Duncan R. W. Duncan has served as superintendent of Greenville Schools for the past six years, and his duties encompass many responsibilities, some of which are school organization, finance, adult and student personnel problems, curric- ulum development, lunch room management, pupil transportation, school con- struction, public relations and instruction. Mr. Duncan graduated from Ohio State University with Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees. Before coming to Greenville Mr. Duncan was elementary school principal, high school teacher, high school principal, and superintendent of schools at West Milton, Ohio. Altogether Mr. Duncan has been engaged in the teach- ing profession for twenty-three years. Page Twelve High School Priiicijml Garland W. Kemper Garland W. Kemper, principal of Greenville High School, has served in this capacity for three years. Prior to his coming to Greenville, Mr. Kemper acted as principal at Ludlow, Kentucky, and Cynthiana, Kentucky. Mr. Kemper was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western State College, Bowling Green, Kentucky, and obtained his Master of Arts degree in Education at the University of Kentucky. Also at the University of Kentucky, Mr. Kemper completed two additional years of graduate work. Mr. Kemper's duties as principal include administrative and supervisory func- tions of all students, teachers, and non-teaching personnel. Board 0 f Education Left to right: Mr. Richard Hole, Dr. F. H. Cox, Dr. R. O. Wilson, Mrs. Hugh Tearney, and Mr. Robert Taylor. The Greenville Board of Education is made up of five members whose duties include supervising the care of the city's public school buildings and grounds, setting up the schools, curricula, choosing Well qualified teachers, and selecting textbooks. Clerk Robert Kolp Robert Kolp is Clerk of the Greenville City Board of Education. He keeps min- utes of Board meetings and handles all communications of the Board. The clerk keeps accounts of all district school funds, signs checks, and handles pay vouchers. He gives monthly statements to the Board concerning receipts and expenditures. Act- ing as secretary-treasurer of the Board, Mr. Kolp sends all required reports to the State Department of Education. Page Seventeen Dean 0 f Girls Kathryn Griner Kathryn Griner, as Dean of Girls, teaches freshman orientation, sophomore guidance, and senior vocation classes for girls. She also keeps the girls' daily attendance records, and helps in high school scheduling. Advisor on the Stu- dent Council and a member of the Principal's Advisory Council are other posts held by the Dean of Girls. Mrs. Griner was graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with majors in English, history, and foreign languages. She also received a Master of Arts degree in French from the University of Michigan, making a total of six years of college and university training. At present Mrs. Griner is taking courses in high school guidance and counseling. Page Eighteen i , , 35 Dean of Boys james Holzapfel James Holzapfel serves as Dean of Boys. In this capacity he conducts fresh- man orientation, sophomore guidance, and senior vocation classes for boys. He takes care of the daily records of boys' attendance, and assists in schedule making. The Dean of Boys is a Student Council advisor and is on the Prin- cipal's Advisory Council. In the senior magazine sale, the class broke all sales records. The magazine sales provide money for publishing THE CHIEF. Mrs. Kathryn Griner acted as head sponsor for the class of 1957. As juniors, the class chose Larry Franklin as its president. Miss Catharine Boyer acted as class sponsor for the junior class. Riddle Me Riches, a three- act comedy, was the junior play. Miss Patricia DeHayes directed the two-night sellout. The juniors planned Fantasyland, the junior-senior prom. As jun- iors, the class ordered and received their class rings. Alohal' was the title of the sophomore class dinner-dance. Class president was joe Hufnagle and Miss Ethel Hathaway was head sponsor. In September of 1953, the class of 1957 began its high school career. As freshmen, the class party was named Buttons and Bows and Mrs. Leah Huston served as head class sponsor. Joe Hufnagle acted as freshman class president. After your years, the class of 1957 leaves Greenville High School with many memories. These years will be remembered for the education we received and for the friendships we have made. It is composed of 14 seniors who are nominated by the faculty and elected by the members of the senior class. At the first meeting of the staff a junior representative, Mary Gou- beaux, was elected. The student ad- visor is Sally McVay, as she served as junior representative last year. Mrs. Kathryn Griner is advisor and Miss Anita Williams serves as finan- cial advisor. Student Council The Student Council serves to pro- mote better understanding between the students and the school adminis- tration. It is composed of two boys and two girls representing each class. In the course of its activities this year, the Student Council sponsored the Christmas seal drive for tubercu- losis, the March of Dimes for polio, the hall monitor system, published the Greenville high school Hand- book, and made recommendations to the principal for driving permits. Page Ninety Miami Scholarship Team Each spring elimination tests are given to select three students in each subject to participate in the state tests given at Miami University. This year the students pictured above went to Oxford on May 4, to take the state tests. The students that placed in the division, district, or state are pictured below. Page Ninety-one Reporters' Club Quill and Scroll Quill and Scroll is the national honorary organization for high school journalists. New members are selected on the basis of their scholas- tic achievement, extracurricular activi- ties, and writing ability. Dianne Sears is the only member who was admitted in her junior year. Page Ninety-four Orchestra The high school orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Dwight Brown, offers many op- portunities to the students of Greenville High School to express themselves through various types of music. The orchestra, composed of 42 members, took part in both musicals and pro- vided musical interludes preceding the class plays. Concert Band The concert band, under the direction of Russell Aukerman, consists of 68 students in grades nine through twelve. The highlights of the year included the presentation of an assembly before the student body, the Winter Musical, and playing at commencement exercises. In addition the band marched in several parades and presented an assembly to the student body. Drum Major A new feature of the march- ing band this year is the addi- tion of a drum major, Bob Oehrtman, pictured at right. He led the band and major ettes in all their presentations, keeping them in step and lend- ing color to their routines. Page Ninety-seven A Cappella Choir Under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Hill, the A Cappella Choir, composed of seventy male and female voices, participated in a number of activities this year. The choir presented a pep assembly to the student body, sang in the Winter and Spring Musicals, and also sang in the Christmas assembly presented by the speech department. In addition, A Cappella presented a Christmas program at the Rotary and Kiwanis Service clubs, and sang as part of the Good Friday services at the Presbyterian Church. Mike McFarland, junior, ac- companied the A Cappella Choir in all its presentations. At the choir's assembly Mike played his original composition titled, Modern Fantasia. 'FTA Page One Hundred Three Teens' Christian Club The Teens' Christian Club is an organization composed of high school girls of all ages. It serves to establish a fellowship of girls who will endeavor to realize their task as Christians in their daily lives. Nancy Younker, president, led the club in many activities this year, among them the annual Thanksgiving assembly, a basketball pep assembly, and Christmas caroling. In addition T.C.C. sponsored a spring semi-formal dance and Easter services. The Mothers' Club of T.C.C. was also very active this year, giving a party and buffet luncheon for their daughters in March, at which T.C.C. members presented their annual style show. The club is made up of girls taking home economics. Together with Future Farmers of America they sponsored several skating parties in the fall. The Girls' Athletic Association is open to any girl in G. H. S. Each year every member is required to earn 200 points to retain her membership. For the past two years during the polio drive the Hi-Y, G Associa- tion, and the Future Farmers of America each sponsor a junior girl as a candidate for Polio Queen. The Queen is chosen by the stu- dent body who vote by dropping money into specified containers. The girl that receives the largest amount of money is named queen and crowned at a basketball game. She was crowned in ceremonies preceding the Fairborn football game. The candidates for queen circled the football field in converti- bles and then stopped in front of the home section of the stadium. The queen's identity was revealed when Gary Stebbins, Student Council president, presented Ann with a bou- quet of roses. The queen and her court were then escorted to the center of the football field. There the new queen was crowned by Miss Joyce Puterbaugh, a member of last year's court. Green Wave in action Page One Hundred Twenty-eight ' Head Football Coach jacques Laughlin Head football coach for the 1956-57 school term was jacques Laughlin, a native of Sidney, Ohio. After serving four years in the army, Mr. Laughlin attended the University of Cincinnati. In 1952, he began his coaching career at Mt. Healthy, Ohio. After coaching there for two years he began duties as head football coach at Wapakoneta. From Wapakoneta Mr. Laughlin moved to Greenville to assume his coach- ing duties.
