At least once during this time a lasting impression is made. To one this may be only a subconscious touch, to another, a lasting glow. The impression is that shadow which GHS casts upon all who pass through her doors-a shadow of knowledge, achievement, democracy, spirit, and honor. It is a living, growing, omni-present thing. Because of it, students are imbued with responsi- bility, yet, they welcome it. Living and working under this phantom of greatness, they struggle and fight to attain their goals. And yet, perhaps un- known to them, this shadow becomes a part of their being, urging them ever onward. Never- theless, the permanent shadow is left in the halls of GHS and in the hearts of her students as a link to the past and a promise of the future. table of contents . F -v... 5. .9 u 5 ., - . Moore's mighty Red Raiders of T958 lived up to tradition and over-powered the maiority of their op- ponents thus compiling the enviable record of 7 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie. The season was not without error, however, for after downing cross-town Carolina U9-l3l and Edwards High of Sumter 120-Ot, the boys from the school on the hill fell before the sting of Anderson's Yellow Jackets 122-T22 for the first time in eight years. Spirits weren't dampened for long though, and the fol- lowing week found the Mooremen fighting undefeated Gaff- ney to a close Q21-201 heartbreaking loss. Experience began to mold the boys into a tougher fighting machine, as defeat had definitely come too often already. lnvaded by the first place Greenwood Emeralds, the team shocked sports fans all over the state by decisively overpowering Coach Pinky Babb's squad 26-19. The following week GHS downed the Devildogs from Travelers Rest Q7-12D in a game which found the cross-county class A school doggedly contesting the might of AAA Greenville. Defeat, however, came again to haunt Greenville High footballers, U7-Ol, as swift backs and a hard charging line enabled the Dreher Blue Devils to extend their win streak to the most enviable in the state. Then, before a heartbroken homecoming crowd, insult was added to injury as the Raiders fell to the Caps of Columbia High T3-7. K bn ROWJ Charlie Wofford, Asa Gray, Steve Jones, Richard Kohn, Johnny Brown Billy Linn, Tommy Coan, Jimmy Kellett, Dirgen May, Emory Poole, Tommy Gibson Jerry Hooper, Roy Crisp, Pete Fayssoux, CFOURTH ROWD George Smith, Jimmy Smith Johnny Kendall, Tommy McNeill, Robert Gaskins, Jerry Hollingsworth, and Wayne Hudson. Coming into the home stretch, the Mooremen played one of their best games as they broke U4-T35 the 43 game win streak of touted North Augusta. Next the mighty squad from Daniel invaded Sirrine stadium and produced some of the most rugged competition the home team had faced as the score was held to a U3-131 tie. The Spartanburg forces didn't fare so well against the GHS team, for they fell Q28-OJ in one of the squad's most outstanding games of the year. Thanksgiving Day finally arrived and again Coach James A. Moore's charges defended their fine record against Coach Whitie Kendall's Golden Tornado from Parker. As tradition would have it, the stands slowly filled with exhuberant fans who were to see an overwhelming victory for GHS. From the opening whistle to the closing gun, domination of the game clearly fell to the Greenville eleven and when the dust had cleared and the last cheer had died, the scoreboard revealed a bruising, hard-earned C35-61 victory over the classic rivals. Such a win was a fit ending to a good season, not only in terms of the won-loss record, but also in terms of contribu- tions to clean, competitive athletics. Greenville High can al- ways be proud of the '58-'59 football season both on the field and in the stands where victory was the wish and sports- manship was the way.
