Nancy has received the Certificate of Merit which attests to the high academic promise of the student. High scores on two college aptitude tests led to the nationally recognized honors for her. Less than one-half of one percent of the seniors in each state received the awards. Russell defeated Raceland, 71-46, in the second game. The losses dropped Raceland1 and Ashland Holy Family from re- maining play in the tournament. Everman was high point man for Greenup with 26 points. Brown paced the Holy Family team with 19 points. Trent led Russell with 29 points as Cotton and Counts led Raceland with 14 points each. Tonight's tournament play matches Greenup and McKell in the first game starting at 7 p.m. Russell and Wurtland clash at 8 p.m. Lineup and score by quarters in first game: GREENUP—58 L. HOLY FAMILY—45 Greenup Upsets Wurtland Five WURTLAND — The Greenup Tigers defeated the Wurtland War- riors 72-71 on the Wurtland floor Friday night. The Tigers led all the way and the Warriors came through with 30 points in the final quarter to pull the edge down to one point. Curt Hutchinson scored 20 points and Joe Mullins 13 to pace the winners. Jim Garthee had 30 points and Larry Foster 15 for Greenup. This was the second upset for Wurtland who had a 7-1 record. Pcrgrem Greenup Tigers Given Award GREENUP—The Greenup Tigers winners of the NEKC Tournamen: Saturday night, also won the Good Sportsmanship Award. The award was based on the excellent sportsmanship displayed by players, fans, cheerleaders and coaches of Greenup High School. The presentation was made by Clifford Loudenback, president of the NEKC at the close of the tournament. H. R. Bowling, Green- up coach, accepted the award on behalf of the school. The Tigers were selected for the honor by a majority vote of representatives from the following participating schools, Ashland Holy Family, Catlettsburg, Louisa, McKell, Rus- sell, Raceland, Wurtland and Fair- view. GREENUP—MISS KAY BRAD- EN. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Braden of Greenup has been selected by the faculty of Green- up High School to receive the Good Citizenship Award present- ed each year by the Poage Chap- ter of the Daughters of The American Revolution. Miss Hicks Named Semifinalist In National Merit Scholarship NANCY HICKS GREENUP — Mrs. Oscar Sam- nons,' principal of Greenup Inde- pendent High School, today an- nounced a Greenup student has been named a semi-finalist in the 1958-50 National Merit Scholar- ship Foundation. Miss Nancy Hicks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hicks of Greenup is among the 10.000 top ►scorers in the National Merit Qualifying test. The semi-finalists now faces an- other rigorous three-hour exami- nation. the Scholastic Aptitude Test of the College Entrance Ex- amination Board, which will fur- ther substantiate their high scores on the NMSQT. This second test will be given in testing centers throughout the U. S. on December 6, 1958. Those who repeat their high fcores on this second test will become finalists in the competi- tion. John M. Stalnaker, is president of National Merit Scholarship Cor- poration, which conducts the an- nual program. As finalists, the students will be eligible for an estimated $5 mil- lion in scholarship awards spon- sored by over 80 business and in- dustrial organizations, professional societies, foundations, individuals, and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation itself, the conductor of the annual nationwide competition. All finalists will receive Certifi- cates of Merit attesting to their high ability; and all colleges and universities will be notified, thus enabling these students to be con- sidered for a wide range of other scholarship awards. Each Merit Scholarship is a four- year award covering the four un- dergraduate college years, and each award carries a stipend tailored to the need of the individual winner. The stipends have been averaging about S650 a year. Minimum awards, for students who have been determined to have no financial need, are $100 a year; and maxi- mum awards, for students who have been determined to have maximum need, are $1,500 a year. More than 700 students will be named as Merit Scholars about May 1. 1959.
