In 1948 the students decided they needed a way to help pre- serve their memories of Green- ville High School, so the senior class of 1949 published the first yearbook entitled The Pirate.” There has been a year- book published every year since with the exceptions of 1952 and 1953. By the mid-fifties the need for additional space had forced the construction of three addi- tions to the school. The first was a vocational building which provided students with the chance to learn such skills as homemaking and agricul- ture. It was the first of its kind in the county. Two new class- rooms were added to the northeast side of the main building and a new gymnasium was constructed. (Cont. on page 6) Portable classroom cm lyu ulsUmS pctst mti. 3 Gymnasium

y UtonCHteS Greenville High School has seen many changes in its 54 years of existence. The growth and development of the school has played a major role in the lives of those who have been associated with it. Greenville High School, as an institution of secondary education, produced its first graduate, Edwin Browning, Sr., in 1926. Alton Wentworth was principal at this time. The year of 1927 brought about many new develop- ments, the primary one being the construction of a new high school building. At this time the Board of Public Instruction consisted of J. E. Hardee, A. D. Reams, and B. M. Kent; T. C. Simms was county superin- tendent; and the Board of Trus- tees was composed of J. B. Bird, J. Vickers, and Jesse W. Bishop. The first PTA was organized that year with Mrs. Ruth Reams as president. Later in a PTA meeting the first two graduating classes selected the school mascot, a pirate, and the school colors, purple and gold. The first class to graduate from the new building was in 1929. A lunchroom was opened in 1931 as a soup kitchen. One- half bottle of milk, a bowl of soup, and a package of crack- ers were served for a dime. PRINCIPALS 1925-1980 Alton H. Wentworth 1925-27 J. A.
