Young Front row: lvliss l-lathaway, F. Young, Walworth, Ed- wards iw , ln providing education that is necessary and useful, business education stands in the foreground. There is plenty of evidence that-in the immediate future at least-there will be a considerable increase in employment opportunities for office workersf, These statements of C C, Reigner, editor of the Rowe Budget, a business periodical, reveal the possibilities in the field of business for fitly prepared youth. Three distinct courses are provided in the commercial depart- ment of Greenville College. An intensive secretarial course is given, with a stenographic certificate award at the end of the academic year. Courses in business administration and economics are offered to those students training for executive and promotional positions. A qualifying curriculum for the high school commercial teaching certificate is maintained, supplemented with various subjects from other departments necessary to teaching. A liberal arts college setting gives to the School of Commerce the cultural influence of college life. This attribute, coupled with the technical training required in commercial fields, insures the production of a profitable business education. lvliss l-lathaway The great spiritual fortress of the church back home is found here in the college church. Pastoral counsel and friendli- ness are found in the Reverend l. A. Williams. The great duty and responsibility of integrating college and community life has been very well executed by Reverend Williams. Interest in stu- dent life vvas manifested by our pastor in his presence at l.aDue Chapel and Burritt Gymnasium. The spiritual life of the campus vvas reiuvenated and strength- ened this year under the evangelism of the Reverend B. l-l. Rear- son, youth leader and editor of the Light and Life Evangel, and the Reverend l. N. Toole, evangelist from the Ohio Conference. The community as vvell as the college benefittefl spiritually from the heart searching messages of these men of Cod. Reverend Williams Church Music ROBERT W. WOODS, AB., lvlus. Min, Director ot lvlusic, Professor ot Sacred lvlusic l l-lear America Singingll' Whitman cried in his exultant poem. And he gave us the song ot the carpen- ter . . . the young mother . . . the boatman . . . But more dear to us than these are the blended voices ot Christian youth praising Cod in song. Through the College-Community Chorus, the A Cappella Chorus, and the three travelling quartets, Oreenville College has given a hearttelt, spiritual mes- sage to audiences throughout the middle vvest again this year. These organizations otter opportunities to voung people vvno like music, to use their talent and at the same time attord pleasure and inspiration to others. F -ll 'A MS' -ff Nam. L A l eaf, r . A fine spirit of cooperation characterized the activities of the senior year. Many of our number held leading positions on the campus and practically everyone participated in some activity -forensic, student administration, religious life, music, science, or journalism, The Skip-l-like, lvlove-Up Day, and Class Night Pro- gram comprised a great deal of the activity of this year. These two, by their ebgample of practical Christian living, their ready cooperation, and their true spirit of '43 , have helped to build a well-united class from a once-disorganized group of wide-eyed, green-gilled freshmen. r Tradition always has a unifying effect, lf so young a class as the sophomores can be said to have tradition, surely one of its finest is that of annually winning the basketball championship. For two years the men of '43 have carried off the honors in this field. Another class tradition is the good fun prevailing at such func- tions as the sister-class hikes and the class Christmas parties. For pictorial evidence of such good times, there is in this volume a whole page of snap-shots awarded to our class for winning first place in the l94l VISTA snap contest. Randel Milligan ldella Bohn Frank Ashcratt Robert Fine FFCSIIHICD - ii i fn Introduction Timidly and perhaps a bit unsure of ourselves, we came to Green- ville on that bright September day which had been set apart by the Catalog and the C Book for registration. We were met by many obliging upper classmen who offered us much heeded assistance, and before we knew it we were all settled with enough teachers and courses to keep us busy for half a year. Then how thankful we were when our Big-Brothers and Big- Sisters introduced themselves, and in turn helped us to become acquainted with those whom we had not already met. Since then our ninety-some Freshmen have begun to expand into all branches of a typical college life. ln every organization on the campus, the freshmen are taking an active part. ln the world of sports, our girls came through to win the basketball championship. Our boys were also right up there in the running, tying for second place in the men's division. To help us in our activities and to give us advice, we chose Professor and Mrs. Quall, who have proved themselves to be capable, fun-loving sponsors. We have enjoyed our first year at Greenville, and most of us are looking forward to a happy future in G. C. Professor and lvlrs Alvin B. STUDENT VOLUNTEERS There's a call comes ringing o'er the restless vvave, Send the light, send the lightf' A challenge such as this cannot long go unheeded on the campus ot a Christian college. Accordingly, in l903, IVIISS Edith Frances jones organized a group ot young people vvho telt the call ot Cod upon them tor missionary vvork. The group, then knovvn as the Volunteer Band, has novv become the Student Volunteers, an organization tor the inspiration and in- struction ot those vitally interested in missions. LIFE SERVICE LEAGUE Lite Service League includes those members ot Cospel League who are not planning on definite Christian vvork but vvho desire to live lives ot service tor Christ in vvhatever vocation they may choose. Its members have promoted Christian living through in- spirational and challenging programs at the regular meetings and through service in other activities, By going out to other com- munities as singers, speakers, and Sunday school teachers, by such projects as the sending ot boxes to a converted jail inmate at Attica, New York, and by cooperation vvith the Child Evangelism lvlovement and vvith the other chapters ot Cospel League, the Lite Service group have becorne a vital torce tor Christian education in Creen- ville College. Placing second were the freshmen who lost only to the juniors. An innovation on the C. C. campus was the touch football tournament, which the juniors won by taking all of their contestsg Q Leonda Lewis defeated Elmer Schwalbe in the finals of the tennis singles to be- come champion. Lewis and Reese beat out Craig and Dowley for championship in the men's doubles division. The basketball season got into full swing shortly after the Christmas vacation, and when it was all over the sophomores had won the men's championship by taking five of their six games. A junior team was victorious in the volleyball tournament. ln taking all four games on their schedule, they nosed out the second-place faculty who dropped one.
