It is hoped that it will bring beauty and inspiration. To all those who have helped in its production we wish to express our sincere appreciation, especially to our sponsor, Miss Bier, for using the boys and girls of our high school as models and donating to the CHIEF the unusual photographs for the frontispiece and the division pages. Since the Treaty City is famed for the verdure of these noblest of God's plants, the theme ofthis year's CHIEF is TREES. A tree is beautifil to an eye searching for beauty aloneg yet he who meditates upon a tree may see an even greater beauty in its inward, symbolic meaning. Lives are like trees. Some lives resemble the sturdy oak, which braves the storms and shelters the battered wayfarer. Other lives resemble Lombard poplars pointing ever upward to better, brighter, higher things. Some ofer us beauty similar to sfyt, pink-petalled apple trees in May or red-gold maples in hazy autumn. Some, like the fruit trees, create generous bounty for a hungry race. Still others, through sujering. reach a sublimity comparable to that fy' the weeping-willow. Some, like the evergreens, are ever cheerful, even in bleakest winter. And finally, a few lives are like the elm, which in old age spreads its ancient branches in peaceful benediction over its fellows in the grove of life. JAMES COMES ROBERT A. At the close of the school year the senior class of 1932 purchased and donated to the school a bronze bust of Washington to celebrate the Washington Bicentennial. On November eleventh of this school year there was held under the sponsorship of the junior class an All-Class party. In club activities six clubs have been especially notable. Sodalitas Latina and La Sociedad Cas- tellana each held its famous banquet. The Art Club has had a series of charming studio parties. The Girl Reserves have been active in charity work throughout the year. The Dramatic Club assisted in the sale of health seals during the Christmas season by giving a play. The Reporters' Club, which is responsible for the publication of The G. H. S. Advocate , has effected a permanent organization and has secured permission to award emblems for merit, thus becoming one of the recognized service clubs of the high school. On May 12-13 of this year the Western Ohio Band Festival was held here. At that time the school and the city were host to nine bands and the noted con- ductor, Frank Simon. Of a series of outstanding chapels, Booster Day, as always, was nearest and dearest to the students' hearts. This year again a minstrel show was one of the features. Comedy acts and music completed the program. During the year a Citizenship Trophy and medals for the senior girl and the senior boy chosen for thc award were donated to the school. The first recipients were Mary Clark and Robert A. Horn. Greenville High School has been successful in the State Contests held at Miami University. In the State Commercial Contests at Lima and Bowling Green the high school has also been very successful. It has likewise been successful in the Senior Scholar- ship Contests, winning this year six of the first ten places in the county. In last year's contest Esther Drill won a two year scholarship to Miami Uni- versity. Edward Poling won a scholarship in chemistry at Ohio Wesleyan University. During the year the posting of class standings has been re- sumed. Finally, during the year a permanent record was made of school activities in the form of motion pic- tures of students at work and at play. ,455 12 1- '- 'L 2 af. Hom Hail to the Chief say we of the G. I-1. S. Advocate ! The high school paper was established three years ago, on the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the school year book. In these three years the co-operation between the two school publications has become constantly closerg their staffs have been closely related. Their fields do not conflict. In fact, they supple- ment each other to bring to the school a complete record of the year's activities. May they ever continue in the spirit of mutual helpfulness. We hope, too, that the Chief may grow each year bigger and better, and that it may enjoy, under the guidance of Miss Bier and the class of '35, a great silver anniversary. Zeb Smith's Column This here Krick lad was caught washin' his feet in the pickle barrel over at the General Store again. So it looks like there goin' to be a sale on pickles. Feb Blizzard has took his new mare, Clarlabell , over to have her shod. Jep Rentz has been stepping pretty high and a lively here a late. Sy Kagey was out and took a shot at one of Zebs prize sheep which had been eatin' his grass out in the pasture. Over at the party at the Grange Hall , this Deeter won the prize for a taking the biggest bite out of the cake. Miss Bier wondered what the mis- placed piece of furniture was in the An- nual Play plcture, and later found out that Jimmy 1SchnozzleJ Roesser had stuck his nose around the corner just as the camera clicked. Miss Hathaway: Change the sentence, 'Father shot the bear, into passive voice'. Celia Haines: The bear shot father. LOST, STRAYED or STOLEN-From the Art Room, The Purple Pup. T. R. Twiddleburp in G. H. S. Well, school will soon be over, and the class of 1933 will be just another group of Alumni and Alumnae. For several reasons I am sorry to see them go. Chief among these is the fact that G. H. S. will lose seriously by the graduation of this class. Among the members of this class are to be found some of the most brilliant students, the finest musicians, and the most accomplished athletes ever to receive their diplomas from Greenville High School. This class, which is about to graduate, has always been well represent- ed in any scholarship contests in which they have participated. Proof of their musical talent will again assert itself at commencement, when these graduating Seniors will offer, doubtlessly, the most brilliant musical program that has ever graced any commencement exercises for G. H. S. graduates. This class was also well represented during these flush years of Greenville's athletic supremacy and school spirit. Although I may be wrong, it is my opinion that this very class may be given credit for inaugurating this splendid era of school spirit. I refer to thc time when as Freshmen they gave a ban ner to the high school. Possibly I could go no indefinitely like this, but as I must close, I'11 sum it all up and say, So long you class of 1933, and the very best of all kinds of good luck to you . Corridor Classics By Marcella Barnhardt In English class Don Gerber was asked the question of what five books he would take with him if he were cast on an island from which there was no prospect of re turing for ten years, and Don's reply was that one would be a cook book.
