Wm 'V-7 Hlasses Semor Hlass I-lzstary As we, the Sen1or Class of 1958 approach the long awaxted day of gr aduatmon , we look back w1th happlness upon all the thlngs accom pl1shed and w1th regret upon all of the unful f1lled opportunltles Havmg the honor of bemg the fxrst exghth grade entermg the new school made h1gh school seem even more zmportant To help us realxze th1s new 1mportance and accept 1ts re sponszbxl 1t16S we had an excellent slate of off1cers John Drmver as Pre s1dent was a1ded greatly by V1ce Presmdent, Jack Lucas Secretary, Jean Allen Treasurer, Tommy W1ll1ams, and Re porter, Carole Hard1ng One of the largest proJects was our f1rst class dance , Bonnet Hop ', and our f1rst year 1n h1gh school was cllmaxed wxth a p1cn1c Durmg our Freshman year, we were qu1te exclted for 1n that year we had an mformal Chr1strnas dance The class and off1cers, Re porter, Alv1n B r adle y Treasurer, Sammy Jones Secretary Jean Allen and V1ce Pre S1 dent, Jack Lucas, backed our Pre s1dent, Tommy W1ll1ams, the entxre year Our Freshman year was also ended Wlfh a large class p1cn1c Our Sophomore Class was led by Sammy Jones, Presldent, Jack Lucas, V1ce Presxdent Jean Allen, Secretary Ellen Powell Treasurer and Carole Hardxng, Reporter Our ma1n prog ect for the year was a dance, Be Bop Ba and as the year ended we were thr1lled for we knew that the next two years would be the most zmportant ones m our hlgh school career As we began our Jun1or Year, we were qu1t e exc1te d for we had truly become h1gh school s tude nt s Our class was led by Jack Lucas, Pr e s 1de nt Tommy W1ll1ams, V1ce Pres1dent Jean Allen, Secretary Ellen Powell Treasurer, and Katharme Davmdson, Reporter Th1s year was spent pr1mar1ly m ra.1s1ng money for the Jun1or Sen1or Banquet and Prom Whxle engaged m fund razsmg we staged a mmstrel, The J un1o r Class Mmstrel and Revue' that was a huge success The theme of our Jun1or Sen1or Prom was Southern Enchantment and every effort was put forth to make :Lt the most memorable and engoyable ever Our Class r1ngs arr1ved 1n txme for the Prom, and we were quxte proud of them The elect1on of Sammy Jones as V1ce Pres1dent of the S C A gave us our f1rst offmcer m thxs organ1zat1on At the year's end we were agreed that our work was not 1n va1n, that our Jun1or year had been a success Our Sen1or Year has been the best of all the years, the pr1mary reason bemg our w1se chomce of competent off1cers They were Torn 'ny W1ll1ams, Presldent Kathar1ne Dav1dson, V1ce Preszldent, Martha Sk1nner, Recordmg Secretary, Peggy Harr1son, Correspondmg Sec retary, Ellen Powell Treasurer, and Mollxe Lambert Reporter The se off1cers were re sponsmble for many specxal and momentous oc cas1ons whxch we shall never forget In the early fall, our class had the honor of havmg Katharme Dav1dson as Homecom1ng Queen, and Carole Hardmg as Ma1d of Honor, w1th Ellen Powell and Jean Allen as Sen1or representat1ves The elect1on of Sammy Jones as Presxdent of the S C A Jean Allen as Re cordmg Secretary Katharmne Dav1dson as Cor respondmg S e c r e t a r y and Wxlbur Hobbs as Treasurer gave the S C A the r1ght start for the New Year Durmg December our class played host to the Sen1ors of Jarratt and Brunsw1ck I-hgh Schools for College Day, where our plans for the future were dxscussed w1th the college rep re senta.t1ve s Fmally the long awa1ted tr1p to New York was taken durmg the early sprzng after so many months of work1ng, plannmg and hopxng Eve ry one marveled at the wonderful sxghts and ex per1ences about wh1ch we had heard so much When the Annual arr1ved, much pra1se and apprec1at1on was gwen to Ellen Powell Ed1tor, Stevxe Starlmg, Ass1stant Ed1tor Peggy Harr1 son, Busmess Manager, Carole Ha r d1ng As sxstant Bus1ne ss Manager, F e atu r e E dm t o r Martha Skmner, Ass1stant F e at u. r e E d 1 t o r Katrarme Dav1dson and the other edmtors Off1c1at1ng over the town for a day wxth of f1cers elected by the class was another wonder ful opportuxuty of our Semor Year As our school year, 1958 drew to a close, we were paxd a trmbute by the school w1th the annual Semor Day and for the1r engoyment we pre sented our program that afternoon The Ju.n1ors honored us w1th a Jun1or Sen1or Prom that w1ll lwe mn our memor1es always Com mencement ended a year of never to be forgot ten honors, events and successes for the Class of 1958 As can eas1ly be seen, the h1gh school years of the Class of 1958 were qu1te exc1t1ng and passed quxckly There were fa1lures as well as successes, but at graduanon we were both ready and eager to meet the challenges of the worldfor we had the one thmg so necessary for our success, a I-hgh School Diploma I n Q n 1 - Q . 1 - ' ll , ' ' 1 nl I n n n ,a -,Rr zz cl 'i - ' L- I x S X 1 5 wb-f -.. - 1 Ai' 11'- 'tr zxfg. It provides enjoyment for all. The band now has an approximate membership of sixty. The band is open to anyone expressing a desire to play an instrument and offers any- one an excellent opportunity to participate in school activities. Some of the activities of the band during the year were: paraded and marched at the football games,was in the Christmas Parade at Petersburg, gave a concert for the public, played before some student body assemblies and participated in the Apple Blossom Fes- tival in the Spring. For the first time in our high school history, some of our members made the All-State Concert Band. We salute our band for its many achievements this year.
