A conflict between Gene Garrison and his father is seen in the first act when Gene meets his parents at the train station. Margaret and Tom Garrison have just ar- rived home from a vacation which was taken for their health. Unfortunately, the vacation does not restore Mrs. Garrison's health. She dies soon after her retum. The daughter, Alice, arrives home after her mother's death. Alice's homecoming creates tension because her father banished her from the family for marrying a Jew. This banishment is an example of Tom Garrison's un- reasonableness which causes a disagreement between Gene and Alice. Alice tells Gene he no longer has to be the dutiful son. Finally, Gene realizes the truth. The more he tries to be patient with his father, the more his father rejects him. Tom's conduct triggers an argument. Disgusted, Gene moves to California.
