Lowly under- classmen and upperclass nobility he treats with the same imperturbable gremlin audac- ity, although it would seem to some that he takes a particular sadistic delight in torturing Seniors. He has no respect for age or posi- tion. Roger, like the measles, is an affliction against which no one is immune. SENIOR HISTORY lt was a bright September day in T940- the first day of school. We seventh graders gathered in small groups whispering back and forth, Just think, we're in high school now. During our junior high years, the class of '46 was introduced to tea dances, parties, assemblies, and other activities, but it wasn't until we reached the eighth grade that we really started to get into the swing of things. We sponsored a paper drive and with the money bought shrubs to plant at the front of the Memorial Hall. The next year of our high school career was a big one-we were Freshmen now. Fear crept into each heart-fear over the prospects of being initiated. ln due time we learned that initiation was fun-but wait till next year -then it was our turn. For the first time we had class officers. The system of self-nomina- tion of candidates for class officers was used with the following results: Don Kemble, presi- dent, Bill Fletcher, vice-president, Janice Munn, secretary, Don Wagner, treasurer, and Bob Roll, reporter. This year we held our first class party which was carried out in true carnival fashion. We soon found ourselves Sophomores. The boys were going out for athletics now and the girls were getting up their own basketball teams. Some members of the class were elected to offices in school organizations. This year Jean Allen was elected class presi- dent, Bill Crump, vice-president, Juanita Todd, secretary, Bill Fletcher, treasurer, and Jeanette Goeke, reporter. Toward the end of the year the class party was held. It was called the Funnies Follies. Junior class rings were chosen so they would be ready for the next year. Some Super Seniors. Co-eds. Look what we've got. Just two goons. Oh, come on, kids. Smile, please. Ice cold pop! Swing your partners. ,, it 6' ,SQL i LTQQI units?-' fr it 1 L ' 1251 is T f i , f' , ,M I T' s T.:-, 553 ,,.Y.,.Q,xjk NN ! ,ggi ELL' -5 A4 'N .icq .s. 2 if T if .1 i , gqliigslxx- :, fit: - . Our junior yeor brought further responsi- bilities, ond we were involved in more octivi- ties. This yeor on ccimpoigning system wos used for selecting closs officers. Joe Patterson was elected president, ,leon Allen, vice-presi- dent, Phyllis DeWeese, secretory, Betty Lou Christensen, treosurer, ond Chuck Schmer- mund, reporter. We were especiolly busy neor the end of the yeor, The Junior closs ploy, Days Without Doddyf' wos presented under the direction of Mr, Oliver, iournolism ond mothemotics teocher. Fincxlly there was the Junior-Senior Prom. It hod been o big yeor but the following yeor wos the one to which oll had been looking forword. lt wos hcird to reolize thot we were seniors ot lost. But os time went on we realized that this yeor wos not very different from other yeors. For Senior closs officers those chosen were Anito Stocker for president, Phyllis Sei- bel, vice-president, Ritci Mother, secretory, Vern Neoleigh, treasurer, Bob Roll, reporter. The Annucil Stoff wos elected ond o mogo- zine subscription drive storted to help findnce the yeor book. This yedr seemed to pciss foster thon oll the preceding ones. It wos no tirne dt oll before the Senior Closs ploy, The Vampire Bot, was ready to be presented. Cops ond gowns were chosen for grdduotion ond Senior pictures were token. Fincilly come the greot doy of grciducition. Now we're on our own-the closs of '46 hos groducited. S. in 1943. The otticers were, Helen Dickey, president, Roberta Wogaman, vice- president, Gloria Shiverdecker, secretary, Howard Patton, treasurer, and Betty Brown, reporter. An outstanding activity ot our class that year was the publishing ot the tirst G. H. S. Handbook. This project grew out ot the English classwork and was the first hand- book ever published by G. H. S, It was de- signed primarily to help new students in be- coming adiusted to the customs and tradi- tions ot school. The book was so well received that a new one has been brought out by each succeeding Freshman class. The big event ot the year was the class party, a real pirates' toray. in the election tor Sophomore otticers, the girls won most ot the ottices. Those elected were, Bob Green, president, Jean Taylor, vice-president, Leona Beisner, secretary, Con- nie Monks, treasurer, and Jean Corle, report- er. This cabinet proved to be a good one, even though, or was it because the girls held the upper hand. The class party, The Bum's Rush, was rated as one ot the best parties ever given in G. H. S. In the Junior year the boys came back into the picture. Dick Gangwer was chosen presi- dent, Eddie Karn, vice-president, Alice Cop- pess, secretary, Don Riegle, treasurer, and Kathryn Goodrich, reporter. Highlights of this year were the Junior-Senior prom and the class play, Every Family Has One, di- rected by iviiss Boyer, Junior English teacher. 2-A 1 M - C- -.f,-q',,.i':7L5..ix ROGER LOOK ,1- n , 5,- 1 Q VER T Having c wonderful time. During our Freshman year we attended several special assemblies in which different teachers gave us information helpful in choos- ing our course of study for the coming year. Among these talks was one by Mr. Metzger on the traditions of Greenville High School. These programs proved interesting and in- structive. On March 9, 1945, we had our Freshman party, the Cherry Frolic. Everything was decorated in accordance with VVashington's i THE SOPI-IS REPORT Birthday, the original date set for the party. llt was postponed because of the coal short- age.D During the summer of 1945 the following people worked on a revision of the G. The members ot our class were rather slow in getting started during the seventh grade due to new surroundings, new classes, and new teachers. By the time we were eighth graders, however, we had learned many things about this school lite. During the T944 stamp and bond sales, we usually attained the TOO per cent mark in buying war stamps betore any other class. We added new members to the Reading Circle also, and several eligible students became members ot the honorary Horton Club. For the tirst time during our high school lite, we students elected class otticers in our freshman year. The following people were elected to direct our class for the year: Bill Hile, president, Dick Canan, vice-president, Jimmy Gray, treasurer, Sussanne Murphy, secretary, and Jean Bayman, reporter. For our class party-since we are the class ot '49-we used the theme of the Gold Rush ot l849, and called it, The Forty Niners' Festival. At the middle ot the year we held a contest to instill better manners among our classmates, and this was so successful that a month later a grammar contest was held, cm... The Greenville High School Band again joined with nine other bands of Western Ohio in the l4th Annual May Band Festival, which was held this year at St. Marys. The festival, which was inaugurated in l929, was discontinued in i942 because of the war, and its revival was gladly greeted by band members. The first festival was held at Celina, Greenville has twice played host to the other bands. Although its membership was somewhat reduced this year, the band made its usual colorful appearance at the football games, where is performed many novel stunts and formations. At the Thanksgiving game it accompanied the Girls' Chorus in a candlelight cere- mony, which was repeated at the game played at Fair- mont. This was the first year since the war that the band has traveled to any out-of-town football game. It is the aim of the band to develop a repertoire of the finest band music, and to learn the fundamentals of marching technique. These five and the rest of the boys on the reserve squad ran up a total score for the season of four hundred and sixteen points to their opponents tvvo hundred and seventy-four points. They were a fairly fast team and worked well together in whatever pinches and tight places there were. The boys made a high percentage of their shots both from the field and from the foul line.
