On November 15 and 16 the GCHS Players be¬ gan their 84-85 season with Act 3, a presenta¬ tion of three one act plays. The curtain rose at the Elementary School Auditorium with Lemon¬ ade, a play about two middle-aged women, Jill Newsome, Beth Barnes, who their lives have been less than satisfying. The second play of the evening, The Oyster and the Pearl, re¬ volved around the lesson a young girl, Clara, Beth Johnson, taught the new school teacher, Cheryl Bailey, along with the help of the town barber, Donnie Doyle. Additional cast included Bryan Soles as Clara ' s little brother, Rufus, Claretta Nix as Gretchen, Robin Jarratt as Clara and Rufus’ father, Mark Williams as Judge Applegarth, Sandi Soles as Wozeck, and David Roberts as the writer. The production closed with Death Knocks which presented Shelitta Butts as a clumsy Death and Nelda Nix as a self-confident b usinesswoman, Natalie, whom Death has come to conquer, only to be challenged and defeated at Gin Rummy which allows Natalie another day, if not more, of life. An addition to their acting duties, Sandi Soles, David Roberts, Mark Williams and Robin Jarratt provided live music during set changes. Rob Black, Karen Short, and Pam Harrison with as¬ sistance from cast members worked diligently to make the scene changes smooth and rapid. Under the direction of GCHS Players ' sponsor Julia Jordan, and through the hard work of the cast and crew, Act 3 made an auspicious start of the Players ' year. 4 Plays A THURBER CARNIVAL Left: Mark Williams, Pam Harrison, David Roberts, Cheryl Bailey, Robin Jarratt and Beth Johnson in Word Dance II. Under the direction of Julia Jordan, the eleven cast members performed thirteen scenes derived from the mind of humorist James Thurber. Pia¬ nists Ron Day and Kathryn Barrett added to the production, providing incidental music for many of the scenes. Vicky Wensel choreo¬ graphed Word Dance I and II, lending an air of sophistication to the show. Under the guidance of stage manager Rob Black, scene changes and lighting sequences were smooth and rapid. Through long rehearsals and exhausting set construction weekends, the cast and crew proved themselves to be an ensemble of dedi¬ cated people. The combination of talent, com¬ mitment, and just plain fun, the GCHS Players’ made their finest production to date. Plays 5 6 Theme Student Life Left: Jody Vaughan winner of BETA Spelling Bee. Awards 7 HOMECOMING The most awaited event of a schools football season is Homecoming week and ours was no exception. Promoting school spirit was everyone’s goal. The combined efforts of the SCA, the cheerleaders, and the support of the entire student body led to an exciting and energizing Homecoming. Monday started off Homecoming week with “Beat Street and Breaking Day”, when students came dressed as members of break dancing crews from all over the country. Tuesday was a success as the SCA hosted “Michael Jackson, Prince and Boy George Day.” This required the students to dress up as their favorite entertainer choosing from the three. Wednes¬ day the Homecoming Parade proceeded down Main Street with clubs and organizations from the high school represent- Flower bearers: Danielle Povar and Alexa Dickerson Joey Simms representing yearbook staff in the parade. ed in many magnificent floats. After the Parade our school bonfire was held with everyone gathered around the fire to get pepped up for the rest of the week. Thursday was “Fifties Day” and students came dressed in letterman sweaters and saddle oxfords. Friday Homecoming day was a big day as green and gold was worn to show school spirit. The Home¬ coming game against Randolph Henry on Friday night was a disappointing loss for Eagle fans. Even though the Eagles lost, a very attractive young lady emerged victoriously, Lisa Harvell was selected by the student body to reign as Home¬ coming Queen. Mr. Wilson, principal of GCHS, gave the opening welcome. The graduating class of 1985 had four speakers who delivered commencement addresses. These speakers were: Nelda Nix, class speaker, Our Dreams Can Make The Difference;” Heath Brockwell, elected by the Faculty, Setting Goals for a Brighter Tomorrow; Tamatha Briggs, Salutatorian, “Success and Hap¬ piness — Our Ultimate Attainment; and Jody Vaughan Jr., Valedictorian, Our Shared Legacy.” All four of the speakers were members of the GCHS Beta Club, Who ' s Who Among American High School Students and The National Honor Society. In addi¬ tion to the speeches, a variety of scholar¬ ships and awards were presented to sev¬ eral students. However, the best award was probably receiving their diploma which not only said the past twelve years were over, but also that a new life was just beginning. Mini-Mag 15 LOCAL EAGLETTES WIN ALL-DISTRICT TITLE Above: The Girl Basketball Team them All-District Champions, displays their trophies declaring The Eaglettes Tournament Of Champions This was one of the greatest years for the Eaglettes who fin¬ ished their regular season in 1st place, with a 9-1 record and won the Southside District Championship. Two weeks before the Dis¬ trict Playoff, the Eaglettes met the Brunswick Lady Bulldogs on home soil and crushed them with a 55-44 victory. When the playoff came, the two teams met again for a chance at the district title. The Eaglettes didn ' t show any signs of giving in and blew them away again. Winning the Southside District Champion¬ ship and upsetting Bruns¬ wick ' s four year record was ac¬ complished from this victory. The game was suspenseful and was played for a packed house. It was dominated by Greensville the entire night. Greensville had a five point lead at half-time and finished at 53-49. The outstanding players for the season were: sophomore center Sharon Manning, point guard Michelle Nichols and newcomer Junia Mendes. This season marks the first time in nine years that the Eag¬ lettes have finished in first place and won the district tournament. Sharon Manning and Junia Mendes were named to All District first team and Manning was named MVP of the Tour¬ nament. Above: Behind the scene, Sandi Soles puts make-up on Mark Wil¬ liams. WORLD From Athens to America The 1985 Summer Olympics were unquestionably the most exciting fourteen days of the year. The games were held in Los Angeles, California at the Los Angeles Coliseum and were attended by 47 coun¬ tries. The Summer Olympics opened on July 29 by Rafer Johnson ' s ceremonious climb up the steps to light the sym¬ bolic flame of centuries and closed with a spectacular dis¬ play of fireworks. America did exceptionally well in the games. Carl Lewis won 4 gold medals in track and field followed by Mary Lou Ret- ton with 4 medals in gymnas¬ tics who won the First Olympic Marathon for women. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” Four More Years Every four years after a President is elected another election must be held. In 1980 the United States elected Ron¬ ald Reagan for President and George Bush for Vice-Presi¬ dent. This year (84-85) Presiden¬ tial Elections were held and the candidates were out in full force compaigning. The election was unique in the fact that the public was given a chance to vote for a woman Vice-President. Geral¬ dine Ferraro was chosen by the Democratic Presidential candidate, Walter Mondale, as his official running mate. Back in the Democratic Convention, an interesting new comer was found in Jes¬ sie Jackson, a black. Jackson, who announced his candidacy for the Democratic spot on the presidential ticket, did a great deal of campaigning and en¬ couraging many minorities to take part in the upcoming elections. The Election ended vigor¬ ously for Republican Candi¬ date Ronald Regan, who swept all but 1 state and the District of Columbia to regain his office adding four more years” to his term. Disaster Strikes Philadelphia A devastating confrontation between Philadelphia police and a radical cult kills 11 peo¬ ple and destroys a neighbor¬ hood. In May, police in Philadel¬ phia, acting on complaints, en¬ countered the headquarters of MOVE (a group that preaches a strange blend of primitivism and anarchy) the house was well fortified and full of MOVE members. When attempts were made to enter the house, the members fought with guns to keep the police out. Then attempts were made to talk the members out but they re¬ sponded by saying “we have something for all of you.” Gunfire broke out soon after these attempts and one police officer was badly wounded. Police were then forced to take the offensive and after many ideas were discussed they decided to drop two non¬ incendiary blasting devices on the roof of the MOVE house. Despite the precautions tak¬ en, fire broke out and soon got out of control destorying 61 homes leaving 250 people (who were previously evacuat¬ ed) homeless. Thus, the sad ending to a sad story comes to an end in Philadelphia. ey into the slot so her call can go thru. Hum, just who is she trying to reach? The Tragic Hijacking Of The T.W.A. Flight THE CRISES OF THE TRANS WORLD AIRLINE FLIGHT 847 riveted the atten¬ tion of the world from June 14 to June 30. The plane took off from Athens airport with 153 persons, of them were 104 Americans, when two hi¬ jackers emerged and ordered the captain to fly the plane to Beruit, Lebanon. The hijackers were identi¬ fied as members of the Israeli Islamic Jihad (holy war) and demanded the release of 766 prisoners, mostly shiites, whom Israeli forces had de¬ tained before and during their wi thdrawal from Southern Lebanon. During this time the U.S. sent war ships into the area and insisted that the hostages be released. We made no at¬ tempts at attacking because such attempts would probably have proven fruitless. Some of the hostages were released a few days after, but the terrorists took the life of a passenger, Robert Stethem, a navy steel worker and diver. He was killed and thrown from the plane, on the way to Beruit. Then 39 of the remaining prisoners were hidden in Ber¬ uit for 13 days before they were finally released and transported to Damascus, then to West Germany and Freedom. It is one of the best ways of representing our school. Many people be¬ lieve its just fun and play, but it isn’t. Like any other sport, cheerleading requires phys¬ ical coordination, dedication, patience, and the ability to Right bottom row: Theda Riggins, Missy Bolton, Nancy Perkins, Shelitta Butts. Gold Spirit Builders communicate as a team. It demands that a person has the desire to be the best at what he or she does and has school spirit. Cheerleaders do more than just cheer to build spirit. We make up dance routines, prepare pep rallies, sell spirit ribbons, make signs, and ex¬ ecute difficult stunts. Our various jumps also add to Eagle spirit. A cheerleader’s sharpness, projection, and enthusiastic smile keep spirit flowing. After all the hard work is done, all goals are achieved. Consequently the team and the crowd get psyched up; thus, the cheerleaders begin to love what we do and have fun. —Cheryl M. Bailey Right: Tamatha shows that she ' s a real ACE. I want to especially thank the adver¬ tisers and patrons for their fi¬ nancial support and Mrs. Doris Bennett for graciously volun¬ teering to be our financial ad¬ viser. We are indeed indebted to the Southside Sun and to Susan Hamlin, Independent Messenger, for providing us with many of our photographs. It takes much time and ener¬ gy to produce your yearbook. There were many times when the staff would rather have been home than working on deadlines, but felt that produc¬ ing a yearbook for fellow class¬ mates and for posterity was worth the sacrifices they made. Without the dedication and hard work provided by them there would not have been an EAGLE ' 85. I wish to thank the three of them for sticking with it to the very end. Thank you . . .
