blond Ruby taking sec- and and third place respec- tively. To Mr. Dudley, our speech instruc- tor, who led both the high school and college debate teams to victory, we give this honor of being listed in our Who's Who. George Prazich was given the Heller Award offered by Mr. S. E. Heller of Grand Rapids to the most deserving student on the basis of scholarship, extra-curricular activities, and all around good sportsmanship. As champion in the meal planning division of 4-H work, Evelyn Seeling was presented an award at the annual Activity Banquet held at Grand Rap- ids. Evelyn was also chosen as one of the county's best 4-H leaders last year. I-37 NZ-NEIHW WMOZHWWOI UFPZOU ZOHOZHMWPI SFO! I-34 STUDENT COUNCIL P. Pedersen D. Falancer E. Holm L. Nelson L. Larson T. Hopfinger G. Prazich G. Nadeau D. Barclay Dean Davis L. Mooers K. Wilkens fnot picturedi The Student Council of the Junior College represents both the Freshman and Sophomore classes, the various social clubs, and also other ac- tivities. It aims to harmonize their diverse opinions, and create a more constructive influence within the college. The Council is composed of the class officers, and the presidents of the following clubs and organizations: Itasca Players, Iota Kappa Kappa, Rho Nu Rho, Iota Beta Gamma, The Itas- can, and the Pep Club. Of this group, Tanny Hop- finger was choosen to be President, George Prazich, V ice-President, and Leone Larson, Secretary- Treasurer. The Council stands behind all activities, and tries to give practical and useful service to the college. Catherine Hopfinger will be remembered by her friends not only as the Salutatorian of the class of '40, but also as the girl with the feather who captured the coveted office of National Student Representative of the Phi Rho Pi for the year '39-'40 at the National Speech Tournament at Eveleth. This year's tennis squad will be larger than those in the past, with quite a bit of good material available. Itasca won the con- ference tennis meet three years ago, but since then has not been able to come close. Doc has hopes of getting into the run- ning again this year with the three veterans that are return- ing and the seven new-comers. Doc Willman's Tennis Squad: Front Row-Left to Right: N. Ellefson, A. The favorite sports are ping-pong, badminton, basket- ball, and swimming, and besides these there are volley- ball, archery, tennis, and shuffleboard. The girls partake in some or all of these activities in order to earn an award which is presented to all sophomore girls who upon graduation have earned a thousand points. Miss Falk is the sponsor of the W. A. A., and is a grand example for the girls. The president of the organi- zation is Geraldine Faricy, and the vice-president is Ruby Campbell. The many songs learned this year are of different types: sacred music, negro spirituals, and folk music of foreign lands. The choir has sung at the Christmas and Easter programs at school. and the members are look- ing forward to the tours and programs which are planned for the spring. This was the first year that the choir had official choir robes. The robes were made under the supervision of Mrs. Blanche Davis of the Home Eco- nomics department. 41 ln. Included in the club are our four peppy cheerleaders- Jenora fPennyl Larson, Dorothy Falancer, Bette Clare Olson, and Almetta Mackie. , The Pep Band, in its newness, has done wonders in the development of school patriotism. With Mr. Phillips directing, the few members who answer- ed the call have built an organization which we hope will remain a permanent feature at Itasca. THE ANNUAL The annual of this year is the first one that Itasca has published in seven years. The staff has tried hard to make it a book that will be enjoyed and treasured by its readers. It is hoped that it has succeeded in the fulfillment of this. The staff has endeavored to fill the pages with pictures so that in future years when you sit down and finger through this annual many pleasant memories will be recalled. We have enjoyed putting this book of memories out for you and we sincerel-y hope that you will have many pleasure-filled hours reading it. We, the college staff, wish to thank all who helped us in this production-Miss Damman, our grand faculty production adviser, and Mr. Sjoquist, our genial faculty business manager. We also wish to thank Mr. Cloutier for taking many of the pictures, Lillian Wirtanen for helping us with records and Dean Davis and Mr. Menozzi for co-operating with us to the fullest extent. Editor's N ote-I wish to thank my staff for their spirit of co-operation. They all deserve praise for the work and time they have put into this book. This publication is put out on alternate Fridays under the supervision of L. P. Dudley. The paper strives to acquaint the school with all the ac- tivities and events here at Itasca. Lots of news and bits of gossip are put together in such a way as to make an exceedingly successful little newspaper. The ltascan is an important factor in the college life. Harry Thayer and Lonzo Wilmot were the fall editor and assistant editor, respectively. In the spring Durant Barclay, better known as Bud, and Dolores Madson succeeded them. It is both popular and educational, in that it trains the college students to be leaders and advisers of the various youth activities, such as Boy Scouts, Sirl Scouts, Campfire Girls, etc. The class, which meets once a week, is taught by Mr. Dutter and Doctor XVillman. At almost ev- ery meeting a lecture is given by a guest speaker. RHO NU RHO For being the most enjoyed club in the school, the Rho Nu Rho is famous. The members are the students who live outside of the district, and they hail from many sections of the coun- try - east, south, west and north. The club has had many good times this year. Mrs. Webster sponsors the Rho Nu Rho, and Dwight Stone is president, Ellsworth Holycross, the vice-presi- dent, and Margaret Myers, the secre- tary-LIQHSUFCF. First row: L. Sweet, C. At the beginning of the quarter, the new men were ushered into the organization by an initiation followed by a formal banquet. The first event of the fall social season was the Homecoming Dance, which followed the Duluth football game. The dance, held in the gymnasium, was very successful, and was climaxed by the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, Nancy Nelson. The contest had been sponsored by the Bachelors. Nancy was crowned by the presi- dent of the club, George Prazich. The Kappas suffered a defeat to the Bachelors at the Whist Tourna- ment, but the girls still had a good time. Saint Pat had his inning when the Bovey Hall blossomed into a display of green. There were shamrocks everywhere, and the college lads and lassies did not mind the wearin' of the green that night. True to tradition and to their calling, the Bachelors held several stag affairs. The group from each town gave a smoker, and most of these for men only parties were held at the library club rooms. BASKETBALL Greenways basketball team came through the '39-'40 season surprisingly well. In 25 contests they were victors 15 times. A tough schedule was lined up for them, with games with many out district teams. They played inconsistent basketball at times, holding victories over Grand Rap- ids and Buhl, yet being defeated by some smaller schools. In the district 28 tournament Greenway defeated Hill City 57-26 the first night, while in the semifinals defeated Grand Rapids 34-27, only to lose to Chisholm in the finals 35-48. Prospects for the '40-'41 basketball season are very good, with Peter Predovich, Paul Hitch- cock, Bill O'Melia, Bernard Kocian, and Joe Karakash returning lettermen. The B team, made a record to be proud of playing 15 games, only losing 3 games. This indicates that there are competent reserves coming up. SENIOR CLASS PLAY In A House Like This , the Senior Class Play for 1940, was the story of an average American family with a son who had an inflamed attachment to the theatre. Shirley Leroux, as the sharp grandmother. and Clara Gareri, the energetic daughter. played the principal female parts extremely well, opposite them were Harold Morken and Kenneth Johnson as the leading actors. The entire cast Worked hard with Mr. Dudley as director, and turned in an excellent performance. GREENWAY'S 4-H CLUB Greenways 4-H club has been a successful organization in spite of the fact that it is a fairly recent group. The girls of past years have won many trips to state and national contests. Please help us choose the fruitful ones That grow up into Thy air. What foolish things we mortals be- Like travellers in a mist Who lose the road, and take the ditch And never more are missed. So, in these few and simple lines, And with this thought in mind- A fool can write these simple words, But only God can write the time- On the threshold of the world, We beseech Thee, show us Thy face, Let us have knowledge and wisdom, And give us strength to keep the pace. The Tick of the Clock Everything can be stopped But time on its march. No man has ever been so bold That can time hold-- Hark! Listen! Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Everything can be stopped Burt time can not be locked. We have just a day, starting at dawn, And then, time marches on- Hark! Listeng Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Hans Knopp Everything can be stopped, But the ticking of the clock. Ticking away, The hours of the day- Hark! Listen! Tick, tock. Tick, tock. SULLIVAN Itasca Junior College Itasca County Named after the famous historic source of the Mississippi, is truly the headwaters of opportunity for a large number of Itasca county boys and girls. WHY I LIKE ITASCA I like Itasca because I have found a spirit of friendship and cooperation among students and teachers - a close unity that I do not believe is found in most schools.. It has en- deared the place to me . -Willard Allin. I like Itasca because of its understanding and sympa- thetic teachers and because it gave me time, without loss of time, to make up my mind just what senior college I would attend . -Catherine Hopfinger. Four years of high school made me realize the need for more complete general knowledge. Itasca offered just what I wanted at a price I could afford to pay . -Roland Sawdey. I came to Itasca because it was fully accreditedg be- cause it was small enough for personal contact with teachers and fellow students and because it presented a financial economy that I couldn't afford to neglect . -Lois Enstrom. Itasca has meant much to me because I came here to school during a time when I wasn't sure just what type of work I wanted to follow. Itasca pointed the way . -Donald Harrington. Ninteenth Opening H.
