Mysteriousness and little gifts-that means Alpha sisters. Book reviews, informative discussions, good fellowship-that means an outstanding organiz- ation, The Ladies of Elpinice. This club includes a homogenous group of coeds chosen for member- ship by competitive debate try-outs. Activities of the year include a study of current events, talks, and elocutionary practice as well as pleasant associ- ation at parties and teas under the supervision of Mrs. Woods. The annual banquet with the brother organization, Agora, was this year given by Elpinice. AG RA An organization with the power of prestige, Agora has a long history of important members. Men with a flair for expressing themselves verbally find a medium for such expression in the debates, forums, and discussion sessions of the Gentlemen of Agora. Programs are planned to stimulgfe interest fu current events, speech technique, and forensic activities. A This year the gentlemen sponsored a declamatory contest open to all students, and cooperated in War Bond salesmanship. As in Elplhictm mmm bership in Agora is attained by competitive try-out speaking. COIslLlEGlE MISS ONARY SOCIETY The most important organization on the campus, numerically speaking, is the College Missionary Society. Automatically each student and faculty member belongs to this group. The meetings are held monthly, during the midweek-devotions hour. This year, under the energetic direction of Presi- dent lames and his live-Wire corps of officers, College Missionary Society has given a series of challenging and inspiring services, such as the February meeting when everyone brought pencils to join in making a synthesis of the elements of a missionary call, as seen in the lives of four outstanding iiiissieiis aries. Through the council, stud- ents have a voice in the affairs of their college. I F rom its very beginning, it has cooperated with the faculty committee in superintending all student problems. Besides supervising the selection of our student leadership, this government of collegiates plans such activities as the Q11-college hike and campus clean-up day. lt continually executes laws for the good of the entire student body. Many problems have ariseniduring this War year, but the Student Coun- cil, under the very competent leadership of our student body president, Ed- ward Spencer, has solved every problem in an intelligent and democratic manner. On suggestion of the members of this group, a new movie projector and sound equipment was bought and presented to the college as a gift from the entire student body of l944. - STANDING: Marston, Sanders, Herstine, Hoter, Dr. LaDue, Galbreath, Andrews, Quall, Schmidt Ahern, Cunningham, Lamson. VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Greenville College after morethan 25 years once again got on the war- path of intercollegiate basketball activity. Coach Cunningham was hit hard by war conditions but by cooperation and determination he was able to mold a formidable varsity team of 10 cagersr The coach's efforts paid dividends with the Gremlins winning 5 and losing 4 for a successful inaugural season. One would think that the team specialized in last minute thrillers judging from the fact thatA5 of the games were either won or lost in the last minute tilts. Ray Woodrow captured scoring honors by sinking llO points. l-le along with Oz Kline and Marv Galbreath will be lost at graduation. These three including Captain Bob Archer, who is now in the Navy V-l2, and the Mighty Hersh Moore made up the nucleus of the varsity team. Those receiving letters besides the varsity were Wes Schmidt, who proved that he could make 'em from any angle, and Erv Pratt, who functioned exceptionally well at the center position. The Navy has also claimed three other members of the varsity team: Dwight Horton, Dick Kendall, and Moses Flowers. The coach and his boys are to be congratulated for a fine season and for the school spirit which has been shown. 44 !
