But for us, a spirit, an intangible, indefinable, undertone permeates our beloved - school on the hill and makes us proud to belong. lt is ever present in Leadership, which shows our con- tinuous hope of encouraging better citizens in our schools of today and our world of tomor- row, in Scholarship, which manifests our never-ending quest for knowledge and achievements, in Co-operation, which repre- sents our eagerness to help others, in Sports- manship, which depicts our persistent struggle for fairness in competitive activities, and in Recognition, which pictures the outstanding honors and fulfilled ambitions attained. The merging of these qualities into the true spirit of GHS is portrayed in the '58 Nautilus. g3. , l table of contents 1 5 lk x ' N L ! H' ' s a 5 . , , 6 x r h fi 'l i LQ . , A B 1 1 . The team excelled in hard running, savage blocking, and vicious tackling. GREENVILLE I3 ANDERSON 0 Eddie Scott Captain After a sluggish first half, the boys from the school on the hill, seemingly without effort, shut out the Yellow Jackets from Boys' High of Anderson, a win for the sixth consecutive year. GREENVILLE 7 GAFFNEY 6 Ray Parkins Captain Meeting the Gaffney Indians, the Reds confronted their first stiff competition of the '57 season. Neither team succeeded in scoring until the final quarter. The success in making the extra point resulted in the victory for the Mooremen. GREENVILLE 14 GREENWOOD I3 Temple Roane Captain Of all the games on the '57 schedule, the one that will never be forgotten was the encounter with the mighty Emeralds from Greenwood High school. Trailing most of the tilt, the Raiders bounced back to defeat their long- standing rivals for the first time in three years. GREENVILLE I9 GREENSBORO I3 Bobby Batson, Max McClain Captains Making their longest trip of the season, the Mooremen faced the Greensboro Whirlies on a rain-soaked field. The Raiders had to play heads-up football to put down the scrappy Greensboro eleven. GREENVILLE 20 DREHER 21 Billy Richardson Captain Winning every game so far-two by an extra point-, the Reds finally found themselves losing by the same decisive margin in a tough battle with the Dreher Blue Devils of Columbia. compiled a 7-2 record . GREENVILLE 29 WOODRUFF 21 Jimmy Reynolds Captain The Greenville High footballers handed the Woodruff GREENVILLE O PARKER 12 High Wolverines their only setback of the season in a Clay Jones, Johnny Nicol' gridiron clash that was highlighted by brilliant passing on t both sides. CUPlU 5 Thanksgiving da brought bitter disap ointment to Y P hundreds of Greenville fans as Parker downed GHS. Inter- cepted passes and a muddy field proved to be the decisive factors in the third straight win for the Mooremen's arch rivals. The Raider squad showed grit and determination GREENVILLE 25 WAl-HA'-LA 0 as they fought a losing battle. Bm Bannister The 7-2 record, compiled by the Greenville High school Red Raiders this season, illustrates the tremendous Captain school spirit. A soggy field failed to dampen the spirit of the homecoming crowd as the Raiders completely dominated the Walhalla Razorbacks. Coach Moore practically cleared the bench in an effort to hold the score down.
