Y 2 1 o If X ' fx N 14 Ja N THE FALL-The doors of the School on the Hill swing open and the students pour in, rejoicing to see their schoolmates, and slowly but surely, getting settled for what is known as the same ole grind. Football starts . . . pep meetings . . . and finally the day of all dayssthe day that our Red Raiders defeat Parkers Tornado. . . .After football, the school returns to normalcy . . . the leaves are turning, finally falling. N THE WINTER-Tlie cold winds from the North usher in another season, finding students at Greenville High most active. The holidays are filled with merriment .... All want snow after those first few flakes .... Croans are heard over the first semester report cards . . . a new group is established in Forum . . . sophomores seem to be finding out what makes the school tick. ln general, thc winter is cold physically, but, mentally, it is warm and friendly for G. H. Sfers. N TIIE SPRING-The campus takes on new life .... No school in the land is more active than ours .... Student body and class elections . . . senior class play . . . tournaments . . . honor exams . . . graduationll But this busy season makes these final moments the most enjoyable of the whole year. Then comes the last . . . some thinking of their vacation plansg others looking through their Nautilus . . . and everybody wishing that the end were not quite so near. SUCK MOORE Basketball Coach Football Line Coach BILLY BAILEY Head Manager 'wg Q Q CIAPTAIN STEVE Hooks Most Valuable 1942 Raider All-Southern SPARTANBURG CLUNIE AS HOOKS SCORES RESUME 1942 SEASON ir Greenville lligh's football candidates worked long and laboriously under the vigilant eyes of Coaches Speer and Moore for a full month, before taking to the gridiron of Sirrine stadium on the night of September 25. Some twenty-five boys had made the grade and received a uniform for the opening hattle. The class B champions of the Palmetto state, the Saluda Indians, were the first eleven to test the strength of the l9-12 Pied Raiders. There were only three lettermen on this Electric club, but the hustling lad who was only a raw recruit a month previously had been con- ditioned into a seasoned player when the Red and Whites ran easily over the title holders to the tune of 45-7. From the opening whistle of the first game, all the G. H. S. fans knew that for the '42 season Skippers Speer and Moore would have a team on the field that knew not the meane ing of quit but one that would rush the opponent until he was forced to yield. This kept bearing the truth for in the second tilt the Dynamo breezed through its Old rival Easley 4040. From these two tussles two things were delinitely brought out: that the chief Raider might was in a deadly accurate aerial attack, with Leonard Riddle and Dick Hendley on the slinging line and Tommy Simpson and Eddis Freeman on the receiving end, and that they possessed one of the South's greatest line 'husters' in Steve Hooks. These theories almost blew up, for in the next clash the Speermen renewed hostilities with an old foe, Anderson. The Yellow Jackets were having their best year, and were determined to repay the Greenvillians for their past lickings. This they did, for when the linal gun sounded the Electrics were on the bad end of the count 13-7. The Dynamo jumped back into the win column the following Friday by barely edging the always tough Charleston Bantams 6-3. The Raiders looked bad in this tilt but proved that they still had what it takes to gain a victory. l311N I llllJS0Nf71l1L'lilL' IX1.-XRVIN l3Hr'l'1sfIfm1 XfVlNm ' I0llNS0N7CjL'lIff.'V ' my I. NV. The Wades fell 25-6. This left everything but the big game, the Thanksgiving classic with the Golden Tornado from Parker High. The Raiders had the best record with six wins and three losses but any- thing is liable when the city rivals lock horns on Turkey Day. And everything did happen and fast. First the Greenvillians took the lead and the Purple and Gold blew back and jumped to the lead. The Parkerites barely held this 18-12 margin until late in the final stanza when a pass from Hendley to Simpson and a conversion by Charles Johnson skyrocketed the Red and VVhites ahead. VVhi1e the Parker machine collapsed the Dynarno gained momentum by reeling off another touchdown to make the final score read Greenville 25-Parker 18. Thus for the thirteenth occasion the Red Electrics had beaten the Tornado. RESUME 1943 BASKETBALL SEASON , CPicture5 on Pages 12041215 ln the first dawning days of this year, with the war, priorities, rationing, and the like, casting a dark cloud on the future for the '43 basketball season, Athletic Director Speer and Cage Skipper S1ick'7 Moore faced the grimmest task they had ever encountered in their long coaching careers. Using the watchful waiting policy, nevertheless Mentor Moore issued the call for the annual crop of basketball material. From this bunch of some seventeen lads the diminutive Moore worked hard and finally perfected a machine that was setting a terriflic pace at thc close of the campaign. By putting on a tremendous drive after their first stinging defeat by Parker. Greenville High's Red Raiders came back, not to lose a game and cinch their third straight Palmetto state championship when the Red and White banner waved victorious over the rabble heap of the once great Parker Tornado cage machine the night of March 5. Leonard Sparky , Riddle was the real pillar of the great mm '43 combine. Sending well over a hundred points through the mesh, K'Sparky left a record for lire and dash that well lives up to the famous Riddle name. Backed by the finest squad in the South mainly D. Ashmore, Eddis Fireball Freeman, and newcomer Jack Pruitt, Coach Moore possessed a bunch of cagesters that wou1c1n't stop until the final whistle. A11 in all, the Raiders really had a great season. A1- though their schedule was full of big name quintets, the Red and VVhites waded through a list of teams that was hard to stop by anyone's five, with a record of 14 triumphs and three losses for a .824 percentage figure.
