Lois Eaton Space Lawyer Page Thirty-Five Class Histortf In September of 1953 a group of fledgling cadets entered the space academy at the corner of Reade and Fifth and received the title, Class of ' 57. The space- lings blasted off to a good start when they elected Edwin Wilkerson as their X-57 space ship pilot. John Ed Arnold, co-pilot; Nancy Harris, inter-stellar log keeper; and Madelyn Coleman, star dust strong box keeper served the class well that year. No sooner had the cadets elected officers than they were hard at work with the Freshmen Follies. None will forget Judy Corbett ' s solo under the big Harvest Moon ' nor Nancy Brown ' s pigtails streaming behind her as she ran across the stage. Hugh Duncan, Nancy Ann Hoot, Angus Duff, and Nancy Harris gave the junior academy commencement speeches that year; and Alice Lee Edwards won the National Honor Society award. Edwin Wilkerson and John Ed Arnold again took lead as pilot and co-pilot during the cadets ' sophomore year. Sharon Wilfong and Angus Duff completed the officer slate, and away they went with the theme Romance at the Coronation Ball. A big hit at the floorshow was Mickie Sumrcll ' s solo. Space cadet officers for the junior year were Jerry Howell, pilot; Orman Whichard, co-pilot; Madelyn Coleman, interstellar log keeper; and Dennis Harris, Stardust strong box keeper. The entire class slaved away with the planet-to-planet magazine sales, but the S787 was worth the effort. Frances Smith, Laura McArthur, and Judy Corbett became high salesmen. Of course, the Junior-Senior was the highlight for the class that year. Mickie Sumrell took over as overall chairman of the affair. The Stork Club was selected as the theme. Doris Davenport was selected banquet chairman and Betty Sugg dance chairman. As the diffierent committees blasted off, the sweat began to pour. But then, night, music, a banquet, parties, a dance — Jimior-Senior was at hand. A true side-splitter was the Kewpie Doll chorus line; then in strong contrast to the awkward antics of the Kewpie Dolls, came Memrie Mosier ' s solo dance. The next morning found every one by Jupiter s sea; House parties galore! Madelyn Coleman headed the list as chief marshall. Lois Eaton, Judy Corbett, Laura McArthur, Mickie Sumrell, Alice Lee Edwards, Doris Davenport, and Nancy Ann Hoot completed the list of marshalls. Frances Smith and Nancy Brown were selected to take over the posts as co-editors of THE GREEN LIGHTS the following year. The glory of being seniors tasted sweet as the cadets entered their final year at the space academy. Jerking underclassmen away from the water fountains served as the favorite pastime as Edwin Wilkerson, Wayne Eidson, Mickie Sumrell, and Kenny Whichard led the cadets through a hard and fast year of mild ex- plosions in the chemistry lab and not-so-mild ex- plosions in English 12. Jerry Howell was Student Council president. Kenny Whichard and Mickie Sumrell headed the TAU staff. The class was well represented in the National Honor Society. Lois Brown was elected homecoming queen along with Benny Perry and Nancy Ann Hoot as Mr. and Miss School Spirit. The cadets enjoyed the hospitality of the juniors at the Junior-Senior. Then the climax— GRADUATION. The memory will al- ways live in the thoughts of the Class of ' 57. Lining up in caps and gowns, they slowly paraded across the stage, some happy, some sad, but all leaving four years of life in the halls and rooms so often loved, so often cured, so often laughed in, so often cried in. Those four years will never be forgotten. It will keep you, in your older years, From getting out of touch With friends that you have made In this year that ' s just gone by. This book will remind you of the teachers Who helped the time to fly. That we took a long, long time, Wasn ' t because we were lazy; But in our attempts to finish this book We practically went crazy. So take good care of this great book And don ' t you ever lose it. Because who knows? Who can tell?
