Dedicated to MRS. CLEM B. UTLEY Mrs. Clem Bridges Utley was one of the very finest people with whom I have ever come in contact. She was a great person. She was great because of her great character. She was a person of absolute mental and moral integrity. She was a straight thinker and, therefore, lived straight. She possessed one of the keenest intellects I have ever contacted. With her piercing insight into all problems she could easily remove whatever was unnecessary and of no value from her thinking and go straight to the heart of the problem. If she had cared anything about self glory and about herself, she could have been a great authoress or a great newspaper woman or magazine writer. The reason she never went into those other fields for her own sake was that she was always thinking of other people. She felt that her first and perhaps only obligation was to others. As a teacher she never drove; she always led. She was a rare combination as a teacher. She could teach English; she could teach mathematics; she could teach Latin; she could teach journalism; she could teach them all successfully; therefore, she was one of the most versatile teachers whom I have ever known. Her influence will be felt in Greenville and in Greenville High School as long as there is a Greenville. To my way of thinking, the best way of honoring Mrs. Utley, now that she is gone, is for every person connected with the Greenville High School to try to do some of the things that she would like for us to do if she were here. Some of the things that she stood for are absolute honesty in thinking and in acting, scholarship of the highest type, self control, courage, and gentleness of spirit. by J. H. Rose, Supt.
