That year the great depression began, but we felt no depression in our spirits. VVe set out to enjoy our college life, and although perhaps the depression caused a thinning of our ranks, we are glad that thirty-eight of our members have been able to successfully complete their four years. The past years have been eventful and delightfully spent. Realizing the fundamental importance of a right beginning, we tried the very first year to fit into Greenville's program, and as guides we chose Professor and Mrs. Gadclis, who have been a help and an inspiration to each of us. We have a vivid remembrance of our Sophomore days, especially of such things as winning basketball and soccer tournaments, wearing Junior distinctions, and in general, forming lasting friendships. In our junior year, we were active in all phases of college life. NVell repre- sented in music, literary and religious organizations, we were especially noted for our members on the intercollegiate debate teams and for taking the honors in the track meet. As this year draws to a close, we feel that it has been the best. VVe carry away with us memories of the Sister-Class hike, the All-College hikes, Senior week, climaxecl by the Junior-Senior banquet, and the Senior Skip Hike to Decatur Lake. Wle leave a good scholastic record also, our class having highest scholas- tically, last semester. Now Commencement Day, the climax and the most significant event of our college career, approaches and we feel that we are taking with us not only a host of pleasant memories of social functions-of college life in general-and of never-to-be-forgotten associations, but also a correct knowledge of God, correct views of man, and sound views of life values. RUTH NICHOLS. Four years of joys and lzeartaehes- Of laughs and tears-of hopes and shattered dreams- Four years of comradeship, and classes, and activities, and study- Four years of life in Greenville. May we who go on make clear the path- Maji flzose who come after, follow 'with firm and eager step. Forty THE JUNICDRS Professor and Mrs. Timbers have been truly helpful and wise councilors in the activities of the junior Class for the past three years-real friends to each of us as well as co-fellows with us in our good times. VVe are looking forward to a year of unequaled association with them and with our Patricia Ann. Three college years have slipped into the eternities of the past and have left their imprint on the lives of the men and women striving to be different- and what's more, attaining it. Now that we have almost arrived, we may look back to the dear old Fresh- man daze and into a Sophomore year of fair athletic and academi: success. As three year people. we have enjoyed a reception given by our capable honoraries, a Hallowe'en mixer of lasting memory, and preparation for the modernistic Junior- Senior banquet. We have been especially favored in athletics this year, having f il l 1: 5 lk in ll l i i l i ir: ig, I i tl' i r 5' V PROP 'lIMn1:Rs MRS TIMBERS attained honors in soccer, volley ball, as well as major and minor basketball. From far and near they trouped, anxious to ex- perience college life, to conquer new problems, and to prove themselves upon untried fields. They were an unknown quantity, yet Greenville. accepting them with her traditional hospitality, welcomed the newcomers at the All-College Re- ception. From the start the Class of '36 proved adaptable. After attending the Reception, hearing all the names, seeing all the faces, they promptly forgot them, choosing rather to weave friendship from the warp and woot of daily contacts and mutual interests- Yet from this foundation of fellowship, the class was able to press forward to thorough acclimation, into the whirl of school life, and to quickly find ways of enjoyment and accomplishment. The transition to college routine was soon effected. They were ready to resume progress toward the goals which the ambition of youth had set. Yes, the Class of '36 is ambitious, not with the ambition that tramples under feet the cherished hopes of others, but with an ambition engendered in joy of excelling, a love of accomplishing. A glance at the records of the class and its individuals shows endeavor, excellence, and mastery in every phase of college life. The tale of literary and scientific studies, sports and sportsmanship, and social activities, bears the imprint of their efforts and assures their reputation of unusual energy and ability. That energy must carry them far. Coupled with proven ability and per- severance, it must enable them to safely traverse the pitfalls of future discourage- ment and depression. It must bring to some prominence and appreciation- It must enable others to carry on the battle, to live and love life where hope has Hed and relief never comes. It must make the future of the class noble in the truest sense, not evident tomorrow but in that day when the whole orderly pattern of life is spread in blends of the sombre and the bright, the intricate and the simple. DEPARTMENT OF TI-I EOLQGY The interest in this department during the past year has been excellent. Professor Harold H. Wiinslow, who has had active charge of the Department, has won the hearts of his students and has acceptably taught a variety of Biblical subjects to good-sized classes. As the writer retires from connection with the College, he wishes Professor W'inslow many years of usefulness in his important position. There have been live full-time, post-graduate students in this department this year: VVillia1n Bartlette, Bessie Reid, Herbert G. Roushey, Carson Reber, and George Turner. Two other post-graduates have taken some Work in the TOP ROW: Roushey. Herrick, Reber, Bartlette. BOTTOM ROW: Reichert, Turner, Reid, Winslow, Quass Department: I. IJ. Quass and Mrs. H. G. Roushey. Two experienced ministers, Rev. George Reichert and Rev. Herrick, have also taken part-time work. The control of the student publications, of the appropriation of funds for student interests, the sponsoring of social events and programs makes the Student Association one of the most influential groups on the campus. The right of petition is granted but all legislation must pass the approval of the administration. True, about one-third of our time was charged with official business and discussions, but, as a result, we have a clear-cut, revised constitution, a standard- ized key in place of the old pin, and many other improved points. After all, we are better parliamentarians as the result of the extensive intellectual tilting. Our forensic program sponsored a schedule of sixteen intercollegiate de- bates with nine different colleges and universities. -3 Our year came to a climax socially when the ladies of Elpinice were our guests at a Depression Banquet the eve of Pres. R0osevelt's inauguration. As the Agora of '33 becomes history, the members go their several ways better equipped by the wit, poise, viewpoints and fellowships experienced and practiced in the society. At the beginning of the year the society departed from its usual procedure and entertained prospective members at a Guest Nighti' at which a typical pro- gram was given. The club entertained at two teas during the year, one welcoming the new members and the other in honor of the Wheaton debaters and their coach. Seventy-four GOSPEL LEAGUE Choice in its personnel and highly devotional in its activities, the Gospel League holds a vital and significant place in the life of Greenville College. This League consists of two individual groups-the Ministerial Association and the Student Volunteer Society. These two organizations still retain their identity and hold regular semi-monthly meetings. Thus, they are able to give proper emphasis and attention to interests relating to their respective fields. In their programs they discuss current topics, Christian doctrines, world-wide missionary activities, and questions pertaining to religious experience. Throughout the year, this has proved a valuable source of helpful instruction and inspiration, resulting in an earnest desire to do active service for Christ. The League furnishes practical experience for the students. It receives calls from the field and selects the persons who are best fitted for each individual activity. Those appointed go out as a Gospel Team and each member is re- sponsible for a certa.in part of the service. ln this way the students receive great benefit as well as those to whom they minister. i During the year these gospel teams have conducted services in many places. Some of the students preach, quartets sing, and others help in various ways. Nor do they neglect local needs. Each Sabbath members of the League meet for prayer and then start out in small groups to visit the homes of shut-ins, while others hold afternoon services in the jail or in the state prison farm. God's special blessing has attended this work. Not only'have the young people received much spiritual profit as well as training for future usefulness, but they also have given great inspiration to those whom they have served. PROP. The varied programs of the year have been made especially interesting and inspirational through the hearty cooperation of Rev. I. S. W. Ryding and Miss Bessie C. Reid missionaries on furlough from Chinag Rev. and Mrs. Herbert G. Roushey, from Portuguese East Africag and Miss Myrtle Anderson for some time a missionary among our neighbors in the mountains of Kentucky. They have related many thrilling experiences and given much first-hand information that has made our missionary work a living reality. A further source of interest and information has been maintaiined through the missionary reading contest. R Not only have the programs been interesting and educational but a subs stantial amount has been raised toward the support of Rev. Jacob Schaffer, one of our missionaries on the field in China, and a former student of Greenville College. It is hoped that the influence of the meetings of this year will culminate both in consecrated lives and in the ardent support of the missionary cause, thus turning many to righteousness. RALPH W. A league, program of athletics and sports is provided which has a three-fold aim-recreational, moral, and educational. Recreation is necessary for those who study and give themselves over to mental exertion. Good-will and friendliness, proper association with others, fair- ness, loyalty, modesty, and self-control show the moral value of physical education. Under the educational value we find the development of initiative, quick thinking, judgement, concentration, courage, and the ability to cooperate. Athletic competition is entirely intramural. Calesthenics classes are pro- vided for both men and women. The Physical Education Department has been making marked progress Linder the capable direction of Dean Harford and his assistants, Ruth Moyer and Harold Grothaus. Standing-Marston, Fink, Franklin, Biddulph, Kelsey. Seated-Powell, Wesley, Lucco. MENS BASKETBALL This year the winter major sport held the interest and enthusiasm of the whole student body. Every game that was played had many high points and mo- ments of tension. Each team played good basketball in both the major and minor tournaments. The Juniors were the winners of the major tournament and tied with the Freshmen for first place in the minor tournament. Excellent sportsmanship, coupled with determination and ability, gave them the victory over the other classes who played with no less sportsmanship and pluck but were lacking in ability. At the end of the season the following men were chosen for the all-star team: Jerry Powell, Wfesley Biddulph, W'illiam Brenneman, Amos Rule, Edward Hilbert, Gilbert Mouser, Lester Gilliem, and Wfalter NVesley. Eiqhiy-Iwo SPOQTSMANSHIP I-IONOQS Every year the Greenville College student body select one man and one woman f or sportsmanship honors. The women, instructed by Ruth Moyer, also gave an exhibition which showed fine training and hard work. The winners of the tumbling medals were: Walter Wesley, first, Chester Crill, second. for the men. Mary Harvey, first, and Ruth Lasswell, second, for TRACK . The annual inter-class track meet was held in May and it was won by the juniors. The high point man, however, was a Freshman, Carter Todd. In the women's events, Bonnie Brenneman was the high point winner. Close competition marked a number of the scheduled events. the women. The club is composed of twenty-eight mem- bers who are divided into four groups, each being under the leadership of a good captain. Regular practice periods are held culminating in a grand tournament featured during Commencement week. The club is a real asset to the school and it has been a source of enjoyment and a means of physical culture for its members.
