We were led in our Senior year by James Drewry, President; Jonnie Seeg¬ ers, Vice President; Barbara Beale, Sec¬ retary; Dickie Parker, Treasurer; and Daphine Pollard, Reporter. As Seniors we worked hard and it seemed that there was something to do every minute . College Day was a very important event for us because more than ever we realized that soon we would be out of school and would be starting out on careers of our own. In February we went to Richmond to see the General Assembly in session. Later in the spring we went to New York. This was very exciting for us and we enjoyed it very much. As Seniors we had many privileges and the one we appreciated the most was being first in the lunch line. A very big event of our Senior year was when we gave ' ‘Henrietta the Eighth.” Another happy event was Senior Day. On this day we enjoyed teaching some of the classes and putting on a program for the student body. Running the town for a day wasexcel- lent training for f u t u r e citizenship. We elected town officials from the members of the Senior Class, and they ran Emporia for a day. The Junior Class gave us a very ex¬ citing Junior-Senior Prom, Hawaiian Cruise. We returned the fa vor by enter¬ taining the Juniors at a picnic at the end of school. Bunny Johnston made a very capable President of the S.C. A.and we shall nev¬ er forget how hard Nancy Barnes and Dickie Parker worked as Editor-in-Chief and Assistant Editor of our annual. Our Junior year was very successfu l. I am sure no one will everforget our min¬ strel and the many other projects we had to raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom, April in Paris. Another excit¬ ing event that year was when we ordered our class rings. Our officers were Bunny Johnston, President; Dickie Parker, Vice President; Daphine Pollard , Secretary; James Drewry, Treasurer; and Jane Ruth Thorpe, Reporter. We chose Frances Phelps and Peggy Poole for our homecoming representa¬ tives . In the second year we elected Bart Rainey, President; Bunny Johnston, Vice President; Jane Ruth Thorpe, Secretary; Bobby Faison, Treasurer; and Jonnie Seegers , Reporter . Our homecoming representatives were Eloise Harris and Franees Phelps. SENIOR SPONSORS Miss Trixie Johnson and Miss Lucy Davi For our first year in high school we chose James Drewry for our President, Bunny Johnston for Vice President, Fran¬ ces Phelps for Secretary, Norman Seifert for Treasurer and Betsy Harding for Re¬ porter . On May 15, we had a Cotton Ball. We chose Eloise Harris and Marilyn Frye for our homecoming representatives. The four years of our high school life have gone by rapidly and although we were discouraged sometimes, we know that it was well worth the effort for at the end is a pot of gold greater than you can find anywhere; a high school diploma. Now we are ready to give our best to the world. Norman Seifert Zke junior Class Kenneth Sodergren - Treasurer Jackie Ligon -Vice President Juliette Belmonte - Secretary Barbara Slate Ed Lee - President Reporter junior Class History The Junior Class of 1956 is both looking back on the past few years and looking forward to the future. As an eighth grade we had many members but through the ensuing years the number of members dwindled until we are now 55 in number. Through the past years our class has been very co-operative, this is evidenced by the fact that our numerous projects have been successful. This year we worked very hard on the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom which was the highlight of the year. Our goal was to give the seniors one of the best’b a n q u e t s and proms ever given. We sincerely hope that our senior year will be as memorable and successful as our other high school years. Our class was the first eighth grade to enter the new high school. Highlights ' of that year were the “Bonnet Hop” held in the armory, and a picnic at the recreation center. Moving a step closer to our goal, but with the loss of members, we entered our Freshman year led by Tommy Williams . An informal Christmas dance at the armory will long be remem¬ bered, along with a delightful picnic at Slagle’s Lake. In 1 955-56 we reached the coveted title of Sophomores . Sammy Jones stepped into the leader’s place as President; Jack Lucas, Vice-President; Jean Allen, Secretary; Ellen Powell, Treasurer; Carole Harding, Reporter. Not only has our class done well in scholarship, but we also have some stand-outs in beauty. We were honored to have Miss Emporia of 1955 and the runner-up from our class . Carole Harding was the first place winner with Katherine Davidson in second place. We are looking forward to two more successful years in Greensville County High School. However, as we began this year we felt that we had a more secure place with the following leaders: Bob Wayne Mitchell, President; Randi Keedwell, Vice President; Dolly Wray, Secre¬ tary; Glenn Temple, Treasurer; and Margaret Turner, Reporter. In November, the eighth grade had a reception for the parents. For their entertainment a talent show was presented by the many talented members of the class. Afterwards , refresh¬ ments were served. A banner which was awarded to the class with the highest percentage of parents present was won by Mr. Matthews’ Class. In December, the eighth grade presented an assembly program. The most important events in any Eighth Grader’s year are the dance and the picnic in J une. The eighth grade is looking forward to a successful high school career. Jut tire Homemakers Of America The Future Homemakers of America have had a very eventful and pros¬ perous year under the leadership of Carolyn Pearson and other fine officers. Much of the club’s prosperity is due to their wonderful sponsor, Mrs. Lucille Tulloh. In the summer the officers met and drew up a program of work which has resulted in a year of well planned activities. These Activities were: a trip to the State Fair, a formal initiation service, serving as hostess to the Virginia Da re Federation planning meeting, attendance by officers of the Fed¬ eration business meeting, election of Barbara Slate President of the Federa¬ tion. Our school realized the first week of November was National F. H. A. Week by the attractively decorated bulletin boards and the many other things that were done in observance of this week. BettyAnn Wright was appointed to the State Camp Committee; Windell Yeattes and Carolyn Pearson represented F. H. A. at the State Convention held at Madison College, Harrisonburg, Vir¬ ginia; a faculty vs. F. H. A. basketball game was sponsored as a fund raising project. Spring was highlighted by a beautiful and impressive Mother- Daughter, Father-Son Banquet held jointly with the F. F. A. and a fashion show with the crowning of Miss Fashion Queen, 1956. Sixteen members spent a delightful week at Morgarts Beach. The members attended Federation Spring Rally, and to end our year the club mothers, Mrs. H.T. Hill, Mrs. C.U. Parrish, Mrs. W. A. Sopko, gave a very enjoyable picnic. The 1955 BaseballTeam enjoyed a most successful season. The Eagles compiled a district record of six wins and two losses while winning the Group II, District III Baseball Champion¬ ship. This was the last baseball for Bobby Clary, “Red” Harris , Bobby Hudson, Wesley New- some, and Alfred Faison. Certainly recognition should be given to Mike Doyle for his outstand¬ ing work as a pitcher; to Alfred Faison and Bobby Clary for their abilities both in batting and in the outfield; and to the two fine catchers, “Red” and Billy Harris. The season of 1955 was truly a banner year for Coach Miller and his Emporia Baseball Team .
