'Lv FLUREYVUPD We are forever building things skyscrapers, highways bridges, and our own lives Whatever is truly alive is engaged in improving itself through some form of change or construction It is around this theme that we have built this book This year, especially, Construction is animportant and timely sub- ject. We see its simpliest form as we watch the new addition of the school going up. We will observe its deeper meaning throughout life, We might say that, during these past twelve years of school we have been given the mortar and stone as well as a solid foundation, What kind of a life we shall build from this only we can decide. We shall be the architects, the contractors, and the tenants of our careers. Ours will be the plan and the labor - the world will share in the ultimate reward. We hope that this book may serve to remind us, not only of the past, but of our debt to the future. It is not a memorial to the class of 1955: it is an unfinished record of our early life. Perhaps several blank pages should have been added to this book - pages on which the remainder of our record may be kept. Only on these pages may someday the full extent of our accomplishments be estimated. DEDHCATIIUN MR. WARREN G. DAVIS We dedicate this ' ' issue of the Pioneer to Warren G. Davis, Greenvil1e's beloved Art Instructor to whom the class of '55 will forever be grateful for his help throughout the past years. Artists may produce excellent designs but 'll ' , wi avail little unless the public is sufficiently culti- vated to appreciate them, -Mason Graduation from high school indicates that you have successfully completed 12 years of work in the public school system. Your diploma is a testimony of your achievement, To graduate has required work, study, and sacrifice on your part. Your graduation also represents a tremen- dous expenditure of time, energy, and money on the part of others. The State, the community, and Board of Education, and your teachers and parents have all contributed willingly and gladly toward your education because your life is an investment in America and its future. I believe that as a citizen you will assume your duties and responsibilities seriously and cheerfully. I believe, too, that your education has prepared you to perform them efficiently. May you ever be mindful of your great American heritage and of your individual responsibility in perpetuating and improving the American way of life and its Christian ideals, ELWOOD HITCHCOCK Superintendent of Schools SCOTT M, ELLIS p Supervising Principal , As graduates of Greenville Central School soon to become community leaders, you must strive to l realize your responsibility to one another, your duty to your neighbor, and the necessity of belief and trust in God and communion with Him. The destiny I of the future rests on you and on the other millions of your age. You must remember that only goodness and character endure through all ages. When dis- couraged, or downhearted, may I suggest Psalm 121: 'I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills From whence cometh my help, My help cometh from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. The Magazine Drive, our first challenge, was a victory as we achieved first place. Our Durham colleagues joined us, and we were the first to enjoy the new cafeteria and classrooms added in 1951. Our Sophomore year was heralded amid renewed enthusiasm as we enjoyed the humorous All-Star Game, The Round-Robin held at our school in 1952 was well attended. 'I'hen almost without our realization, the Sophomore stage of our climb toward gradua- tion was completed. The favor of our Junior year included a Sadie Hawkins Dance. We enjoyed a financial and social success in this, our First affair of that kind. National Honor Society, Modem Problems Club, and the trip to Saratoga with our basketball champions exhausted even more of our now limited time. Our Prom Hawaiian Nights was a fitting climax to our previous triumphs. Shirley Babcock and Walter Birmann reigned over the pleased populace and danced to the strains of Tangerine, Following the summer hiatus, our Senior Year was upon us, Soon we would be the latest alumni of our Alma Mater. September, 1954 foimd us eagerly awaiting our class rings. The production of More than Meets the Eye' was a financial success and caused many a lifted eyebrow. We set a new precedent by having a Senior Ball on December 11, fittingly entitled the Senior Snow Ball, On April 16, the Seniors retumed from an eventfully tour of their national capital. The fun of the Senior Trip combined with the numerous opportunities, both cultural and practical, for furthering our education, left us with the feeling that we had come, we had won, we had conquered. Our carefree days were numbered: the real challenge of life lay in die question mark of the future. We the class of 1955 had the good fortune to see the new additions and improvements to our school as they were made. We are indeed the veterans of the Construction Era, As Commencement recedes into the haze of the past, the graduates of our class will follow the motto Born Americans, Live Americans, Die Americans, as they translate what they have leamed into a pennanent design for living. 1. 1. As we walked in, the now famous motto caught our eyes: Eat What We Serveg Mabey You Will, Mabey You Won'tl ldieJ. As we sat down, Gene Giffin told us that he owns the only cow in the world that gives chocolatemilk. We hear that Gail Hendrick is now writing the jokes and the rapid fire dialogue of the Biskupick and Halsted Comedy Team. They are starring on Broadway with Richie Traynor as the main attraction of their show. He is the Jazz King who has just sold over a mil- lion copies of his famous hit, The Greenville Blues. We hear that Donnie Makely and Herb Schegel, the great math wizards, have just developed the fourth dimension. Eileen Baitsholts is the Professor of Agriculture at Cornell University. Reinhard Von Kampen who has won world wide fame as a big game hunter has just returned with a catch of two elephants, one leopard, and one African skunk. He said that was enough for him. Fred Reinhardt tells us that he owns his own comic book publishing company. He writes all the murder stories, while Congress is trying to pass a bill to outlaw them, Fred tells us that Margaret John has married an oil tychoon and together they have developed jet service between Earth and Mars. Also Shirley Clickman is Catherine Howard's private secretary. Catherine is the president of the Baby Sitters Club. Fred also tells us that his old friend John Liebmamr, is a leading columnist for the New York Times. He is often seen on the TV program produced by George Frees, known to the public as Debate and Learn. Many heated arguments between Larry Cooke and John take place. Larry is a columnist who answers love problems under the name of Grandma Letty. Emily Irwin tells us that she and Margie Mattice are the sole owners of 'The Twin Oaks Dude Ranch located in Texas. Gordon Sands who has returned to his beloved West is the riding instructor there. Mary Phelps painting of Miss Wooster's History Class of 1965 hangs in the outer lobby. Emily gave us some interesting bits of information about Twin Oaks. Robert Buscher, the famed architect, designed the entire goup of buildingsr and the landscaping. Kathryn Vin- cent sees to the cactus gardens which also add to the landscaping. CLASS PROPHECCY One of the other members tells us that Dorothy Wilson has won wide renown for her new publication THE GIRL WHO NEVER LAUGHED. Lora Leatherman is holding the job of court stenographer for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Vic La Plante. We hear that Bruce Powell has developed his own atomic powered trolley line to Coxsackie. Thomas Stamas now writes the comic strip, They'll Do It Everytime and 'I'he Urge To Kill Department, taken from his own real life. Robert Cooke, the Senator from New York, holds the filibuster record for talk- ing about his good old school days in G. C. S. fMaybe you think he didn't hold the Senators' attention.j Elizabeth Iuhasz has been voted the Woman-Driver-of-the -year, Jimmy Kudlack and Raymond Teator have taken their tests to become State Troopers for the lucky thirteenth time. The restaurant door opens and in walks Camilla Maloney and a party of friends, Camilla tells us that she is the co-owner of the Cyprus Gardens and the Everglades in Florida. She also mentions Walter Birmann and Ronnie Baumann who are miget auto race-car drivers. Ronnie is also a member of the Board of Directors of Chrysler Motors, but he takes his chances. We all know that Bob Welter is one of the top singers of the country, His latest hit is, Bette, My Bette. His wife, the former Bette Woodruff, has gone to the Fiji Islands to teach the Islanders how to do the American Mambo, A private secretary for a big business firm in New Jersey is Kate Rithaler. Kate takes dictation on her boss's lap but, of course, he is her husband. Too bad though, she lsn't on the payroll. Also, we hear that Alice Seaburgh owns the fastest flea in the world. She has named it Seabiscuit, her nickname. Shirley Babcock, to our great amazement, is the matron of the Greenville Near Hills Old Maid's Home, Millie Reinhold and Eileen Robinson are champion gum chewen. Each one can chew approximately 49 packs of gum at once. Theyare trying to see who can reach the 50 mark first. Louella Palmer, her husband, and family believe that the puppet shows which they put on for the St. Barnard dogs in Greenland give the dogs a greater incentive to rescue people. And what do we hear about Dorothy Finch and Carolyn Grlffen? They have gained permission from the Egyptian govemment to sell sodie pop to all revived mummies. They believe in service with a smile and to every customer they will say, Just something to wet your whistle It needs it, don't it, after all these years? We hear that Veronica Virano, Shirley Moak and Donald Mosley sing for the birds in the Singing Tower in Florida. Don sings soprano, Shirley, tenor and Veronica, bass, Also men- tioned in the conversation is Elizabeth McQuillan. She now owns her own automobile factory. She produces her own make of car, called the Lizzie, QNot the old tin one, eitherlj And what's this we hear about Ronnie Elliott? It seems that he is a famous dress designer and is running competition with Dior. Jeannie Peters has developed a more versatile paint brush, for left handed artists exclusively. George Frees is now the head surgeon at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. Sue Van Auken's all-girl basketball team has beaten the Celtics and won the Women's National Basketball Championship, Tom Kudlack has just returned from a trip to Southeast Afghanistan and is teaching Zoology at Columbia University. Bev Kellie has just discovered a cure for inter- vocallicapathy, Francine Bolster is head psychiatrist at Bay Side mental institute. So we left the Hideaway happy to have heard such an enlightning report about our fellow classmates. .RXG .Strxsd PUR A s X 'M x 4. .N Y 'IFHIE DANCCJE, , ,,-J!lUln -- - ...Mft .--- MA,,,,,,,.,-pmw- ,-guuunli' AROUND SCHOOL I1 'll , Z!! v'0 atm' fir! -ff Lf -.1 I .-,' 1 -. i - PW , - -1' ', ,.y,,,-,, f-L' 32? 25 ll qi' .I It . f '!fPvftei'S 41' lf. Knowledge is im- portant, but the friendships estab- lished among you are also signifi- cant. It is hoped that all of them will be lasting, and many of the friendships, un- doubtedly, will mature with the years, and therefore they cannot be evaluated today. Knowledge and friendship are important in business, too. We had to prove to the State of New York, by a number of written examinations, that we possessed the neces- sary knowledge pertaining to both real estate and insurance so as to safeguard the inter- ests of our clients. We also had to prove trustworthy. We are constantly studying so as to enable us to give our clients the counsel they have a right to expect from us. Because of our knowledge of the insurance business and our reputation in the community, we have been appointed the agent in this territory of some of America's outstanding corpo- rations.
