-43 llEGDlIRlI1?WWDlIRlllD As the twenty-third of an illustrious line of CHIEFS, this book comes to you in classic simplicity. It is hoped that it will bring beauty and inspiration. To all those who have helped in its production we wish to express our sincere appreciation, especially to our sponsor, Miss Bier, for using the boys and girls of our high school as models and donating to the CHIEF the unusual photographs for the frontispiece and the division pages. Since the Treaty City is famed for the verdure of these noblest of God's plants, the theme ofthis year's CHIEF is TREES. A tree is beautifil to an eye searching for beauty aloneg yet he who meditates upon a tree may see an even greater beauty in its inward, symbolic meaning. Lives are like trees. Some lives resemble the sturdy oak, which braves the storms and shelters the battered wayfarer. Other lives resemble Lombard poplars pointing ever upward to better, brighter, higher things. Some ofer us beauty similar to sfyt, pink-petalled apple trees in May or red-gold maples in hazy autumn. Some, like the fruit trees, create generous bounty for a hungry race. Still others, through sujering. reach a sublimity comparable to that fy' the weeping-willow. Some, like the evergreens, are ever cheerful, even in bleakest winter. And finally, a few lives are like the elm, which in old age spreads its ancient branches in peaceful benediction over its fellows in the grove of life. JAMES COMES ROBERT A. HORN.
