PtRATB 1980 Qn muMbUt kOckool Qnmwilh, florida Volunt 30 '' Uetn Ues'' y UtonCHteS Greenville High School has seen many changes in its 54 years of existence. The growth and development of the school has played a major role in the lives of those who have been associated with it. Greenville High School, as an institution of secondary education, produced its first graduate, Edwin Browning, Sr., in 1926. Alton Wentworth was principal at this time. The year of 1927 brought about many new develop- ments, the primary one being the construction of a new high school building. At this time the Board of Public Instruction consisted of J. E. Hardee, A. D. Reams, and B. M. Kent; T. C. Simms was county superin- tendent; and the Board of Trus- tees was composed of J. B. Bird, J. Vickers, and Jesse W. Bishop. The first PTA was organized that year with Mrs. Ruth Reams as president. Later in a PTA meeting the first two graduating classes selected the school mascot, a pirate, and the school colors, purple and gold. The first class to graduate from the new building was in 1929. A lunchroom was opened in 1931 as a soup kitchen. One- half bottle of milk, a bowl of soup, and a package of crack- ers were served for a dime. PRINCIPALS 1925-1980 Alton H. Wentworth 1925-27 J. A. By the mid-fifties the need for additional space had forced the construction of three addi- tions to the school. The first was a vocational building which provided students with the chance to learn such skills as homemaking and agricul- ture. It was the first of its kind in the county. Two new class- rooms were added to the northeast side of the main building and a new gymnasium was constructed. (Cont. on page 6) Portable classroom cm lyu ulsUmS pctst mti. 3 Gymnasium Uenoties The mid-fifties also brought the formation of the school’s first band in 1956 under the direction of Mrs. Doris Strong. This was only a stage band; however, a marching band was formed one year later under the direction of John Lauer. Its first performance was in Madi- son at the Madison vs. Green- ville football game. The joining of these two schools brought about the final addition to the school — two portable class- rooms beside the vocational building. For over twenty years basketball was the primary sport, and both the boys and girls enjoyed the thrill of competition. When the school was first completed, all the basketball games were played outdoors. Later they were moved indoors to the present-day library until the construction of the new gym- nasium in 1955. The most impressive basket- ball team of the early years was the team of 1942-43. The town and school were ecstatic about their small-town team and its accomplishments. This team finished an unprecedented season by winning every game and went undefeated to the state basketball finals in Day- tona Beach. The team was matched against Homestead, and everyone was crowded around the telegraph office at the depot awaiting the results of the game. Mr. J. Donald Cates (principal) was head coach at this time, but much credit for this fine team must go to John Parker. The members of this team were as follows: Jasper Cox, Jr., Mor- ice Day, Joe Reams, John Kerr, James Taylor, Carl Woo- dle, James Harrison Page, Charles English, Albert Leg- gett, Jr., and Reid Powell. Joe Reams and James Harrison Page were chosen all-state, and Joe Reams was chosen honorary captain of the all- state team. Leon Suggs coached both basketball and football until 1965 when Treadwell Sims took over. The 1966-67 Pirate football team completed the season with a 9-1 record, the best ever since 1948, being defeated only by Monticello. They also participated in the 1966 J.C. Bowl, but were defeated by Crawfordville 12-0. This out- standing team was coached by Wiley Selman, and Bill Kerr was the captain. Larry Brummitt took over as head football coach in 1967. Through his leadership football emerged into prominence with the Class A Pirate football teams becoming some of the Big Bend’s best. From 1969-72 the Pirates were ranked in the top ten each year in Class A and AA football and were invited to three straight bowls. 1967-68 Basketball Team 1966-67 Football Team M 1974-75 Basketball Team The 1971-72 team compiled a 9-1 record and competed in the Mullet Bowl in Port St. Joe. This team sported very impres- sive statistics in that they scored 348 points during the season and only gave up 35. The 1972-73 team ended the season 8-3, including a win in the Suwannee Bowl. These two teams produced five all-state players in Frank Laney, Donnie Miller, Lorenzo Blue, Hubby Brooks, and Johnny Williams. Coach Brummitt was suc- ceeded by Dennis Miller, John Greene, and Butch Alford. You have been a part of this tradition of excellence. The most important measure of a school is the direct influence that our graduates have and will have on the shaping of a better world. s It is my faith that our graduates will attempt great things and achieve great things, and that the world will be a better place because of you and Greenville High School. Hey where did all these guys come from? It was the last season ever for the Greenville High School Pirates. They got off to a very slow start, but on November 2 things began to change. The Pirates were playing their last game at home against the North Florida Christian Eagles, who were 7-0. The Pirate offense exploded in the first quarter by quickly scoring 13 points. Rocky Kinsey scored first by running a punt return 75 yards and then by kicking the extra point. The next score was a pass thrown to Eddie Blackshear, who ran 85 yards for the touchdown. The Pirates scored 14 more points before the game ended. The first score came from a 23-yard pass to Eddie Blackshear. Rocky Kinsey intercepted an Eagle pass and ran 55 yards for the next score. Both extra points were good and Green- ville finished their last home game with a score of 27-12. 53 Tonya Livingston Patricia Woodson Gloria Randall Leola Williams Linda Thomas VARSITY CHEERLEADERS 54 Gayle James — Sponsor 55 Alacia Hamrick GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Gloria Williams Robin Henderson Becky Day Robin Braswell Veta Evans Wanda Gallon Sharon Brooks Diane Williams Delores Fead Lisa Jackson Lanta Evans Julia Turner — Coach Look at Wanda go! During the week, students par- ticipated in the following activi- ties: Slave Day auction, Clown and Spirit Day, Color and Field Day, snake dance, parade, football game, and homecom- ing dance. The Pirates were considered the underdogs against the Clinch County, Georgia, Pan- thers, but they played a good and exciting game. Halftime was highlighted by the crown- ing of the 1979 Homecoming Queen, Kathy Thigpen. All throughout homecoming week, student and faculty par- ticipation was good. It was one of the most successful home- comings ever held. Isn't she cute? Kathy Thigpen, Homecoming Queen, stands proudly with her escort, Randy Powell. The main service that the Beta Club at GHS does is to maintain and run the pencil and paper machines in the library. These machines offer students a chance to purchase needed items at school. Editor Cindy Hamrick, Gina Braswell, and Mrs. Ann Brum- mitt spent four days in Tampa at a seminar sponsored by Tay- lor Publishing Co. and then the entire class attended a mini seminar in Tallahassee to acquire skills to produce a bet- ter yearbook. Some of the students were asked how they felt about attending the new Madison County High School next year, and here are their replies: STORMY GREENE — I think it's great. I'm really looking for- ward to going. EDDIE BLACKSHEAR — I feel it will be a big improvement for the students of Greenville and Madison High. DEAN TUTEN — I don't like the idea of going to Madison because it's too far and I'd rather stay in Greenville. TAMMY HARVILLE — I think it will be crowded, but I like the idea of all the new activities. ROCKY KINSEY — I think it will help the whole county. It gives a chance for a better educa- tion. LARRY KING — It doesn't mat- ter to me. BURT BISHOP — I feel it will be nice to get out of an old place and into a new place. PAM ARNOLD — I think it’s too far to ride; it should be halfway between Greenville and Madi- son. BARBARA WILLIAMS — I think it's a good idea because it gives students a chance to meet new people. ALONZO WILKERSON — I think it's too far to go, and we have to get up too early in the morning. It will be inconvenient for those participating in school activities. HENRY SCOTT — I like it; we ll have a better chance of an education. MEDGAR JAMES — I don't like it because there will be too many fights and not coopera- tion. ROBERTA HILLS — I don’t like it; I'd rather stay at Greenville High. OTTO TILLMAN — I think it’s all right. JOHN POWELL — My opinion is that we should remain at Greenville. GINA BRASWELL — I think that the curriculum is going to be twice as good as ours is now. It will give our students a better feeling toward facing college. THEO LIVINGSTON — I like it because we have a chance for a better education and because our school has seen its best days. TERESA HARVILLE — I think it will mean a better education for everyone and will also be a good experience to be able to meet new people after we all get used to the change. TIMMY McNUTT — I think it is going to be nice and I will meet more people. REGINA BLANTON — I think I am going to like it very much. DEAN BUCHANAN — I am excited about it because we will meet more people and have a better education. MARILYN BEATY — Oh! It's okay. MICHAEL THIGPEN — It's okay. I think we’ll have a better education. elaine mcintosh — i d rather stay at Greenville High School. ALFRED HARTS — I feel it's going to be well worth the effort because we ll have bet- ter sports, better education, and meet more people. JOHN ROLAND — I can't wait until we go because we'll have a better football and basketball team. 91 (Cont. from Page 11) In 1948 the first football team was formed, and J. C. Cartmill took over the coaching duties. Coach Cartmill came to Florida from Kentucky and was very influential in building the sports program in the late 40’s and early 50’s. He later devoted the majority of his time to being senior sponsor and annual sponsor, but he kept alive his interest in sports by being an assistant coach, coaching peewee teams, and refereeing. In the mid 50's both track and baseball teams were formed, but they were both dis- continued after a short time. Also, in the mid 50's the school colors were changed from pur- ple and gold to black and gold. The first outstanding football team was the team of 1957-58 under Coach Billy Beane. They completed the year with an 8-3 record including a win in the Pecan Bowl. One of the most valuable members of this team was Paul Andrews who went on to play football at FSU on a football scholarship. Other coaches in the 1929- 59 era who contributed greatly to the athletic program are as follows: Juanita Cooksey, John T. Flurnoy, Eulus Jones, Rudolph Rackley, Laura Bar- field Gulin, R. D. Binger, Fred M. Snyder, Emmette Wester, Jan Haines Brown, Leon Suggs, and Jearldene Stroud. 1958-59 Football Team 92 David Bailey Hubby Brooks (Cont. from Page 15) Wiley Selman became the head basketball coach in 1964 and the GHS basketball teams have never had a losing sea- son under his guidance. The Pirates have won nine district championships, eight out of eight conference champion- ships, and have gone to the state playoffs twice — in 1968 and in 1975. Two players were very out- standing on these two teams. Olan Nobles has the distinction of being the only Pirate to ever score 50 pts. in a single ball- game; he was also voted an all- state player in 1968. Spencer Reddick had the spectators in Jacksonville dumbstruck as he hit an 84-foot field goal in the state playoffs in 1975. Two Pirate junior varsity bas- ketball teams have gone unde- feated — the 1973-74 team coached by Dennis Miller (19- 0) and the 1978-79 team coached by Tom Williams (23- 0). (Cont. on Page 94) 1978-79 JV Basketball Team Girls'Track Team, 1971-72 93 (Cont. from Page 93) Track was rejuvenated in 1968 when Coach Larry Brum- mitt became the track coach. He revived interest in this important sport, and the Pirates excelled even without a track. There were only four members on the first track team — Jimmy Sherrod, Hugh Sherrod, Bobby Sherrod, and Mike McGuire. In 1970 Henry Reaves was the first Pirate to score a medal in a state track meet. The Pirates won six dis- trict championships during these years and had the honor of being the State Class A Track Champions in 1976. Coach Dennis Miller led the Pirates in 1974 and 1975. Coach Wiley Selman was head coach in 1976, and Roosevelt Parker took over in 1977. I hope that I have accomplished this goal and that the memories that are recorded in this book will live in our hearts and minds forever. May those of you who are entering the new high school, as well as those of you who are graduating or have already graduated from Greenville High School, remember this school as a happy and joyous place of the past. Finally, as editor, I would like to thank all the people who made this book a reality: Mr. Jim Odom, our Taylor Publishing Company Representative; Mrs. Ann Brummitt, a vers understanding and helpful sponsor; Mrs. Ruth Reams and the many others who supplier information and pictures for the historical section; and, finally, all the dedicated staff mem bers who worked so diligently to produce this yearbook. Thank you and may God bless you. W4 Best wishes, ft ayvy rficJiJ FINAL EDITION
