lughted by a short but beautuful reluguous play coached by Muss Shaner and by a bruef but entertaunung secular playlet under the durectuon of Muss Closer was planned to unclude composutuons from Bach Mendelssohn Palestruna as well as such contemporary composers as Chrustuansen Bornscheun Lusaas and others hach grade has specual solousts truos and choruses The hugh school muxed chorus of fifty fuse wouces sung for all festuvals theur numbers bemg selected from the works of the well known masters The hugh school us also represented by a gurls ensemble boys chorus two treble clef truos and a male quartet In addutuon to sungung at school pro grams the smaller groups sung for reluguous and cuvuc meetungs and were well repre sented on the Chrustmas raduo program sung by the communuty s unuor Mozart Club over statuon WKRZ on December I8 Because ut had a smaller stage at uts dusposal than was usual the Dustruct Chorus held at Greenvulle February 77 28 and 29 had to restruct enrollment to two from each school Carl Shakley and Roger Meabon from the Hugh School Male uartet were the fortunate selectees to represent Salem Selectuon of musuc and practuce for the Sprung Festuval Baccalaureate Servuce and Graduatuon Exercuses began early un the new year Mrs Grace Potts fifth and suxth grade teacher us the accompanust and Mrs Grace Adams the musuc durector for these programs Thus beung the first ussue of the Annual the staff wrute up commuttee thought ut would be of unterest to former graduates to hare a short resume of some of the out standung actusutues of the smaller musucal groups as well as the hugh school muxed chorus and grade chours sunce the tume Mrs Grace Adams has been wuth us as musuc durector In 46 ames Irwun who us at present attendung Claruon State Teachers College was our barutone soloust and hus well receus ed performances on school church and cuvuc programs were always welcome Our gurls truo thus same yelr had Margaret md Ze-lla Rutts and Marulyn Blaur as members The gurls worked hard practucung and were popular demand for PTA and other school functuons Creduted to thus group were the amusung parodues and sketches whuch enruched the programs at our basketball ban quet and xaruous school socuals Helen Whutlung Lous Rhoacles and Margaret Rutts have been leadung sopranos Bertha Brustle ean Rutts and Verla Rossman do outstandung work as altos whule Nor man and Grant Rhoades were unduspensable un the bass sectuon Our male quartet consusts of Duck Detar Carl Shakley Bob Mattern and Roger Meabon Each boy can and wull often do line solo work These boys were selected to attend our Dustruct Chorus Musuc Pestusals at Sluppery Rock College un -48 and Green vulle Hugh School un 49 Carl Shakley had the dustruct representatuon for Salem at State Chorus un Sharon un 19-18 Helen Whutlung was our popular May Queen un 47 whule Donna Mae Beels reugned un 48 In addutuon to the splendud Chrustmas and May Musuc lestuxals we presented the fast movung tuneful operetta Top O The World un 1947 Barney Neely Walter Rutts ames Irwun Betty McElhattan and Maruon Wenner are just a few of the names that return to us as we recall how hard we worked and the fun we had then Who wull eser forget the hularuous scenes when Lous Shakley dashed madly up and down the ausles frantucally pursued by that fantastuc horse The beautufully costumed operetta Sprung s Awalcenung whuch we gaxe for our May Musuc lestux al had as has been our custom full enrollment of both grade and hugh school partucupants Only the fullest eooperatuon on the part of teachers parents School Board and Parent Tea hers Assocuatuon haue made possuble the ambutuous musuc programs mhuch haue enruched our school s extra currucular progrum clurung the past three years - u , , . . 7 . , , , .. , . , . . . .
