HISTORY Wlth sadness and Joy mtermmgled we walk across the stage toward those long antlclpated KIIDIOITIHS Even though we have all put on a big show about how much fun xt was going to be to leave ye ole prlson It can never be Sald that everyone of our good times and most important our achievements aren t heavy on our mlnds , , I well remember back in the e1ghth grade how fearful and shy we were frightened by upper classmen and tremhllng at a glance given by a senlor Thls stage lasted for a year By the tlme we reached the ninth grade we had become quite veteran l1ke and bold and now felt 1t our task to be superior ln the fact of the lowly elghth graders At our first class meeting a new and different thmg to us there was the tense excltment of the battle of battles Lyman Ormond Margaret Fleming Augusta Overton and Johnny Aman came through to lead our class through the year I never w1ll forget the way our advlsor Mrs Bowen helped us with our dance that year and wlth her suggestions we chose to follow the tradltlonal theme of Sprlng Follles for the affair Decked wlth pine trees and flowers the whole audltorxum seemed to reek wlth the spring season It was a blg moment for me and every other freshman when we graduated from Junlor hlgh to senior hlgh When the sophomore year rolled around we had learned pretty much about what was going on all around us the facts about apple polishing and what was and what wasn t tolerated 1n C HS In other words we freely lived up to the definltion of a sophomore for wise fooli Aside from the lighter 'Ind more trxvlal thlngs we learned lmportant essentlal thlngs when we led by Augusta Overton Margaret Fleming Janet Waters and Floyd Hendrix had to work so hard to make the Coronatlon Ball a success Nevertheless none of us begrudged our laborlous task when our 'ludltorlum was transformed 1nto a mght club on that all important mght Our theme was carrled through with a torch slnger dances and a skit Extra currlcular act1v1t1es became a must and through these assoclatlons our leaders were 6St3b1lShed I suppose our next step toward commencement that of the Junior year was the most eventful and buslest Orderlng class rlngs selling magazlne subscriptions our first Junlor semor banquet and dance all made up part of the restless nine months Our class rings were ruby stones set 1n gold with a picture of G H S on one slde and the town hbrary on the other Perhaps those of us that traded our llngs w1th a hoy or girl frlend thought we were the only appreclatlve ones but those that had rings that fitted for some reason also began holdlng their rlng finger IH a more COIISDICIOUS manner When a group of us remmlsce we st1ll proudly talk about the fact that we led by the sales manshlp of Lyman Ormond and Lewls Howe sold more magazlne subscriptions than any class before us Orlglnatlng from a bram storm of I ewls Howe and a great amount of toil put out by many of us the Junlor senlor arrlved in full fashion depleting a Dreamers Jungle Lions and tigers monkeys and even p1nk elephants peeped out from behlnd the many bushes and the real 1st1c pool with a few lazy alllgators floating around proved refreshing When I thmk about it now it seems that the four members due much of the credit for this perfect affair were our class officers Rodney Fulcher Margaret Fleming Janet Waters and Joel Bunch We finally made it up to the last rung of the ladder toward graduation as we took that 1m portant position of being senlors Somehow we didn t feel a b1t more dlgmfied but whenever there was work to be done we settled down and completed It Our first project was that of bulldmg up our treasury by selling stationery In celebration of the yuletlde we presented a Christmas play in chapel at whlch tlme we presented our yearly g1fts to W1ll1e LaUna and Curtls our Janitors The most lmportant of our undertak1ngs of the year was the Tau and through the hard work of the annual staff led by Ann McCrary as edltor ln chief and Floyd Hendrlx as buslness manager this publication was made posslble Chosen to lead our class through all these happenlngs of the ultlmate veal were Lew 18 Howe Milton Foley Barbara White and Joel Bunch The ent1re graduating class threw HS1d6 all thoughts of work and went to the x ast number of partles glven them on Senior Day Cllmaxxng this day there was Awards Night and accompanying the awards the seniors presented a drama Well here we are tonight leaving behind Greenvllle Hlgh School but alw ays we will possess memorles of a momentous hlgh school career Page Twenty Three GARRIS
