Y ' 7 . . ,. . . ,, . y . , . . . . . . 3 A T lughted room I was met by a man of orxental appearance who after learmng my mten txon offered me a speclal group rate for the reading After gnrng htm the requrred sllver I was seated before a small table on whrch rested a crystal ball At once I gazed intently into xt Gradually a scene came mto new and much to my surprnse I saw a plcture of Grace paradmg before a group of women at what I thought must be a fashion show She obviously had become one of john Robert Powers famous models Soon thus scene samshed and another replaced rt Thus tlme another member of the Class of 49 Hezzle came mto x new Although he wanted to be a banker the crystal ball showed hum plainly as a travelrng Puller Brush Man As I followed hrs movements I saw hum rmgmg the doorbell of a yery rmportant home and more surprnsmg stlll who should appear at the door but Peg My Intellectual classmate had made much progress through the years as a nurse mand for ohn D Rockefeller although she had planned to be an arrlnne hostess The next scene was a fantastrc one whxch plctured our former short and chubby Betty as an actlve trapeze performer for the Barnum and Barley Crrcus Although most of her frxends thought she would make an excellent housewrfe she fooled them by maknng a successful career nn the crrcus As a result of the strenuous exercxse whrch ac compamed this excltmg and dangerous work Betty had grown at least a foot and looked much thinner I was very much dlsappolnted when I found ln the next scene Roger servmg as a dog catcher Roger had always dreamed of bemg a protessnonal baseball player and I learned that he was very successful ln thus professlon for a few years But love caught up wlth hrm Hrs wrfe bemg the nervous type chose the safer career of a dog catcher for her handsome husband Slowly the brlght sphere again became cloudy and darlc and I wondered rf thus was all I would be permntted to see All at once the ball began to glow agarn and I was startled to see tall and husky Bob drnvmg a Cahfornna frult truck A sign on the truck read The Wrllxam Beels Frunt Farm B1ll s hopes of bemg a policeman had been fulfilled when he served for three years on the Death Valley Pol1ce Patrol However Brll was forced to retxre due to his wnfes orders I was amazed at the fact that he had marrled his chrldhood sweetheart Donna Donna s career as a school teacher was ac compllshed but when the mlmster tred the lcnot between her and Bull she became a dnetncnan for the Beels famxly of elght As thls scene rapidly sanlshed beautiful stars emenated from the ball and I gazed fearfully mto the future wondermg what thus mlght foretell These stars changed mto lrghts whrch enclrcled the Duquesne Gardens rn Pnttsburgh Gllclmg gracefully across the lce was Helen Sheesley who was stealrng the show wnth her outstandlng feat IH the Ice Capades The lxghts began to fade but suddenly grew brrghter revealmg a man wrth a mn crophone Lo xt was erry the polxtxcxan of the class I knew erry had gone mto polntxcs but I dxd not know that he had forsaken lt for radio Here he was a radxo announcer for N BC This evenlng he was tellmg about the debut of a nlght club star IH Parts The scene changed as he talked and I saw an old frnend of mme Lons Rhoads who had been a nurse for several years Lons looked sery beautrful and pros ed to be an accom plnshed snnger Between acts there was a floor show to entertaln the guests A stnklng young blonde among the ballet dancers attracted by a tentxon She was without a doubt the best dancer on the floor I nearly fell from my chanr when the face became plalner and I saw that nt was Helen Yes Helen Whxtlnng had been a telephone operator for several years but she loved excitement and crowds too well to endurc that work long so shc chose ballet dancing for her career Instantly eyerythmg grew dark rn the crystal ball and after watchnng for some tame nothmg more appeared The wenrd man told me that the crystal ball was exhausted of tales for the day I left the mystrcal shop satnshed that the Class of 1949 had certamly gone places and done things smce that Commencement Day m une 1 Y V - I A . .
