MQ. wmv ,4 aul?aealtzf During a school year a student spends just about as much time with his teachers and school adminis- trators as with his parents. Next to the home the school contributes more to the maturing of youth than any other institution. It is therefore imperative that the teachers and administrators be a group of individuals with su- perior education, unquestionable morals, emotional stability, and a definite yearning to be dedicated to youth. Greenville is extremely foitunate in having men and women in the teaching profession with these qualities. We express our thanks for their dedica- tion, and may we through our lives remember them and their efforts. 1 , ,Q 'ff diff' , ff ll' ' s , rf' V . ,,f A 1 1 lj !f X X . ', P , , - , N0 , fi? Of course, following them immediately are the wild cries, uYeah '61l', and '6Yeah ,62! Yes, there are definitely classes in dear old G.H.S. Each class sponsors its own activities which are usually the biggest events in the year to the mem- bers of' that class. Whether it is parties, dances, proms, or even Sneak Days, there is always a lot of work to be done in putting them on, but the end results are well worth the work. Even though each person possesses a loyalty to- ward his own class, he holds an even bigger loyalty to his school. L'Yeah, Greenville! 1 Z W ,H ..... . L K x 1' . x Mfta, , . At first they wandered to and fro trying to find the right class- room. Within a few days everyone knew what he was doing and where he was going. Out of the class of 210, Larry Myers was elected president, Joyce Holthouse, vice-presidentg Buddy Ogle, secretary, Ron Aten, treasurer, Collette Spidel, reporter. Homer Huston served as head class sponsor. They began the year with a picnic, which almost all attended. This was to serve as an ice-breaker. After roasting many weiners together, all had found many new friends. By October most of the Freshman girls asked boys to go with them to the annual G.A.A. dance. Then they all anxiously awaited the night of their first formal dance which was only two months away. Near the end of the year a stamp drive was held, and all Freshmen scampered about the town searching for stamps. Unfortunately, there was no freshman party because the money obtained from the stamps wasn't sent in time. Now they have completed their first year and are looking forward to their second year, a little wiser, a little more eager. 944092614 FIRST ROW: President Larry Myers, Vice-President Joyce Holthouse, Reporter Collette Spidel. The girls managed to ask the boys to the annual C.A.A. dance around the first of November, quite a change from their Freshman year. They elected Doug Shellhass for their president, Bonnie Zechar, vice-president, Sue Straker, secretary, Gail Grimes, treasurer, Barbara Browne, reporter. In February they presented their first play under the direction of Fred lVIcKee. It was entitled, uFather's Been to Maisy, which was an interplanetary success. In May they chose a Hawaiian theme' for the prom, honoring our fiftieth state. The annual Junior-Senior Prom is given for the Seniors by the Juniors each year. The decorations were very unusual and original. The waving palm trees, the beautiful murals, and the grass hut which served as the refreshment stand all added to the Hawaiian atmosphere. Everyone had a delightful evening dancing to the enchanting music of Bobby We1'tz. As twelve o,clock sounded all left to go to all-night parties and the traditional prom night. 66444 Offckew Yr 'wgmv . FIRST ROW: President Dong Shellhaas. Reporter Barbara Browne. During the year they enjoyed heing the 'colder liidsi' around the school. As the year passed. the Seniors hecamc more and more independent until the teachers could hardly put up with their pranks and nonsense. But even though they were carefree alvout many things, they had their moments of seriousness. As each event of the year occurred they suddenly felt the sadness o luunving that they were participating in these things for the last time. ln the fall was the hig formal C.A.A. Dance, then the Wiiitel' Musical, the Spring Musical, the T.C.C. Dance, and the various installations ofthe officers for next f year. Uh, yes, there was Sneak Day when all the Seniors HSllllCliH away from school and spent the day in the park fishing themselves out of the lagoons and playing all sorts of games. Wliat a paniel A few weeks later saw them all enjoying t last high school prom. How wonderful it was dancing in the arms of their favorite guys or gals! The next week they presented the Sohdlssenilxly of l959. The lnunor of those Seniors! But they have their serious moments, and as heir they saw each other in their caps and gowns, the tears of happiness and sadness hegan to slowly fall for they knew that they were leaving this small world to enter the large competitive world as college students, as business men and women, and as homemakcrs. Yes, the Class of l959 offieially left Greenville High School June 2, when they received their diplomas at Commeneemen the .four happy years spent there will live on in their hearts forever. t, hut 66444 Offlcow FIRST ROW: President Roger Marker, Secretary Martha Brumbaugh. Such things as music appreciation, in- terest in the out-of-doors and sports, techniques of newspaper writing, or even methods of reclining as the Romans did are best learned -through the work of the school clubs and organizations. These organizations are designed to unite stu- dents who have interests along the same lines into working groups. There are more than 20 of these groups, both large and small, in G.H.S. that have many activities and projects making them definitely worthwhile. Because of organizations Greenville High School is an extremely busy place, but Without them school just wouldn,t be the same. itz , gf , ,fr ff. i ' in t - X . But a good sports pro- gram offers much more than fun. lly participating in sports a player learns to take orders and carry them out to the best of his ability, to think quickly and act decisively, to know the meaning of discipline, to work with others as a team, to smile when things go against his team, to respect and demand respect of his fellow teammates, and to make real and lasting friendships with squad members. The spirit behind the teams is the student body. Without their interest and support, sports wouldn't be very enjoyable to the players. Imagine an ex- citing basketball game without loud cheers and screams of enthusiasm from the cheering sections. Yes. high school sports are geared so that both the players and thc spectators enjoy themselves im- mcnsely and take a greater pride in their school. 71:5 :wit 'r' . s i. 42 ,r I Rx D I K. wt V-'jf' ETA, ' X ff H, '- Xia' fa r-k V KY,- Snr . 2 I ' 9 f 'it f i 1 tpil ,.', i ., hib, IA Qlffl -fad? Since an annual is a memory book, it should capture the students as they really are. This section shows the informal side of the students of Greenville High through candid shots taken in classes, in the halls, at assemblies, at games, and at special events like dances and Home- coming. Yes, the '59 Chief is finally completedl It was a great amount of work, hut we think it was worth it and hope that you do too. Of course, we never would have com- pleted the first page if it weren't for the help and constant urging of Mrs. Criner. Miss Day also aided us a great deal with our magazine drive in the fall. Another person whom we couldnit have gotten along with- out was Dan Miley, the guy who took all of our crazy Candid Cameran shots without one single gripe. Working right along with Dan was the Osborne Photographic Studios, who did an excellent joli with the photo- graphic work. Need we say that this hook wouldnlt have lieen possible without the Taylor Publishing Company. They have given us help all through the year and have tried, right along with us, to make this the liest Chief ever. To these special people, as well as to the administration and faculty of Greenville High School, the 1959 Annual Staff says a warm Thank youf, Yes, the Chief is finished and we're fin- ished too.
