NAUTILUS BIDS ADIEU TO GREAT EDUCATOR '-'wp-..,, hree likenesses of Dr. Janies L. Mann, beloved superintendent of the eity schools, who is retiring this year following 2-1 years ot faithful service. At, left, in a. leisurely pose on the port-h of his ottiec building' on VVestfield s eetg center, a. formal pose of the great educator, at right, a warm hand- c asp with his successor, Mr. W. l+'. Loggins. IHIL Lllfli OF DR. 1. I,. MANN is a brilliant as well as a colorful one. lt is one that should inspire the thousands ot students who are yet to enter the portals ot the city schools. llorn in Abbeville county in 1872, he had little early school- ing. However, he must have been self- educated and ambitious, as he entered col- lege as a freshman at the tender age of 12, and, even more miraculous than that, became a full-fiedged teacher in a small country school at the age of 15. Dr. Mann continued his search for a higher education, as he now holds degrees from Emory university, University of Heidelberg in lierlin, Germany, and Uni- versite de Grenoble in France. The young South Carolinian soon was convinced that school Work was his life's vocation. Thus, he served capably as superintendent of the Florence tSouth farolina1 city schools for 14 years, held the same position at Greensboro tNorth Carolina1 for six years, finally coming to Greenville in the fall of 1916, in which position he has remained for nearly a quarter of a century. He blazed the path of G. H. S. annuals of later years by starting in 1916 the first high-school yearbook in the state, 'l'he Mountaineer, illustrious forerunner of THE NAUTILUS at G. H. S. VVhen the retiring school head came to this city, he found only ten grades. 'lihe so-called high school ot' a few pupils was llf1llSCf1 on tlle top fiooi' of llle old litlildilig, located on Westflelcl street at the point where the junior high now stands. ln addition to the high school grades, a full grammar school was also operated in the plant. During that same first year, he in- stalled an eleventh grade, with a senior class enrollment of only seven. His faculty at that time was composed of only 15 members, four of whom are still teaching in the senior high. 'l'his month he graduates nearly -11.111 seniors from senior high, making over 3111111 G. H. S, students to whom he has presented diplomas. Wliat a glorious record! ln addition to all his other at- tainments, Dr. Mann inaugurated the first free text bool: system in the state here in Greenville, a system that is still very much in vogue and which is envied by other schools in larger cities. And so, the 19411 NAU'l'1l,U5, the last annual Whose administrative pages will be graced by Dr. James l,. Mann, wishes to bid good-bye and good luck to its god- father May the years be good to youl We feel that we can never repay you for the many things you have so willingly done for us. G. H. S. will never forget you, Ur. Mann. We pray that you will never forget us. 13
