Um des Sports have always played an important part in the lives of the GHS students. For over twenty years basketball was the primary sport, and both the boys and girls enjoyed the thrill of competition. When the school was first completed, all the basketball games were played outdoors. Later they were moved indoors to the present-day library until the construction of the new gym- nasium in 1955. The most impressive basket- ball team of the early years was the team of 1942-43. The town and school were ecstatic about their small-town team and its accomplishments. This team finished an unprecedented season by winning every game and went undefeated to the state basketball finals in Day- tona Beach. The team was matched against Homestead, and everyone was crowded around the telegraph office at the depot awaiting the results of the game. Basketball team. 1942 Basketball team, 1944 10

Basketball team. 1943 Basketball team. 1945 The Pirates lost, but it was still a major accomplishment since in 1942 there were only two school classifications as compared to today's four. Mr. J. Donald Cates (principal) was head coach at this time, but much credit for this fine team must go to John Parker. The members of this team were as follows: Jasper Cox, Jr., Mor- ice Day, Joe Reams, John Kerr, James Taylor, Carl Woo- dle, James Harrison Page, Charles English, Albert Leg- gett, Jr., and Reid Powell. Joe Reams and James Harrison Page were chosen all-state, and Joe Reams was chosen honorary captain of the all- state team. (Cont. on page 92) Football team, 1957-58 umM happy cm L successful events.
