LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA GIFT OF DIVISION OF EXTENSION PROPERTY 0 F THE LIBRARY OF V - _ RICHMOND, VA THE RIPARIAN 1953 GREENSVILLE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Emporia, Virginia FOREWORD Lest we forget these memorable days. Day s in which we fir st began to understand the mean¬ ing of friendship and cooperation; days in which we gained for our selves the satisfaction of achiev¬ ed knowledge; days in which our loses were few, our gains many. We are nearing the turning point of our lives. Beyond this point lies the future and the realities of life which each of us, separately, must face. Not only will this year mark a change in our way of life, but it will also change the course of Greenville County High School. No longer will this building be known to high school students as their source of high school knowledge. As the class of ' 53 is the last senior class to graduate from the old high school building, our purpose in publishing this book is to preserve in our memory, the aims and ideals of our Senior Class-Lest We Forget! • • • « • • • • It is with a deep sense of appreciation and grati¬ tude that we, the Senior Class of 1953, dedicate the Riparian to our principal, Mr. Andrew G. Wright. Mr. Wright has given us his continuous assistance and guidance in securing our high school education. He has proven himself to be not only an outstanding leader but a worthy friend as well. His excellent guidance, assistance, loyalty, and friendship will remain in our memories during the coming years. « SCENES AROUND SCHOOL Familar and unforgettable scenes are plenti¬ ful around G.C.H.S. It was here that our dreams were born of the day that we, the class of ' 53, would be seniors. We felt big, indeed, when we were asked to join the clubs in high school, and feeling a little lost with the older students, we sat b ick meekly and learned the real value of these clubs. Electing officers for the :lass was new to us, too, for this was the first time that our whole class had asserr led. We felt proud as we elected Darden Livesay, president; Bobby Lucas, vice -president; Mary Lou Harris, secretary; and Baker Harding, treasurer. Arthur Garrett Brigman, Jr. Peggy Shannon Bryant Clifton Shell Collins James Gordon Crumpler Albert Luke Davis, Jr. Nellie Rosa Delbridge n—; ! f-. . - n — iu i i - a i i g:_z_■ m i H % — i We worked hard thatyear, but our workwas not in vain. We had a formal dance in March, and it was really a success. We thought we were beautiful in our evening dresses, and to all the girls the boys looked very grown-up in suits and ties. Then came the year when we were real freshmen. We knew our way around school, and we began to realize that it was an honor to be the first class to go to G. C.H.S. for five years. We were led in our freshman year by Mamie Alice Shutt, Elsie Meade Webb, Frances Ann Williams, and Ervin Harris. March rolled around soon, and we had a rainbow dance. The gym really looked pretty decorated with a rainbow against a blue sky with a pot of gold at each end. How well we remember this, and how long ago it seems, almost as if it were a dream! Joseph Herbert Doyle Mary Frances Derring Robert Hamilton Duncan, Jr. Emil Stanley Fajna Mildred Ruth Fajna Gene Raymond Ferguson - $ t) « 1 ° 7 The dream changed, but it was still good to us, for we had become proud sopho¬ mores. Our leaders for this year were: Robert Grizzard, Mary Lou Harris, Shirley Allen, and Joe Doyle. Of course we knew everything; or ; at least we thought we did. Giving the Sophomore-Junior-Senior banquet and dance was our biggest thrill. The work didn ' t seem like work at all; it was a goal to which we had long looked forward. Club JS2 was the setting of the banquet and dance, and Jimmy McArdle was pro¬ prietor. A delicious meal was served, after which the Virginians played for the dance. We were proud sophomores, indeed, to think that we had presented the seniors with such an outstanding evening. They returned their thanks by giving us a picnic at the end of the school year. Hattie Laureen Ferguson William Donald Finch Dorothy Leola Frye Carolyn Ann Gray Robert Hope Grizzard, Jr. Charles Baker Harding, Jr. September of 1951 brought us back to G.C.H.S. as juniors, the leaders of the school. There was no senior class ahead of us; we were to have two years of leader¬ ship. Darden Livesay was elected president of our class with vice-president,Bobby Lucas; seeretary, Robert Duncan; and treasurer, Martha Newsome. Our dreams were realized in the sports world, too, this year. The football team was booming with Co-captains Johnny Brantley and Jimmy Jean. In the boys basketball Darden Livesay was captain, and they traveled to the tournament, not winning by the scores, but winning in their hearts. The girls chose Elsie Meade Webb and Mary Lou Harris to lead their team, and, though the season was not very successful, it provided good experience for the coming year. As usual Emporia had a winning baseball team with Co-captains Danny Belmonte and Carlton Butler. Danny was also chosen as a member of the 1952 District All-Star Team. Barbara Bland Harding Herman Marshall Harris Mary Lou Harris Lewis Edward Harrup Robert Raiford Hart Jessie Lee Hobbs 1 D ft t j | cd n V But sports were not all to be proud of as juniors. Our class visited Richmond during the General Assembly and saw it in action, and visited the museums there. The trip was very educational as well as enjoyable to us. This was the year, too, that our Senior Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y Clubs won plaques for being the best clubs in the district. Lucy Morrow also helped our club by rating second best reporter of the Hi-Y - Tri-Hi-Y Model General Assembly. John Starke was elected Youth Governor for the Assembly to be held in 1953. At the beauty pageant held to choose Miss Emporia Hi the judges picked Barbara Harding. Barbara also served as Homecoming Queen. There were other beauty races in our class, too, as Nell Tomlinson was elected May Queen with her maid- of-honor, Mary Frances Derring, and for the scream of the year, A1 Davis was chosen the most beautiful in the Womanless Beauty Pageant. Priscilla Harding Jessee Sidney Millard Jones Suzanne Cochrane Klotz Loretta Lamb Darden Rawls Livesay Robert Edward Lucas Once again our class held its annual Ball in the armory. It was a Moonlight Prom with a blue sky complete with stars and a large illuminated moon. The Junior year ended with a picnic at Slagles Lake with much revelry. Then it happened! Our class, with only 53 members now, had become seniors. With the very capable officers, Johnny Brantley, President; Ann Warren, Vice-President; Virginia Matthews, Secretary; and Martha Newsome, Treasurer, we started the big year off with a bang. Frances Ann Williams was elected editor of the annual with Joyce Braswell, assistant editor, and Baker Harding, Business Manager. F ranees Ann was also chosen by the class and faculty as the best citizen of the class. The Riparian was one of our main interests, and to raise money we presented Calendar Capers, a musical, sold Christmas cards, and gave a most successful senior play, For Pete ' s Sake! Emily Ruth Matthews Virginia Lee Matthews James Charles McArdle Nancy Jean Moore Lucy Meade Morrow Martha Duke Newsome This seemed to be a good year for G.C.H.S. in sports, too, for the football team, again with Johnny Brantley as a co-captain, lost only two games. Danny Belmonte, Garrett Brigman, Joe Doyle, Gene Ferguson, Darden Livesay, W. M. Robinson, and Robert Grizzard were among the seniors who showed expertness on the gridiron. In basketball the boys fought with the true spirit of G.C.H.S. with the seniors Darden Livesay, co-captain, Johnny Brantley, and Danny Belmonte. Mary Lou Harris and Elsie Meade Webb again led the girls, and it was this year that they were undefeated in the District. Both the boys and the girls went to the basketball tournaments to bring honors back to their Alma Mater. Frances Ann Williams and Virginia Matthews were among the Seniors who helped gain these honors. During the sports season Elsie Meade Webb was elected Homecoming Queen with maid-of-honor, Mary Frances Derring, and her senior attendants, Sue Klotz and Nancy Moore. Billy Jearl Norwood Charlene Templa Owen Ellen Geneva Powell Willard Montellous Robinson, Jr. Nellie Irene Rodgester John Winton Starke Without mentioning the high scholastic standing s of students such as Lucy Morrow, Peggy Bryant, Elsie Meade Webb, Clifton Collins, Virginia Matthews, Laureen Fer¬ guson, and Frances Ann Williams this would not seem like the class of ' 53. We are just as proud of them as our country is of George Washington and the many men who helped make America what it is today. On January 18, 1953, we went as a class to Washington, D. C. for the inaugura¬ tion of the President. In our three days there, we saw all the historical monuments, toured the capitol and many other places of interest, and most important of all, we saw President Eisenhower in person. Frances Ann Warren Elsie Meade Webb Mary Elizabeth Wendell But most vivid in our minds remains the lovely Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance given us by the Juniors. It was the last dance for our class, and the orchestra play¬ ed more beautifully than ever on that special May evening. We were beginning to realize how much we really thought of our school, and how we hate to leave it. Now, we have reached the first rung of our ladder as we reach graduation. It is not the end of our class, but just the beginning, and as we go our separate ways in the long life ahead of us, may our class be as successful as it has been in our years at G. C. H. S. Billy was a faithful member of the Calvary Baptist Church and Sun¬ day School. At school he was a member of the freshman class and the Industrial Arts Club. Last year he played right halfback on the Midget Football team where he earned his Letter . He played right end on the Varsity Football Team this session. Although football was his favorite sport he played some basketball and baseball. He thoroughly enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. His loyal service and gracious manners gained him many friends by whom he was admired and respected. Our loss in his passing is felt very keenly. The largest project to be completed by this organization was the publishing of a handbook which was given to all high school students. Another big project was buying a flag for the new high school. The Greensville County S.C.A. had charge of planning the district S.C.A. meeting at Stony Creek. John Starke presided and the girl ' s trio furnished a musical selection. Also a group of S.C.A. members attended a forum sponsored by Miller and Rhoads at John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia. This forum was con¬ ducted by Virginia S.C.A. members and thirty foreign students. Other projects have been to have a cake auction and the selling of hot dogs and candy at ball games. The members of the S.C.A. are from each home room and each spring the officers are elected by the whole high school. The officers for 1952-53 are; President, John Starke; Vice-President, George Braswell; Recording Secretary, Frances Ann Williams; Corresponding Secretary, Barbara Harding; and Treasurer, W. M. The Senior Girl ' s Tri-Hi-Y is a Christian organization in the school for junior and senior girls. Its purpose is to create, maintain and extend throughout the home, school, andcommunity high standards of Christian charac¬ ter. Each year the club entertains visiting basketball and football teams. This year the Hi-Ys were in charge of the Homecoming Dance. The float which was entered in the parade was very pretty and won second prize. The club also fixed a basket at Christmas for a needy family. With the help of the other Hi-Ys, the club conducted Pre-Easter services in the school and a community sunrise service on Easter Sunday. This was followed by a breakfast at the Legion Hut. Most outstanding was the organization of an alumni club. This was a new thing for the entire state as well as this school. Also, delegates were sent to the district convention, the Model General Assembly and to Blue Ridge. Lucy Morrow won a reporter ' s award for articles written at Model General Assembly. Book Marks for daily Bible readings were distributed to all school students. Senior Keys’ Hi-V President, W. M.
